SEC teams ranked from worst to first in odds of winning the national title
The 2025 college football season is less than two months away. This year feels as wide open as it has in a long time. A number of the teams projected to be among the best in 2025 are facing turnover at the most important position on the field, the quarterback.
11 of the 16 SEC teams will have a different quarterback than the one that started week one of the 2024 season. Two of those teams, Texas A&M and Florida found upgrades during the season by turning to younger, inexperienced signal callers like Marcel Reed and D.J. Lagway.
Five programs are banking on transfer quarterbacks giving them a boost this season, while programs like Texas, LSU, and Alabama will be relying on passers that have been in the program for more than two seasons.
The 2025 season will be here before we know it and here's how the SEC ranks in odds to win the national championship.

More: SEC schools ranked academically by U.S. News for 2025
16. Mississippi State Bulldogs
Odds to win National Championship: +100,000
Jeff Lebby has a tall order ahead of him to get the Bulldogs out of the SEC basement. The offense can create problems for opposing defenses but there's still too big of a talent gap for Mississippi State to be serious contenders.
15. Vanderbilt Commodores
Odds to win National Championship: +50,000
Diego Pavia created some of the best moments of the 2024 college football season with wins over Alabama and Auburn and playing Texas to a one-score game. Vanderbilt is the team nobody wants on their schedule but they won't win the national championship.
13 (tied). Kentucky Wildcats
Odds to win National Championship: +20,000
Mark Stoops has been one of the most consistent head coaches in the SEC but he hasn't been able to push the Wildcats to the top of the conference.
13 (tied). Arkansas Razorbacks
Odds to win National Championship: +20,000
Taylen Green and Bobby Petrino helped the Razorbacks have an improved season in 2024. However, it may be too much of an ask to expect Arkansas to be a national title contender in 2025.
12. Missouri Tigers
Odds to win National Championship: +12,500
Brady Cook was the heart and soul of the Missouri Tigers, and Eli Drinkwitz is turning to Penn State transfer quarterback Beau Pribula to lead Mizzou to the College Football Playoff.
10 (tied) Auburn Tigers
Odds to win National Championship: +6600
Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers are hoping they can rebuild Jackson Arnold's collegiate career after a rough season in Norman. The Tigers have an impressive group of wide receivers, and the defense should be pretty good.
10 (tied) Oklahoma Sooners
Odds to win National Championship: +6600
We'll find out a lot about the Oklahoma Sooners when they face Michigan in week two. If John Mateer and the offense are productive, that'll bode well for the rest of the season.
8 (tied). Florida Gators
Odds to win National Championship: +4000
The Florida Gators are hoping the production D.J. Lagway gave them in 2024 carries over to 2025. Billy Napier has recruited well. However, like Oklahoma, the Gators have one of the most difficult schedules in America.
8 (tied). South Carolina Gamecocks
Odds to win National Championship: +4000
Former three-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers was fantastic in his first year as a starter and gave South Carolina the best argument among the SEC's three-loss teams to make the playoff with a win over Clemson to close the regular season. They'll need players to step up on defense after losing significant difference makers like Kyle Kennard.
6 (tied). Texas A&M Aggies
Odds to win National Championship: +3000
Mike Elko made a strong first impression in year one in College Station. Much of their success depends on the development of quarterback Marcel Reed.
6 (tied). Tennessee Volunteers
Odds to win National Championship: +3000
Tennessee is hoping Joey Aguilar can keep Tennessee in playoff contention after taking the hard stance of letting Nico Iamaleava walk.
5. Ole Miss Rebels
Odds to win National Championship: +2500
Ole Miss is facing a ton of turnover from last year's team that went 9-3, including going from first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart to first-time starter Austin Simmons.
4. LSU Tigers
Odds to win National Championship: +2000
The LSU Tigers have one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the country leading the way in Garrett Nussmeier. If the Tigers have improved their defense, they'll be a threat to win it all.
3. Alabama Crimson Tide
Odds to win National Championship: +1500
Kalen DeBoer had Washington in the national title game two years ago. Alabama disappointed in year one of the DeBoer era with losses to Vanderbilt and the worst Oklahoma team in over 25 years. Feels a bit rich for a Crimson Tide team relying on a new starting quarterback.
2. Georgia Bulldogs
Odds to win National Championship: +650
If there was a team worth betting on in 2025, you can count on Georgia to be one of the contenders in the SEC and in the College Football Playoff. Were Gunnar Stockton a little more experienced, the Bulldogs might have fared better against Notre Dame last season.
1. Texas Longhorns
Odds to win National Championship: +500
Everybody's favorite team for 2025, the Texas Longhorns will be a disappointment if they're not at least in the national title game this season.

