Autorickshaw driver held with 90,000 yaba tablets in Tripuras Agartala

Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 8 (ANI): In a major drug bust, Tripura police recovered 90,000 Yaba tablets from an autorickshaw during a routine vehicle checking operation near Amtali Bypass in Tripura's Agartala on Friday, police said. According to officials, the operation was being carried out near the Bongeshwar Bridge, where Sub-Inspector Mrinal Pal and his team were on duty. During the checking, an auto rickshaw approached the checkpoint at high speed. Despite being signalled to stop, the driver tried to flee, prompting police to give chase. The vehicle was eventually intercepted in front of a roadside eatery (dhaba) along the bypass. Upon inspection, only the driver, identified as Subir Sutradhar, was found inside. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of two bags kept on the rear seat — one blue and the other blue-and-white in colour. The bags contained several bundles and packets of Yaba tablets — approximately 40,000 tablets in one and 50,000 in the other, totalling 90,000, they said. Senior police officials rushed to the spot following the seizure. A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Amtali Police Station. The accused has been arrested and produced before the said further investigation is underway to identify others involved in the trafficking network. (ANI)

Police rescue baby hours after father sells her away for ₹5,000 to a couple

In a shocking incident, a three-year-old baby girl, Sravani, was allegedly sold away by her father, who later reportedly played a kidnap drama. However, swift action by the railway police helped save the baby within a few hours, and restore her to her mother. The accused, Saikam Mastan of Vetapalem village, Bapatla district, reportedly sold away the baby for ₹5,000 to a live-in couple Bolla Srinivasulu of Vemavaram village, Prakasam district, and Sadela Chinnari of Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Thursday night at the Vijayawada railway station. Srinivasulu is a buttermilk vendor in the railway station and his partner a beggar, according to the railway police. They were caught along with the baby while on their way to Rajahmundry. 'The accused planned to maim the baby and use her to seek alms. Police personnel rescued the baby in just a few hours after the sale and safely handed her over to her mother,'' said Government Railway Police (GRP) Circle Inspector J.V. Ramana, at a press conference here on Friday. ''All the three accused were arrested,'' Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector Ali Baig said. After selling away the baby Mastan consumed liquor and bought clothes with the money. At 10.30 p.m., he lodged a complaint with the GRP station, alleging that some miscreants had kidnapped his daughter near the waiting hall. Immediately, the GRP and the RPF personnel formed special teams and verified the CCTV footages in the railway station. 'We noticed that the accused took the baby to Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS), from where they boarded a bus to Rajahmundry. Police alerted the bus driver, Yerramsetti Vara Prasad, who confirmed that the couple was travelling in the bus with the baby,' said Mr. Ramana. The police teams alerted the Rajahmundry GRP CI, P. Srinivas, who intercepted the bus on the outskirts and took the accused into custody. When the GRP officers contacted the baby's mother, S. Venkateswaramma, she alleged that her husband had forcibly taken away the baby two days ago, and that they were searching for them. 'During questioning, Mastan confessed to have taken ₹5,000 from the other two accused. A sum of ₹1,850 has been seized from him,' Mr. Ali Baig said. A case under Section 143 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (human trafficking), and Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, has been registered against the accused, Mr. Ramana said, adding that the accused would be produced in a court.

MP: Man gets 20 years in prison for raping, impregnating minor daughter

Raisen, Aug 8 (PTI) A court in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district has sentenced a 48-year-old man to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor daughter and impregnating her. Mahesh Kumar Mali, special judge for POCSO Act cases, also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the man. 'When a protector turns into a predator, what can the victim do?" the judge asked in the judgement, passed on Wednesday. The accused (name not disclosed to protect the victim's identity) was convicted under section 376(3) (rape of minor) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, district prosecution officer Anil Mishra told PTI. The victim's mother had left home during the COVID-19 lockdown, leaving the girl, then 13-and-half years old, with her father, he said. Between November 1, 2022, and June 1, 2024, the accused repeatedly raped his daughter. On May 5, 2024, after the victim complained of colic, the accused took her to the district hospital where doctors found her to be pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl next morning and informed a woman doctor that her father had been sexually assaulting her. The doctor alerted police who arrested the accused. DNA test confirmed the paternity of the baby who was later placed in the care of Nitya Sanstha, a Bhopal-based NGO. The accused has been in jail since his arrest.
