Poll finds Americans primarily use the internet to browse, pay bills, and shop

A recent poll by telecommunications firm Optimum revealed that Americans spend over 10 hours daily online, accounting for approximately half their day. The survey of 2,000 adults indicated that around five hours are dedicated to watching videos, with 5.4 hours spent on other online activities. Primary online activities include browsing (79%), paying bills (77%), online shopping (72%), and doom scrolling on social media (73%), with significantly less time allocated to work or school. Over half (55%) of respondents prefer streaming videos on a television, while more than 40% favor using their phone for general online tasks. The findings highlight the crucial importance of robust, affordable, and dependable internet in modern life, despite some prior research suggesting even higher online usage.

Sarepta will resume gene therapy shipments after FDA review of recent patient death

Shares of beleaguered drugmaker Sarepta Therapeutics jumped in afterhours trading Monday after the company said it would resume shipping its gene therapy for some patients, following a brief pause requested by regulators. The Food and Drug Administration said it recommended lifting the hold for young patients with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy who are still able to walk. Regulators had requested the pause after the deaths of two older teenagers who were taking the therapy. The FDA also said in a statement it determined that a recently reported death of an 8-year-old boy was unrelated to the therapy. Company shares surged more than 16% after the announcement to $13.86 in afterhours trading. The jump is the latest in a series of drastic stock movements triggered by changing fortunes for the company's best-selling product. Elevidys is the first gene therapy approved in the U.S. for Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, the fatal muscle-wasting disease that affects boys and young men, resulting in early death. It received accelerated approval in 2023 for a narrow range of young patients and was expanded last year for use in older patients, including those who can no longer walk. The FDA decision Monday 'significantly improves Elevidys' sales outlook in the near-term,' Jefferies analyst Andrew Tsai told investors, in a note after the announcement. 'The street will feel relieved about the situation, suggesting meaningful stock upside potential.' Sarepta's therapy has been under scrutiny from regulators after two teenage boys died earlier this year from acute liver injury, a known side effect of the treatment. The FDA then requested a pause in shipments of the drug after the death of a third patient taking a different Sarepta therapy. FDA officials have suggested the company will need to provide new study data on safety to resume Elevidys' use in older patients. 'The FDA will continue to work with the sponsor regarding non-ambulatory patients, which remains subject to a voluntary hold, following two deaths,' FDA said in its statement. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Waymo to launch autonomous ride-hailing in Dallas next year

July 28 (Reuters) - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Waymo said on Monday it will roll out its autonomous ride-hailing service in Dallas in 2026, accelerating its U.S. expansion as electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab pushes to grow its recently launched robotaxi business. After years of cautious growth, Waymo has recently increased its pace, launching in new cities through partnerships with ride-hailing platforms and fleet operators. In Dallas, Waymo will operate through a new multi-year partnership with car rental company Avis Budget Group (CAR.O), opens new tab, which will manage fleet operations, including maintenance and depot infrastructure, Waymo said in a blog. Waymo currently serves more than 250,000 paid trips every week with about 1,500 vehicles in cities such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. This year, Waymo began its service in Austin exclusively on the Uber platform, months before Tesla started a limited robotaxi trial in the city with about a dozen Model Y SUVs and a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company will rapidly expand its robotaxi services to other U.S. cities and is seeking regulatory approval from California, Nevada, Florida, and Arizona. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been challenging, with several companies such as GM's Cruise shutting down after collisions, recalls, and federal investigations. Amazon-backed (AMZN.O), opens new tab Zoox is among the few still operating, preparing to launch commercial services later this year. Until Tesla's (TSLA.O), opens new tab Austin trial, Waymo was the only company to operate paid driverless taxis in the United States. Rides will be available through the Waymo app. The company is also planning launches in Miami and Washington, D.C., in 2026 as part of its broader national rollout. The collaboration is part of Avis' broader strategy to evolve from a traditional rental car company into a mobility services provider.
