Harmanpreet Kaur hits ton as India celebrate ODI series victory over England

Independent22-07-2025
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur smashed a century as India claimed a 13-run victory over England to win the one-day international series at Chester-Le-Street.
Kaur blasted a brilliant 102 off 84 balls to put her team in control towards the end of their innings and was aided by a half-century from Jemimah Rodrigues as the pair put on 110-runs together.
Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol both scored 45 as the visitors set a lofty target of 319 and England quickly slipped into trouble when Kranti Goud claimed the scalps of Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones in the first three overs.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Emma Lamb led the recovery effort for the hosts with a mammoth 162-run partnership and the England skipper continued to shine before falling just short of a ton on 98.
England lost four wickets in the final five overs and Goud proved to be pick of the bowlers with six scalps as the hosts slipped to a 2-1 ODI series defeat.
After winning the toss, India openers Mandhana and Pratika Rawal enjoyed a comfortable start, but England responded when spinners Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone entered the attack.
Dean ended their productive 64-run partnership in the 13th over when an England review showed Rawal had feathered behind to Jones.
Spin continued to prove fruitful as Ecclestone took Mandhana's wicket after she chipped the ball straight to Sophia Dunkley at mid-wicket.
Deol and Kaur kept the scoreboard ticking by – putting on 81-runs – but Bell then struck in the 33rd over to dismiss Deol, who scooped the ball in the air for Sciver-Brunt to take.
Kaur and Rodrigues wrestled back control for India towards the end of the innings and the pair began to find the rope more freely, blasting 13 boundaries inside five overs.
Their partnership was broken shortly after Rodrigues reached 50 when she clipped the ball behind to Jones off Lauren Filer.
Kaur's starring innings was ended just after bringing up her ton in the 47th over as she fell to Linsey Smith, with Sciver-Brunt making an excellent diving catch.
Richa Ghosh added a quick cameo of 38 from 18 deliveries as India finished on 318 for five, but England's reply got off to a disastrous start when Goud smashed Beaumont's stumps in the opening over.
Goud struck again in the third when Jones edged to Deepti Sharma, who made a stunning grab to her right.
Lamb was dropped on six, but India started to pile the pressure on, with Goud and Sneh Rana bowling a great spell of dot balls in the powerplay.
Sciver-Brunt and Lamb stabilised England's innings, both scoring much-needed half-centuries and working well together to bring up 153-runs from 160 deliveries in the 29th over.
The momentum shifted when Shree Charani found the breakthrough to bowl Lamb for 68 and Sciver-Brunt was next to fall after the ball glanced off her glove off Sharma and into the hands of Ghosh.
Dunkley was run out for 34 as India looked to close the game out in the final 10 overs and on her return to the attack, Goud dismissed Dean for 21, with Rodrigues making a diving catch.
The wickets quickly tumbled as Rodrigues made another solid grab to dismiss Ecclestone off Charani and Alice Davidson-Richards hit a stubborn 44 before Goud struck again.
Goud bowled new batter Filer the following ball and claimed a sixth scalp in Bell with the final delivery of the game as England fell short.

Michael Vaughan explains why England will need 'psychoanalyst' for Ashes in Australia, as Alastair Cook issues warning over Liam Dawson

England will be under the microscope like never before in the Ashes later this year, warns Michael Vaughan. The former captain believes Brendan McCullum's side need to prepare themselves for a hostile media onslaught in Australia. He noted the reaction Down Under to the incident at the end of England's fourth Test draw with India, when Ben Stokes attempted to shake hands and end the game before Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar completed their centuries. Speaking on The Overlap and Betfair 's Stick to Cricket show, Vaughan said: 'Over the course of the two days after, Australia have piped up, haven't they. They're properly getting stuck in. Apparently, Ben Stokes didn't shake their hands, well he did. 'It's just an early indication that going into November and the Ashes, this Ashes series is going to be hot. The Aussie press - if I was the England team, I'd get ready. He continued: 'I hope they've got some kind of psycho-analyst to explain to them when they land in Australia this time, those cameras are going to follow them everywhere, so don't think you're going to get away with anything, whether it's on a golf course, in a bar or in the hotel. (L-R) David Lloyd, Alastair Cook, Andy Zaltzman, Phil Tufnell and Michael Vaughan discussed the upcoming Ashes series on The Overlap and Betfair 's Stick to Cricket show 'You know what they're like in Australia. As soon as they walk through the airport, they'll be straight in their face. 'The team have got to get ready, because they are going to write some stories and bring up some old pasts.' Sir Alastair Cook then noted that the media intensity can also work the other way if England get off to a good start and pressure flips to the hosts. He said: 'The media turn quite quickly on them, the Aussies. The one time we played well there, out of four, as soon as you get your noses ahead and you start playing well, they're right on the Aussies' backs.' England brought in spinner Liam Dawson to replace the injured Shoaib Bashir but toiled and was unable to take crucial fourth-innings wickets. Cook said: 'The problem for Liam Dawson is that he's 35-years-old now, this is his DNA now - he's been a brilliant one-day performer and a four-day performer for Hampshire. 'The balance for England is that Dawson will offer a lot in the first innings in terms of control, runs, but when you're desperate to bowl a side out, he's probably not the man who's going to bowl those jaffas. 'As a tactical thing, for a captain or a selector, do you want to be conservative, he's probably a conservative choice. He strengthens the batting and you've got control without someone who's probably going to get you a 5fer.' And Phil Tuffnell was of the same mind, adding: 'I felt a little bit sorry for Liam Dawson to get that pitch on his first Test in eight years. 'In that first innings he did what he did - you need one or two and get yourself going. Three an over and it's not bad, you've done all right. 'But when you come to the second innings, with rough holes, left-handers, and all sorts of things, you've just got to be a little bit craftier. 'It was just a bit predictable - he just sort of fired it in. You've got to try a little bit of oochkie, a bit of manoochkie. 'I was a little bit disappointed, it was a slab, it was tough, and it was hard work. He'll be disappointed because you've got to get your spinner to get you two or three, three or four in the second innings just to get you through and help the seamers. 'I was a little bit disappointed - there was some rough there, but he didn't quite get it in it. He was a bit full.'

