Everything seems to indicate that the personal matters that led Scottie Scheffler's caddie, Ted Scott, to suddenly leave for home last weekend have taken longer than initially thought.Scott will not be back for the BMW Championship, and Scheffler will have a new bagman carrying his bag.
The news was posted on the official PGA Tour website. Not only was Scott's absence announced, but the World No. 1 will have Mike Cromie, a seasoned caddie who regularly works with Chris Kirk.
Cromie was released after the FedEx St. Jude Championship because Kirk just missed qualifying for the BMW Championship. He ended ranked 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, ending his regular season after finishing tied for ninth in Memphis.
Kirk and Cromie have been working together since 2020, during which time the player has won two tournaments, the 2023 Honda Classic and The Sentry in 2024. Cromie is also a good player, and even played college golf for the University of Georgia.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States swaps clubs with his caddie Ted Scott on the eighth hole during the first round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club on May 15, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina MoreScott was with Scheffler in Memphis for the first three rounds, but had to travel home suddenly due to a personal matter. The world No. 1 had to call on his friend Brad Payne, who is also the PGA Tour chaplain, to help him during the final round.
There is no information yet on how long Scott will be away. Nor is there any information on whether Cromie will remain his backup should he also need to miss the TOUR Championship.
Scott is one of the most respected caddies on the PGA Tour. He has been at Scheffler's side for each of his 17 victories on tour, including four major championships, and he previously helped Bubba Watson win two green jackets.
Scheffler has a commanding lead in the FedEx Cup standings and is the overwhelming favorite to win the BMW Championship. The Ridgewood, New Jersey, native has finished in the top 10 in 14 of his 17 tournaments this season, including four wins.
Twelve of those top 10 finishes have come consecutively, a streak he'll look to maintain this week in Maryland.

Scottie Scheffler Gives A+ Review of Keegan Bradley's Captaincy

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The PGA Tour is in Maryland to play the BMW Championship, but all fans already have one eye on the Ryder Cup, as it is only four weeks away. The work of both team captains has never been more under public scrutiny, a reality that becomes more palpable every day. Even world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has already had the opportunity to give his assessment of Keegan Bradley's work leading the American team. This happened during the press conference prior to the BMW Championship, and Scheffler described Bradley as passing the captaincy test in flying colors. "The intensity that he's brought as a captain -- I mean, he has definitely exceeded my expectations as far as a captain," Scheffler told the reporters. "He's done a great job. He's passionate about the Ryder Cup. He cares a lot about us as players. It's been a lot of fun kind of watching him develop in this role, and we're excited to get the Ryder Cup started." Keegan Bradley and Scottie Scheffler of the U.S. Team speak to the media following Thursday's Four-ball matches on day one of the 2024 Presidents Cup at The Royal Montreal Golf Club on September 26, 2024 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. MoreOne of the most talked-about storylines right now is whether Bradley will take on the role of player-captain. Scheffler initially avoided weighing in, but ultimately left no doubt about which option he supports. "I guess you're going to have to ask the captain that question," he said. "I think, looking at our squad, I think we have a really good group of guys. I think Keegan can only help that. I think if it's something that Keegan wants to be part of the team and wants to play, I think he's a guy we'd all love to have on the team." The BMW Championship will mark the end of the eligibility period for the American Team. After the names of the six direct qualifiers are announced, Bradley will decide and announce the six free picks, a process that could take several additional days or weeks. Each team already has three players secured: Scheffler himself, J.J. Spaun, and Xander Schauffele for the Americans, and Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Tommy Fleetwood for the Europeans. What to know as LIV Golf makes its Central Indiana debut

LIV Golf is bringing its championship tournament to Westfield this weekend. Why it matters: This is the first time the well-funded and fast-growing golf tour will set up shop in Central Indiana, and tens of thousands of spectators are expected to attend. LIV has attracted controversy since it launched in 2022, partly because it is funded by the Saudi government. Catch up quick: Critics argue that Saudi Arabia is funding the golf tour to "sportswash" its global image, Axios' Tasha Tsiaperas reports. The PGA Tour initially criticized the tour over human rights concerns in Saudi Arabia and suspended players who took part in the inaugural LIV tournament. The two groups shocked the golf world and announced plans to merge in 2023. But those plans have since stalled and seem no closer to reaching resolution. Driving the news: LIV Golf Indianapolis tees off Friday through Sunday at The Club at Chatham Hills to close out its regular season. Top players like Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson are part of the action. The three-day event will also feature an immersive fan village with activities for all ages, and a two-night concert headlined by Riley Green on Friday and Jason Derulo on Saturday. How it works: LIV tournaments are shorter than PGA events, taking three days instead of four. LIV tournaments have fewer golfers (54) who play all weekend regardless of performance, while a typical PGA tournament has more than 100 players who are cut based on score. Everyone starts playing at once, instead of having staggered tee times as in the PGA. State of play: The LIV hype is hitting Indy as golfing in the U.S. skews younger. Millennials expect to spend about $4,557 this year on golf gear and expenses like course fees, club memberships, travel and lessons, according to a new survey from Censuswide and Whatnot. That's $693 more than Gen X and $1,798 more than Boomers. Data from the National Golf Foundation finds that more than half (57%) of on-course golfers are now under the age of 50, and the number of junior golfers (ages 6–17) has risen 48% since 2019. If you go: The tournament tees off at 12:05pm Friday, 11:05am Saturday and 10:05am Sunday.
