Visible from space: Vesuvius fire has three fronts still active
According to information from the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, at the end of a meeting of the Rescue Coordination Centre, there are still three active fronts: the Valle del Gigante towards Monte Somma, where the Canadair firefighting aircraft are operating, the southern slope of the crater, where regional Civil Protection helicopters are battling the flames. And the Vicinale area, where last night's wind rekindled the flames, which were tackled by ground teams.
The public prosecutor's office in Nola (Naples), which is responsible for the area, has opened a file to clarify the origin of the fire that is bringing one of the country's landscape and cultural symbols to its knees. According to what has been learnt so far, there no suspects and no crime hypotheses have been identified so far, pending the report that will be presented by the Carabinieri foresters.
Since the early hours of Sunday, 6 Canadairs and 4 helicopters have been involved, in addition to 15 teams of Civil Protection volunteers mobilised by an extraordinary decree of the Minister of Civil Protection and Sea Policies, at the request of the Campania Region. The Fire Brigade has reinforced its presence with two forest fire-fighting modules from Tuscany and Marche and reinforcement teams from Benevento and Salerno.
On the health and logistical front, the mayors of the four worst hit municipalities have activated the Municipal Operations Centres and a fixed 24-hour medical station in Terzigno. The Asl Napoli 1 Centro has made the residence of the Ospedale del Mare available to host volunteers from other regions.
On the environmental and economic front, Italian farmers' group Coldiretti is reporting extensive damage to the Lacryma Christi DOP vine cultivation right on the eve of the grape harvest, as well as to the Pellecchiella apricot and Pomodorino del Piennolo DOP tomato cultivations. Also at risk are agritourism sites and tasting routes, with a very hard impact on local tourism and agriculture.
Legambiente report: 56,263 hectares already up in smoke in Italy
The seriousness of the situation is part of an alarming national context: according to Legambiente's report Italia in fumo (Italy in smoke), between 1 January and 31 July 2025 there were 851 fires for a total of 56,263 hectares burnt, already exceeding the surface area affected in all of 2024. In particular, over 18,700 hectares of Natura 2000 areas were destroyed in 253 fire episodes, confirming a trend defined as "chronic" by the association, which has launched an appeal to safeguard Italy's natural heritage.

Thai prosecutors indict dozens linked to deadly building collapse
State prosecutors in Thailand have formally indicted 23 individuals and companies on charges related to the collapse of a Bangkok office building that was destroyed after an earthquake, killing at least 92 people. The partially built high-rise, which was to house the new State Audit Office, was the only one in Thailand to completely collapse on 28 March due to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicentre in neighbouring Myanmar. Those indicted include the lead contractors for the project: Italian-Thai Development Co. and its Chinese joint venture partner for the project, the China Railway No. 10 company. Italian-Thai Development's president, Premchai Karnasuta, and China Railway No. 10's local director, Zhang Chuanling, were also indicted along with others, including designers, engineers and several other companies. The charges in the indictments include professional negligence in design, supervision, or construction practices that failed to comply with engineering standards, resulting in danger to others and causing deaths, according to a statement from the Office of the Attorney General. Additional charges include forgery and use of forged documents. The indictment of Premchai is his second major tangle with the law. In 2019, he was convicted of killing protected animals and illegal possession of weapons while hunting in a wildlife sanctuary for which he served three years in prison. Several of those indicted on Thursday had already surrendered to police and denied any wrongdoing. An investigation by police and other officials found design and structural flaws were behind the building's collapse and that some of the officially approved designs were not implemented. The earthquake killed more than 3,700 people in Myanmar and caused major damage in Mandalay, the country's second-biggest city, and in the capital Naypyidaw.

Who are the people driving up gambling statistics in Europe?
The number of customers in the European Union and the United Kingdom on online gambling platforms reached 38.6 million last year, representing a 19% increase from the 32.5 million recorded in 2023, according to the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA). While this is an upward trend over the past five years, the number of people looking for help to stop gambling addiction across Europe has also increased. Data from The Lancet from 2024 claims that 54.7 million men worldwide experienced gambling disorders or problematic gambling, compared to 25.3 million women. Gambling can lead to serious harms to health, including financial stress, relationship breakdown, family violence, mental illness and suicide, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). EGBA's members represent approximately 30% of Europe's 2024 online gambling gross gaming revenue. Its members include Bet365 and Entain, which owns Ladbrokes and Paddy Power. In 2024, three-quarters of customers were male, marking an increase from 72% in 2023. Among women, this figure dropped from 28% in 2023 to 25% in 2024. People aged between 26 and 35 years and between 36 and 50 years make up the biggest share of gamblers, each representing 29% of customers. In Europe, online casinos currently remain the largest contributor at €21.5 billion, followed by sports and events betting at €13.7 billion. Both are projected to grow by around 7% annually until 2029. As a result, EU and national lawmakers are tightening rules and aim to combat the trivialisation of gambling. For instance, Germany prohibits online gambling altogether, while other member states allow it but only under restricted circumstances. Gambling among young students Although underage gambling is illegal in European countries, a 2024 study conducted by the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) reveals that, on average, 23% of students aged 15 to 16 across 37 European countries reported having gambled for money in the past 12 months. This gambling occurred either in person or online and involved games of chance, such as slot machines, card games, dice games, lotteries, or betting on sports and animal races. Italy has the highest prevalence of gambling among students, at 45%, followed by Greece, at 36%. In contrast, the lowest rate is observed in Georgia, at 9.5%. A 2025 study conducted by Italian researchers using ESPAD data found that Southern European and Balkan countries are in the high-prevalence group, while Eastern European countries fall into the medium-prevalence group. Scandinavian and Central European countries predominantly belong to the low-prevalence group. Experts have also noted that while women are less likely to start gambling, they tend to progress to problem gambling more quickly. Online gambling has also seen a considerable growth, with participation rates growing by more than half among boys, from 13% in 2019 to 20% in 2024, and tripling among girls, from 2.7% in 2019 to 8.7% in 2024. The percentage of student gamblers exhibiting a potentially harmful gambling profile has increased notably, nearly doubling from 4.7% in 2019 to 8.5% in 2024. While this proportion remains much higher among boys, the increase is more pronounced among girls. "Environmental and contextual factors play a more significant role in initiating gambling behaviour, while individual characteristics have a greater impact on the likelihood of being at risk," researchers Elisa Benedetti, Gabriele Lombardi, Rodolfo Cotichini, Sonia Cerrai, Marco Scalese, and Sabrina Molinaro stated in the study.