Having won a 1m 2f Chelmsford novice and a 1m 4f Haydock handicap, Alan King's three-year-old was then third in a useful handicap back over 1m 2f at Newmarket on his most recent outing this month, being found out by the shorter trip but still running well. Selection: Kurakka 1pt win @ 7/1 with Betfred Go to site > 1.55 Goodwood – Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3, 7f; ITV1 & Racing TV) JABAARA was first past the post in this race last year but was subsequently disqualified for causing interference, however she ought to go well again. Roger Varian's four-year-old filly can be excused a below-par run behind Cloud Cover at Chelmsford last time out as she made a lot of the early running from a wide draw. But before that she had won a Listed race at Musselburgh. 2.30 Goodwood – Molecomb Stakes (Group 3, 5f; ITV1 & Racing TV) LADY IMAN was beaten into second as the 8/15 favourite in a Group 2 contest at the Curragh last time out, but that was over 6f and she didn't see the trip out after travelling easily. She had won her three previous starts, including a 5f Listed race at the Curragh in which True Love finished second, albeit that one was making her debut and has since won twice at Group 2 level. Lady Iman did win over 6f on her third start, in a Group 3 race at Naas, defeating subsequent Group 2 winner Green Sense. But this drop back in distance looks like playing to her strengths. Selection: Lady Iman 1pt win @ 6/4 with Betfred If you already have a Betfred account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use on this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts 3.05 Goodwood – Sussex Stakes (Group 1, 1m; ITV1 & Racing TV) Is FIELD OF GOLD a good thing? The one worry is that this track might not be ideal for the John and Thady Gosden-trained three-year-old, who might prefer a flatter course than Goodwood. It was only three starts ago that he got caught out by the undulations of Newmarket, getting outpaced off a steady gallop and running on too late when second in the 2,000 Guineas. However, he has since shown himself to be top class with uber-impressive victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, so there's no opposing a horse who simply has tons of natural ability. 3.45 Goodwood – Class 2 Fillies' Handicap (1m 2f; ITV1 & Racing TV) There should still be better to come from the William Haggas-trained WONDER STAR. This daughter of Sea The Stars won an Ascot maiden over this trip in decent style on her seasonal reappearance. She flopped eight days later in a Listed race at Newbury, but it says something that she was pitched into that level so soon and, 74 days on, she's potentially capable of better with a handicap mark of 82 looking workable. 4.20 Goodwood – Class 2 Fillies' Conditions Stakes (5f; Racing TV) This can go to ZELAINA (NAP), who cost £650,000 in April and won a Nottingham maiden on her debut in June. It's her next start that makes her of particular interest, as she showed so much speed in the 5f Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, leading early before fading to finish eighth of 23. Down in class and on a less demanding track, she should be hard to live with today. 4.55 Goodwood – Class 3 Handicap (7f; Racing TV) It has taken a little while for DEFENCE MINISTER to find his form this year, but he was an encouraging second at Sandown on his latest outing and looks capable of building on that. His connections felt he was good enough for the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes last year. He found the company a bit tough and may have been unsuited by soft ground in finishing last of the six runners. But he's going the right way again now and this big-field contest should suit his strong-travelling style. Stall 12 is slightly wider than ideal but not a disaster. The final pointer is that James Doyle, retained rider for Wathnan Racing, has seemingly picked him over the owner's other two runners, who look to have fair claims from lower draws. Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence If you want to find more odds and offers, take a look at our list of the best betting sites and free bets Check out our list of the best casino bonuses in the UK
