MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WETM) — Schuyler Emergency Medical Services (SEMS), a trusted provider of emergency response in the region, has officially rebranded as Centralus Health EMS.
This update, announced from Centralus Health in a release on Thursday, May 1, reflects the integration of Arnot Health and Cayuga Health under the newly established Centralus Health system, continuing to prioritize outstanding emergency care.
Roll up your sleeve for a good cause in Schuyler County
According to the release, the EMS service, originally launched in 2023 through a contract between Cayuga Health and Schuyler County, delivers around-the-clock pre-hospital care and emergency transport throughout Schuyler County's rural and residential communities. That commitment remains unchanged with the new name and visual rebranding.
The rebrand includes updated ambulance graphics showcasing the Centralus Health EMS name and logo. Operationally, however, the service remains fully consistent with what the community is used to.

'While our ambulances will now carry the Centralus Health name and a new look, nothing else is changing,' said Scott Lyerla, MSN, RN, Senior Director, Clinical Operations & Emergency Services for Centralus Health. 'Our dedicated EMS team will continue to provide the same high-quality, timely care that our community relies on,' he said.
The name change aligns with Centralus Health's broader mission to unify services and expand across the system. By combining the resources of Arnot Health and Cayuga Health, Centralus Health said it's creating a more integrated patient-centered care model while remaining deeply committed to each community it serves.

Canadian wildfire smoke impacts Southern Tier air quality

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)— The Southern Tier was under an air quality advisory for 'fine particulate matter' because of the smoke from the wildfires burning in Canada on Saturday, June 7. Doctors are recommending that people stay aware of the effects of unhealthy air conditions in the area. 'Smoke has started to move in because of the Canadian wildfires, and what we have been seeing these days with lots of sunshine and dry conditions, which makes it a lot easier for that smoke to move into our region,' said Alivia Colón, 18 Storm team meteorologist One injured after house fire breaks out in Village of Savona on Sunday There are several ways to determine if air quality is affecting an individual. The impact can occur over time. 'You may hear increased wheezing, moving around becomes a lot more challenging, such as climbing stairs or hills, you may also have other signs of irritation, such as cough, throat irritation, and other allergy-type symptoms,' said Bradley DeWitt, Centralus Health Physician Assistant. Air quality affects everyone, even if it doesn't seem to do so. According to the Department of Ecology, State of Washington, exposure to smoke in the air can make existing heart and lung conditions worse. NYSDEC issues air quality advisory for Southern Tier, Finger Lakes on Saturday & Sunday 'Smoke is smoke, it's not great for anybody's lungs, so I think when the air quality alert is issued, I think in general you should limit your time spent outside,' said Colón. It is especially important for older individuals and people with pre-existing health conditions are more susceptible to stay up to date on air quality. Arnot Health and Cayuga Health merge

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Arnot Health and Cayuga Health will now operate under one company. The two healthcare institutions announced on Jan. 7 that they will operate under the name Centralus Health. Arnot and Cayuga's medical campuses and offices will keep their names. Arnot and Cayuga initially announced their plans to merge in April 2023, and Centralus says the companies came together to share resources, become more efficient, and reduce operational costs. Additionally, the company says it will be able to expand access to care for Arnot and Cayuga patients and offer them a wider array of services. 'This partnership represents a shared commitment to expanding access to high-quality care for the communities we serve,' said Dr. Martin Stallone, CEO of Cayuga Health and CEO of Centralus Health. 'Together, we are strengthening our ability to offer a wider array of services, reach underserved populations, and invest in the future of healthcare delivery – locally.' Arnot NICU gets $20,000 donation Stallone says Centralus currently has plans to expand primary care in Chemung and Tompkins counties and will change both Cayuga and Arnot's online health portals. Starting in March, patients will use MyChart, which is powered by the electronic health record system EPIC, to check their records, schedule appointments, and communicate with their providers. This system will be integrated across Arnot and Cayuga locations. Centralus didn't specify any other changes patients can expect to see, but Jonathan Lawrence, CEO of Arnot and executive vice president of Centralus, says some of the company's changes to expand care might impact some patients. Through the merging of Arnot Health and Cayuga Health, Centralus Health has more than 6,500 employees, provides $1 billion in care every year, and has 847,000 outpatient appointments annually. Centralus serves patients in the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Central New York regions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
