British man's sudden death 'hard to comprehend' after fall from bike in Majorca
Phil Williams, 39, was known for 'waiting at the top of the hills' for the rest of Liverpool Braveheart Bicycle Club to catch up.
'For us Phil's 'social' pace was anything but', said Hannah Fawcett, paying tribute to his kindness and generosity after he died on Saturday.
He had been one of roughly 8,500 participants in Majorca 312, an annual amateur road race around the largest of the Balearic Islands, finishing at Playa de Muro.
Phil is understood to have fallen off his bike, crashed into railings and gone into cardiac arrest between Esporles and Valldemossa.
It is not yet clear whether he died from his injuries, or if a pre-existing health condition led to the fall on the Mediterranean island.
Event organisers said: 'Mallorca 312 OK Mobility deeply regrets the death of a participant during the celebration of the event after suffering a fall.
'We want to offer our most sincere condolences to the rider's family and loved ones and we have already made ourselves available to offer them all the support they need at these so difficult moments. Rest in peace.' https://www.instagram.com/p/DI8fVQwsdix/?img_index=1
Hannah said: 'Phil will be deeply missed by us all. An exceptional bike rider with so many outstanding achievements and a wonderful person too.
'Phil joined the club just two years ago to join us in some longer 'social' rides as he was building back fitness.'
Describing Phil as a 'team player' who also messaged to say thanks after rides, Hannah said: 'Just a few weeks ago Phil rode out to support our club 10mile TT.
'After a while it was clear it was far too cold to stand around in cycling kit. Phil cycled home, got changed and drove out to continue to support, right until the end to get the result sorted and gazebo down.
'He will be remembered always and hold a place in our hearts forever.
It is so terribly hard to comprehend what has happened. Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies with his family and friends at this very sad time.'
Well-known in Liverpool's cycling circles, Phil's death has 'truly devastated' the local community, according to family's run bike shop Giant Store Liverpool.
Describing him as a 'cycling legend, colleague and friend', a spokesperson said: 'We can't believe you're gone. All our thoughts are with your friends and family.'
Stephen Doherty, a fellow member of Liverpool Braveheart, said: 'I have lost a friend and I can't believe this has happened. I am devastated.'
William Radcliffe said: 'Phil was such a great lad. Condolences to Phil's family; such a tragedy my heart goes out to them.'
Louise Johnson said: 'This is shocking news! So sorry to hear. He was a really lovely guy. Top of his game in cycling & so humble. Rest in piece Phil.'
Further afield in Leicestershire, the Coalville-based personal coach Matt Bottrill expressed his 'profound sadness' at the loss of a 'cherished member of Team Bottrill'.
He had known Phil since spotting his 'remarkable results' in 2019. Phil went on to win several national medals.
Writing on Facebook, Matt said: 'I always recognised that Phil wasn't just an exceptional athlete but also a genuine team player.
'After the sub-7, Phil faced a challenging time when he broke his hip while competing in the Isle of Man Gran Fondo. It took him years to fully recover and regain his fitness, but his determination never wavered.
'Towards the end of last year, we began making significant progress, and we developed a comprehensive plan for his comeback this season. Over the past few months, we were in constant contact, strategising to win the road bike nationals.
'We assembled the ultimate bike and shared endless banter and ideas on how to gain an edge.
'Phil finished second on that day, a result we were both immensely proud of, and we then planned a full assault on all the national championships.
'I even joked and said, 'Well, if you're coming back, I'll ride the national 3-up'.
'Anyone who knew Phil will attest to what a wonderful person he truly was. Softly spoken, always ready to make you smile, and often finishing his sentences with 'Yes, sound.'
'His loss is a tragedy, and I promise, Phil, you will not be forgotten.
'This experience makes me realise why I set up the team – to meet incredible athletes like yourself.
'I have so many memories, buddy, and I will miss you dearly. No words can adequately describe the loss. I'm going to miss you, buddy. My thoughts go to your family.'