Marcus Freeman takes strong stance on Notre Dame football not joining a conference
The post Marcus Freeman takes strong stance on Notre Dame football not joining a conference appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Notre Dame football program is a unique one for a lot of reasons. It is one of the most storied programs in college football, and there aren't a lot of others that have experienced the success that the Fighting Irish have seen. The big difference between Notre Dame and the other elite programs in college football is that the Fighting Irish aren't in a conference. They are an independent, but as the landscape of the sport continues to change, so could Notre Dame's conference stance. Advertisement Right now, the Notre Dame football team wants to stay independent. If it wanted to join a conference, it would. If the Fighting Irish join a conference, they would also lose one of their most unique characteristics. 'It's what this football program was built from,' Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said during an episode of The Joel Klatt Show. 'As long as we can, we will [retain independence]. I have a lot of confidence in our administration and Pete Bevacqua, or AD, that he'll always keep us in a position to be successful. So, as long as we can keep that Independence, we will.' Seeing how the last few years have gone, Marcus Freeman knows that Notre Dame has to be ready to adapt at any second. If you aren't willing to change in this era, you will get left behind. 'But, if there ever comes a time that we are at a disadvantage because we aren't in a conference, I'm sure he'll make the decision,' Freeman added. 'Along with our president, to say, 'Alright, we're gonna join one of these conferences, and position ourselves to not be negatively impacted by being Independent.'' Advertisement With the way that the College Football Playoff is trending, not being in a conference could end up hurting the Fighting Irish. Conference champions get special treatment like automatic bids, and teams in the SEC and the Big Ten seem to get looked at in a different light compared to teams in other conferences. 'I think if you talk about being at a disadvantage to make the postseason,' Freeman continued. 'Because you're not in the Playoff. Or, if there comes a time when teams won't schedule you because the Big Ten or the SEC are saying we're gonna play nine games and we'll play a crossover game and who cares about Notre Dame? Well, then I think there's going to be a point where we're forced to join a conference. But until that point happens, which it doesn't look likely, we're going to stay Independent as long as we can.' Freeman has paid attention to what has gone down, and he has a good idea of where the sport is headed. He knows that Notre Dame might have to make this big change eventually. 'I can see it trending that way,' he said. 'I don't know when that time will come. When you start adding in TV money, you start adding in scheduling, there's a lot of money involved with college football. There might come a time where there might be an outside entity that takes college football away from the NCAA. I don't know, right? The future is uncertain,' Freeman said. 'But I could see a college football system where everybody's Independent and somebody else is — very similar to the NFL — somebody else is scheduling the games, when you play each other. Then, all of a sudden, it's not based off TV deals with your conference anymore. It'll be based off regional location and things like that.' Advertisement If the Notre Dame football team does join a conference, the Big Ten would make a lot of sense. The Fighting Irish are located in the heart of Big Ten country, and Notre Dame has two rivals already in the conference in USC and Michigan. It's a move that would make sense. Texas A&M on the Brink of Two 4-Star Decommitments From the Class of 2026 Edge Rusher Samu Moala and Wide Receiver Madden Williams
Texas A&M on the Brink of Two 4-Star Decommitments From the Class of 2026 Edge Rusher Samu Moala and Wide Receiver Madden Williams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. So far, the Texas A&M Aggies have been pulling together a decent class of 2026 recruitment group. They are placed at No. 10 overall with their commits, according to 247Sports with nine 3-stars, and four 4-stars. Advertisement But nothing is permanent and head coach Mike Elko may be faced with this dilemma soon. Head coach Mike Elko reacts Lee/Imagn Images According to Texas A&M Aggies On SI, two 4-star commits are being targeted by other schools despite their declared ties to Texas A&M. Edge rusher Samu Moala and wide receiver Madden Willams could drop Elko's recruitment class of 13 to 11. Moala had official visits with Washington and UCLA even after committing to the Aggies back in Oct. 2024. Both the Huskies and Bruins are pushing for the defender to flip his initial decision. Per 247Sports Composite rankings he is the No. 24 edge in the country and No. 27 pick out of California. He is also listed as one of the seven Aggie commits part of the ESPN 300 rankings. Advertisement The 4-star wide receiver, another California native, is also being sought out by Washington. USC has also expressed interest in Williams. The class of 2026 recruit visited the Huskies on May 30 and the Trojans on June 13. Williams is another top-tier recruit as the No. 39 overall wide receiver and No. 23 recruit from California. USC may pose a difficult match, especially, for the Aggies due to location. Williams' and Moala's hometowns are roughly 30 minutes from USC, which could potentially be the reason to choose the Trojans over Elko's team. The weekend of June 20 will wrap up their visiting schedules, which will ultimately decide Texas A&M's fate with these two 4-star recruits. Texas A&M Beats Out College Football Playoff Contenders In Major Recruiting Win
Texas A&M Beats Out College Football Playoff Contenders In Major Recruiting Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Head coach Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies continue to surge on the recruiting trail ahead of the 2025 college football season. Advertisement The Aggies signed a top-10 class in Elko's first recruiting cycle and are in the hunt for a similar finish in the class of 2026. The current group, featuring 12 four-star commits, ranks seventh nationally with much of the cycle still remaining. And Wednesday's news marks a significant win for Texas A&M, which fought off some perennial powers to land four-star cornerback Camren Hamiel, the latest highly-touted recruit to pledge to the Aggies. Hamiel plays for Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, where he ranks as the top player in the state, the No. 12 cornerback and the No. 86 recruit overall in the 2026 class (ESPN). Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Lysaker-USA TODAY Hamiel (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) racked up 50 tackles (5 for loss) with three pass breakups and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, as a junior last season. Advertisement Elko and Co. were battling with defending national champion Ohio State, Oregon and Alabama for Hamiel. There is certainly now shortage of recruiting prowess among those College Football Playoff contenders, as each signed top-10 classes in 2025. Hamiel's pledge adds to a group that already features four-star cornerback Victor Singleton, also one of the top players at the position. Defensive backs coach Bryant Gross-Armiento and safeties coach Jordan Peterson played key roles in recruiting both to College Station. Hamiel is fresh off an official visit to Texas A&M and previously scheduled an official trip to Oregon on June 12.
