Thursday Murder Club's Celia Imrie drops disappointing news on book adaptation

Daily Mirror3 days ago
The Thursday Murder Club is coming to Netflix on August 28 and will also be released in select cinemas on August 22
The Thursday Murder Club is arriving on Netflix on August 28 and the film, which boasts a fresh trailer, is a much-awaited adaptation of Richard Osman's novel of the same name.

Prior to the film's launch, actress Celia Imrie, who portrays retired nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, appeared on Saturday Kitchen to discuss various matters. A standout moment from the programme was a chat with presenter Matt Tebbut regarding the adaptation, with Matt emphasising the stellar cast, which features Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley.

Celia confessed not every aspect of the book's storyline had made it into the final film, expressing hope that fans would still appreciate it, remarking: "I only hope that all the readers who are so loyal to the book will be pleased with what we have done.

"Because obviously we couldn't fit all of the plot in, but no - it was a complete thrill."
She confessed she hadn't yet viewed the new trailer and enquired "Am I in it?" when the other guests remarked on how captivating it was.

The star also revealed how she utilised her sisters for research into portraying a retired nurse like Joyce.
"I have two marvellous sisters who are nurses so I had to find out where was the pulse point, and what their training was like," she revealed.
"I'm very lucky, it's been wonderful. I sort of can't believe my luck but I'm delighted."

The film was produced by Steven Spielberg and the actress confessed she felt anxious about encountering him. She confessed: "My worry is I'm very starstruck but what was I going to talk to him about? That was my absolute horror."
She recalled a captivating tale from her past, when at the tender age of 22, she found herself on tour with double Oscar winner, Glenda Jackson.
Glenda had been treated to a trip to Universal Studios and Celia managed to snag a photo inside the mouth of the notorious shark used in Spielberg's Jaws films.
The veteran actress, now 73, features in the newly released trailer for Thursday Murder Club, which hit the internet earlier in August, introducing Joyce to the rest of the club as they delve into a cold case.
However, the group find themselves in hot water when they become suspects in a fresh murder case.
Thursday Murder Club will hit select cinemas on August 22, followed by a Netflix release on August 28.

Love Is Blind Kieran Holmes-Darby's journey from gaming millionaire to reality TV star

Netflix's reality dating show Love Is Blind UK has returned for a second series on the streaming giant, with a cast of singles including self-confessed 'geek' Kieran Holmes-Darby hoping to find love in the pods. The popular dating show Love Is Blind UK is back for its second season, with a fresh batch of 30 hopeful singles looking to find love, sight unseen. The first string of episodes was released on Netflix on Wednesday, August 13, and is now available to watch. ‌ Hosts Matt and Emma Willis returned at the helm of the series, which sees singletons popping the question before they have even clapped eyes on their future partner. In a trusting concept, they rely entirely on a soul connection. ‌ They communicate in separate pods, aiming to form a deeper connection, before finally coming face-to-face with who they hope will be their life partner. This year's cast boasts a Scots nanny and make-up artist, 31-year-old Katisha Atkinson from Dumfries. ‌ However, one participant with a particularly interesting backstory is Forbes Under 30 honouree Kieran Holmes-Darby. Let's take a closer look at his million pound gaming business and journey to the reality sphere. Which gaming company did Kieran establish? At the tender age of 19, Kieran and his brother Joel Holmes-Darby launched UK esports firm Excel, now estimated to be worth millions according to the Mirror, back in 2014. The entrepreneur, now 28, has previously shared how they would spend hours gaming together remotely from their university at opposite ends of the country before deciding to create their own esports squad. Excel gained recognition for its formidable teams across popular games such as League of Legends and Fortnite, with its players competing globally. The team even featured in the BBC gaming documentary, Fight for First: Excel Esports, which aired in January 2021. ‌ Kieran told South West Londoner at the time: "It's so very exciting; it's a nice bit of recognition and I'm really happy. "I have lots of people - from school, distant relatives, people from university - messaging me to say congratulations and it's really great. "Gaming has always been a big part of our lives and we're quite competitive people by nature. It's been quite the journey from the dorm room to where we are now, but a really exciting one." ‌ Is Kieran Holmes-Darby a member of Mensa? According to Netflix's Tudum, 'secret geek' Kieran is a member of Mensa and is no stranger to achievement. At just 25, Kieran also secured a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for establishing UK esports on the global stage. To gain membership of Mensa, candidates must show an IQ within the top two per cent, either by completing their monitored examination or providing previous evidence. ‌ What does Kieran Holmes-Darby do now? In 2023, Excel combined with Spanish organisation Giants Gaming, establishing the GIANTX brand, which remains a major force in Esports. Kieran departed the organisation after the merger and has since taken on the role of Manager for the League of Legends squad Los Ratones, owned by former Excel player Marc Robert 'Caedrel' Lamont. The businessman also joined sports and gaming-focused creative agency Ear to the Ground as their Business Director. Kieran Holmes-Darby's Love Is Blind journey According to Netflix's Tudum, Kieran had been single for 18 months when they began filming Love Is Blind UK series two. Described by his pals and relatives as "the golden boy", Kieran was previously in a seven-year relationship, but is now prepared to discover romance in the pods with his potential bride. He has made it to the final five couples, alongside dance teacher Megan Jupp. Will Kieran discover what he's searching for? Viewers will have to wait for upcoming episodes to see if things pan out for the couple, which will land later this month on August 20.