‘We're sorry to see him go' – ‘Seriously good' horse removed from Aidan O'Brien's yard in high-profile transfer
He is the latest in a string of top horses to leave Britain and Ireland LEGAN TENDER 'We're sorry to see him go' – 'Seriously good' horse removed from Aidan O'Brien's yard in high-profile transfer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AIDAN O'BRIEN admitted he was 'sorry' to see a 'seriously good' potential superstar sold from his yard. Irish Derby runner-up Serious Contender looks to have rock-solid form to his name. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Serious Contender, right, came close to giving Lambourn a beating in the Irish Derby - and is now leaving Aidan O'Brien's yard to continue his career in Hong Kong Credit: Getty The three-year-old colt was second to Derby king Lambourn at the Curragh when he last ran in June. Prior to that he was runner-up to William Haggas' hugely promising Arc de Triomphe contender Merchant in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. He has won two of six career races and bagged just shy of £250,000 for owners Coolmore, improving a massive 24lb in just three months. But his career will continue in Hong Kong after being sold to top trainer Danny Shum - the brains behind unstoppable Group 1 monster Romantic Warrior. New connections will be hoping Serious Contender can win even a fraction of the £21million Romantic Warrior has earned. But for O'Brien it is another top talent out the Ballydoyle door - coming hot on the heels of Royal Ascot winner Trinity College. O'Brien told the Racing Post: "His form is excellent and we're sorry to see him go, but that's what happens. "Trinity College has gone to Australia and this guy has gone to Hong Kong. That's just the way it is. "Serious Contender will do very well in Hong Kong. He'll really be suited to it. "He's a seriously good horse." Loaded Hong Kong owners have been plundering the British and Irish racing ranks in search of the next big name. And even King Charles and Queen Camilla are not immune to the huge cash being offered for some horses. The King's Falcon, who was trained by William Haggas, will move to Hong Kong to be trained by John Size. Ralph Beckett has seen Seraph Gabriel leave after he was beaten a nose in the Golden Gates Stakes at the Royal meeting. While Hampton Court third Glittering Legend is off to Hong Kong as well, having been trained by James Fanshawe previously. Both those runners will now be trained by David Eustace, the son of Newmarket trainer James and brother of Royal Ascot-winning handler Harry. Trent Alexander-Arnold responds to Liverpool transfer after emotional statement
Trent Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool at the beginning of the summer transfer window to sign for Real Madrid and he's been followed out of Merseyside by former Reds team-mate Darwin Nunez Trent Alexander-Arnold has responded after former Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez announced his move to Saudi Arabia with an emotional statement. Nunez, 26, has joined Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal for an initial fee of £46.2million. The Uruguayan played alongside Alexander-Arnold for all three of his full seasons at Anfield but the pair have both departed this summer. After completing his medical with Al-Hilal, Nunez took to Instagram and wrote a statement thanking Liverpool, who he scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for. "Thank you, Liverpool," the striker wrote. "Three years on, it's time to say goodbye. I'll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever. "I leave with a full heart, thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back - through the highs and through the lows. Liverpool will always be part of who I am. "I'll miss you more than words can say. To all the staff and my teammates - thank you, and all the very best for the future. YNWA." Alexander-Arnold was among the more the 433,000 users who 'liked' the post. Fellow ex-team-mates Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson Becker, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic also liked his post. Nunez's departure is set to help fund Liverpool's British-record second bid for Alexander Isak, having already seen an offer of £120m turned down. The Reds also sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m last month. Despite having entered the final few weeks of his contract, Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid also brought in a fee of £10m. The 26-year-old will begin life in La Liga next Tuesday when Real host Osasuna. His replacement at Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong, scored on his debut for the Reds against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. Frimpong ended up on the losing side, though, as Palace won a penalty shootout following their 2-2 draw. But will Slot replace Nunez before transfer deadline day on Monday, September 1? "We think we already have a lot of attacking power in our team," the Liverpool manager said last week. "I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong who can play as a right winger, Florian Wirtz who can play as a left winger... I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my squad, but always as a club we are looking at the chances in the market but that can also be in the midfield and the last line."
