Former India batter Ambati Rayudu is among those backing Royal Challengers Bengaluru to finally end their 18-year wait for an Indian Premier League (IPL) title as they face Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Neither RCB nor PBKS have won a season despite being part of the world's biggest T20 league since its inception in 2008, meaning the IPL will witness a first-time champion on Tuesday regardless of which team ends up on the winning side.

RCB 'truly deserve this season', says six-time IPL winner Rayudu
'There has always been an amazing cricketing rivalry between the three great southern cities… I think it's time for the great city of Bangalore to win their first ever IPL trophy tonight, which they truly deserve this season… Go RCB… bring it home,' Rayudu, who won three titles each with Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, wrote on X.
After finishing second on the points table with a victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the final league match of the season, RCB stormed into the final after outplaying PBKS in Qualifier in Mullanpur. Suyash Sharma and Josh Hazlewood collected three wickets each while opener Phil Salt struck an unbeaten 56 as Bengaluru bundled Punjab out for just 101 before chasing the target down with 8 wickets and half of their overs to spare.
Punjab, however, bounced back in the subsequent match, with skipper Shreyas Iyer smashing an unbeaten 87 to steer his team to a five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad. MI had defeated Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator in Mullanpur, but stumbled in the penultimate game of the season for the second time in three seasons.
While PBKS have made it to the final just once, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 final, RCB have finished runners-up thrice – each time with a different captain. While the Anil Kumble-led side lost to Deccan Chargers in 2009, the team led by Daniel Vettori were vanquished by MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings two years later.
The only time batting superstar Virat Kohli led the franchise into the final was in 2016, the season in which he amassed a record 973 runs. Despite their outstanding performance that season, RCB ended up losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final.

The upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) might be six months away but the cash-rich franchise T20 is making headlines after former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that Chennai Super Kings have made an under-the-table deal to sign South African Dewald Brevis midway into the previous season. The whole Brevis-CSK saga came up after the South African slammed his maiden T20I hundred against Australia recently a couple of days back. Following the hundred, former South African captain AB de Villiers claimed Brevis to be CSK's biggest 'masterstroke' while nine other IPL teams missed a 'golden opportunity.' Brevis was signed by CSK in place of injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh for an amount of ₹ 2.2 crore after the 22-year-old went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction despite a base price of ₹ 75 lakhs. In the video, Ashwin revealed a lot of teams wanted to sign Brevis as a replacement. But CSK won the right-hander, known as 'Baby AB', after intense negotiations with his agents. The 38-year-old explained that players like Brevis holds the negotiation power as they know that they will get more than their base price at the auction next year if performed well. 'About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price,' Ashwin said. 'But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come. That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year,' added Ashwin, who was bought by CSK in IPL 2025 mega auction last year for almost ₹ 10 crore. "And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with ₹ 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," he added. Ashwin remarks have sparked speculations about IPL teams' under-the-table formula while trying to sign big names post auction as injury replacements. Payments outside the contract is considered as a breach of conduct and could lead to penalties to both parties - player and the franchise. In IPL 2025, Brevis scored 225 runs in six matches for CSK, thus adding stability in the middle order and also smashed two fifties. During the season, Brevis hit 17 sixes, the second-most by a CSK batter that in 2025. Before coming to CSK, Brevis had played 10 matches for Mumbai Indians.