Emma and Matt Willis returned to host the second series, as the pods opened for 30 new singletons to try their luck at finding someone to marry. But he quickly confessed that his head was "in a bit of a pickle" as he struggled to decide between the two. In a bold move, Kieran decided to leave Megan a personal gift, but that didn't sit well with rival Sophie. She later confronted him and slammed him for being "disrespectful" and "really rude". An annoyed Sophie said: "Your actions have made your intentions very clear." Kieran responded: "I have made a strong connection elsewhere." Sophie fired back: "I bring a lot to the table, I want to be with someone that sees that." She continued: "I wouldn't do that to you because it's a s*** feeling. "If you truly cared about how I felt you wouldn't have put me in that position. "I'm a prize, like I'm a catch and on the outside world you would see that so I'm not here to beg you to love me." Love Is Blind UK star leaves viewers 'feeling physically sick' as he details his VERY unique job Getting increasingly upset, Sophie exited the pod and tearfully said: "I just feel I'm done now." She was then seen storming off and exclaimed: "F*** this, someone needs to get this mic off me." Kieran ended up choosing Megan and they got engaged, but it was teased at the end of episode four that Sophie will come back for a cast mixer and stir up trouble with another man. Manchester-based Sophie, 28, admitted she's been single since her five-year relationship ended last year, but doesn't think she's ever been in love. Netflix teased: "Sophie admits she can be confrontational but thinks her over-protective dad and four brothers could be the reason she's still single. "She's most attracted to men who can stand up for themselves and won't let her walk all over them." Elsewhere, one contestant caught the attention of fans thanks to his unique life path. While introducing himself to singer Aanu, Patrick Justus revealed that he was a human design coach. Explaining it was "like a lifecoach but using a system called spiritual design', Patrick's biggest mantra in life was to "trust your spleen", noting that "splenic energy" was a bigger force than a gut instinct. Speaking in the pods to potential match Yolanda, Patrick said that he follows his spleen "literally to the second", later adding: "Listening to my spleen is the best way to find the love of his life." While it didn't win over Yolanda or another hopeful, Catherine, the idea intrigued singer Aanu, who sparked a connection with him. But viewers were left baffled by his continued discussion of his spleen in conversation – with some left turned off by the chat, despite finding Patrick charming, saying it made them feel ill. "I loveee Patrick, do you know how nice you have to be for me to ignore the fact you keep mentioning your spleen??" wrote one on X (formerly Twitter). "Please the word 'spleen' is just making me cringe and feel physically sick. How many times are we going to have to hear this nonsense" said a second. "This bloke and his damn SPLEEN, his spleen should have told him to stay home," said a third.
