Three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bengaluru face 2014 finalists Punjab Kings in the final of the 2025 Indian Premier League at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday, with the world's biggest T20 league set to crown a first-time champion regardless of the result. read more

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu is among those backing Royal Challengers Bengaluru to finally end their 18-year wait for an Indian Premier League (IPL) title as they face Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Neither RCB nor PBKS have won a season despite being part of the world's biggest T20 league since its inception in 2008, meaning the IPL will witness a first-time champion on Tuesday regardless of which team ends up on the winning side.

RCB 'truly deserve this season', says six-time IPL winner Rayudu
'There has always been an amazing cricketing rivalry between the three great southern cities… I think it's time for the great city of Bangalore to win their first ever IPL trophy tonight, which they truly deserve this season… Go RCB… bring it home,' Rayudu, who won three titles each with Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, wrote on X.
After finishing second on the points table with a victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the final league match of the season, RCB stormed into the final after outplaying PBKS in Qualifier in Mullanpur. Suyash Sharma and Josh Hazlewood collected three wickets each while opener Phil Salt struck an unbeaten 56 as Bengaluru bundled Punjab out for just 101 before chasing the target down with 8 wickets and half of their overs to spare.
Punjab, however, bounced back in the subsequent match, with skipper Shreyas Iyer smashing an unbeaten 87 to steer his team to a five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad. MI had defeated Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator in Mullanpur, but stumbled in the penultimate game of the season for the second time in three seasons.
While PBKS have made it to the final just once, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 final, RCB have finished runners-up thrice – each time with a different captain. While the Anil Kumble-led side lost to Deccan Chargers in 2009, the team led by Daniel Vettori were vanquished by MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings two years later.
The only time batting superstar Virat Kohli led the franchise into the final was in 2016, the season in which he amassed a record 973 runs. Despite their outstanding performance that season, RCB ended up losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final.

'Worse stampedes have occurred': Siddaramaiah after Chinnaswamy incident
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday addressed the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where 11 people were killed and nearly 50 were injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. Speaking at a press conference, Siddaramaiah acknowledged the severity of the tragedy but cautioned against comparisons. 'Many stampedes have occurred,' he said. 'Even worse ones have happened. Using that I am not defending... it happened... in Kumbh Mela also... in Kumbh Mela about 50–60 people died,' he added, referencing the incident at this year's Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where 30 people were killed and 60 injured. State not organiser, says Siddaramaiah He highlighted that 'more than one lakh people gathered in front of Vidhana Soudha, but thankfully, no untoward incident happened there. However, in the stadium, where the capacity is 35,000, around 200,000 to 300,000 people turned up. This was entirely unexpected." RCB victory celebration: Casualties and investigation update Providing an update on the injured, Siddaramaiah confirmed that 47 people sustained injuries, most of them minor, and none were in critical condition. 'All the injured are out of danger,' he added. A full inquiry into the incident has been initiated. Preliminary reports suggest the tragedy began when a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium collapsed under the weight of fans standing on it. The sudden collapse caused panic and led to the fatal stampede. Massive crowd overwhelmed arrangements at M Chinnaswamy Stadium Fans had gathered in massive numbers to celebrate RCB's first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. Police estimates suggest that between 200,000 and 300,000 people gathered in and around the stadium, despite its 35,000-seat capacity. What was meant to be a jubilant public celebration turned chaotic due to inadequate access control and poor communication by organisers. 'There are small gates. People entered forcibly and even broke some. Nobody expected this scale of crowd. Prima facie, it looks like a coordination failure,' Siddaramaiah said. (With agency inputs)

"Not Good Captain, Not Right For IPL Team": Virat Kohli's Critics Shut Down By Rajeev Shukla
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended 18 years of misery as the Rajat Patidar -led side defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Virat Kohli, the only constant in the franchise over the last 18 years, finally tasted success in the T20 league, while also playing an important role in the team's triumph. With the win, Kohli didn't just extend his legacy in Indian cricket but also sent a message to all those who questioned his leadership, adaptability to the T20 format. Rajeev Shukla, the man touted to become the next Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, shut down critics in style as Virat finally made the 'Ee sala cup namde' prophecy true. "See, to me, it feels like - amongst those who've played the IPL over the last 18 years - Virat has been the constant. And he tried many times to make Bangalore champions, to make RCB champions, but it never happened. People often criticised him, said things like 'he's not a good captain,' 'he's not right for an IPL team' - this and that," Shukla said in a chat with India Today. Though RCB haven't been as successful as Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings in IPL history, the franchise enjoys unmatched fan following. For Shukla, the popularity that the Bengaluru side has is all because of Virat Kohli. "But whatever the case may be, it's because of Virat that RCB has such a big fan base and popularity. People around the world follow this team because of him. No matter where a match is played, if Virat's team is playing, it will be known by his name," Shukla added. Virat was RCB's top-scoring batter this season, finishing the IPL 2025 campaign with 657 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.75. He struck at a strike rate of 144.71, with his highest score being 73 not out. Listen to the latest songs, only on
