NFL draft analyst weighs in on Jaguars selecting RB Ashton Jeanty at pick No. 5
A thought that is picking up steam, at least among draft analysts, is that running back Ashton Jeanty to the Jacksonville Jaguars at pick No. 5 makes a lot of sense.
In Dane Brugler's recent seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, he had Jeanty going to the Jaguars. Gennaro Filice of NFL.com had the same selection in his recent mock as well.

Now, CBS Sports draft analyst Chris Trapasso believes Jeanty to the Jaguars is in play.
On a recent appearance on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Sports Radio with Damon Amdendolara, Trapasso was asked if he thinks the Jaguars are going to pick Jeanty at fifth overall.
"At this point I do," said Trapasso, "and I think we also have to remember that the first round, especially at the top, always gives us a few surprises. For as much as, yes, Mason Graham would be the chalk pick, the defensive tackle from Michigan, everything that you just laid out, Liam Coen, the head coach, is an offensive-minded guy. James Gladstone their young GM, 34-years-old, the youngest GM in the NFL, comes over from the LA Rams and you could think maybe a younger GM would understand the modern day value of the running back and would wait at that position.
"But we've also seen what Jahmyr Gibbs has done in Detroit as a former first-round pick. He's really helped that roster being so explosive and then obviously Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. There's been a little bit of a change of tune in terms of the value of a rookie deal running back might be a little bit better than we thought just a few years ago. That was one of the bigger talks, outside of Shadeur Sanders, at this year's combine."
When Liam Coen said last week that he wants balance around Trevor Lawrence so that he doesn't have to do it all on every single play, adding Jeanty to the offense would certainly lighten that playmaking workload that can often fall on the quarterback's shoulders.

Jeanty was a Heisman Finalist this past season after rushing for a whopping 2,595 yards with 29 touchdowns, while averaging just under 7.0 yards per attempt, per PFF.
Basically, pick a key running back metric, and in many instances, Jeanty was not only at the top of that list, but he was at the top by a wide margin.
Having a strong running game can do wonders for the passing game. For one, it keeps the offense out of predictable passing situations, it opens up opportunities for the passing game to exploit, and in Coen's offense specifically, the running game and passing game concepts go hand-in-hand and build off of each other.
But with that said, when it comes to whether or not the Jaguars would make this pick, my guess is that it comes down to how they feel about the offensive line--a unit that they invested in during free agency, which helped raise the floor, but there are still some unknowns in regards to what Jacksonville actually has with their starting five.

For a Jaguars team that is in the midst of reshaping its roster under new leadership, I believe the prudent roster-building move would be to make sure they are stout in the trenches before going all-in on the skill positions. And if the Jaguars already feel they've accomplished that on the offensive line, then by all means make the pick.

While Colts' QB Anthony Richardson is sidelined, Daniel Jones get 'a lot of reps'
While Colts' QB Anthony Richardson is sidelined, Daniel Jones get 'a lot of reps' With Anthony Richardson out during minicamp, Daniel Jones will be getting "a lot of reps" with the Colts' offense. With Anthony Richardson missing next week's minicamp practice due to a shoulder injury, Daniel Jones will take all of the first-team snaps during those three practices. Jones was signed by the Colts this offseason to compete with Richardson for the starting job. As Shane Steichen has highlighted, the plan was for the two quarterbacks to split the starting reps throughout OTAs, minicamp, and into training camp. Steichen did not put a timeline on when Richardson would return, but hopes that he can return "at some point" during training camp, according to The Athletic's James Boyd. So what we know right now is that during Thursday's final OTA practice and the three mandatory minicamp practices next week, Jones will be getting the starting reps. 'Daniel will get a lot of reps,' Steichen said via the Indy Star. 'And then we'll see how it plays out.' Jones joined the Colts after spending about five and a half seasons with the New York Giants. He was released during the second half of the 2024 season before eventually landing on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad. Over his career, Jones has been a relatively efficient passer, completing 64.1% of his throws. As ESPN's Bill Barnwell wrote recently, Jones' path to success in Steichen's offense consists of his ability to be an accurate passer when operating within the rhythm of the play, and he "should be able to handle Steichen's RPO calls" as well. However, interceptions, at times, and the ability to push the ball downfield--as Barnwell also noted--were issues that Jones and the Giants' offense had run into. 'He's been great. … Acclimating to the offense, learning it, the system. Obviously, a smart guy, understands it, he's picked it up,' Steichen said of Jones, via the Indy Star. 'He's a veteran guy that comes in early, late nights, does all the right things.' Whether it be Richardson or Jones, the Colts have a talented group at the skill positions. This includes Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for the fourth-most yards last season. The Colts were also the only team to have three separate receivers all eclipse 800 yards in 2024, not to mention that they added Tyler Warren and his do-it-all skill set to the offense this offseason as well. Along with what is taking place at quarterback, eyes should be on Tanor Bortolini and Matt Goncalves as they presumably step into larger roles, and Goncalves makes a position change to right guard. Regardless of who the starting quarterback is, consistent success for the offense begins with steady play up front. "Consistency on a daily basis," as Steichen put it, is what the Colts are looking for from the quarterback position this season.

Travis Hunter's acrobatic play in EA Sports Madden 26 trailer
Former Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter, who was one of three cover athletes in EA Sports College Football 25, will now make his first appearance in EA Sports' flagship game, Madden 26. The game will come out closer to the beginning of the NFL season, but EA Sports released a trailer for the game earlier this week. In the highlight-filled trailer, Hunter is seen grabbing a touchdown pass while diving over the goal line before celebrating with a twisting backflip. Not only did the trailer excite fans hoping to play as Hunter, but similar to EA Sports College Football 25, gamers will also be able to play with Hunter on defense and offense. One big question remains: what rating will Hunter receive upon the game's release? His Heisman trophy-winning season cemented his collegiate success in real life and virtually went from a dominant 97 to an elite 99 overall, making him the top player in the game. While it is unlikely that the Jaguars' rookie receives a 99 rating right off the bat, a low 80s rating seems to be the sweet spot for highly touted rookies. Hunter will have to battle Las Vegas Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty, Tennessee Titans Cam Ward and New York Giants Abdul Carter to be the highest-rated rookie. Colorado's former star is a strong candidate as the top-rated rookie after winning the Heisman and finishing the 2024 season with 36 total tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble on defense. On offense, Hunter was even more impressive, putting up 1,258 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns, leading the way to him becoming the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft. Jaguars' Travis Hunter is fitting in just fine in Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Jaguars' unicorn, Travis Hunter, seems to be on his way to seamlessly make the transition from collegiate amateur to NFL superstar. Hunter has yet to even take a snap, and yet his impact has already been felt both on the practice field and all over Duval County. Just this week, Hunter went viral yet again for an insane interception at the Jaguars' OTAs, but how is Hunter handling the transition to the NFL? Advertisement Action Sports Jax's Brent Martineau sat down with Hunter and discussed what it's been like for him since being drafted and what life is like inside the building. When asked that very question, Hunter replied, 'It's going great, it's a dream come true, and just happy to be out here with the guys, just being goofy and being myself.' 'I'm enjoying being a Jag, just being here, being able to play and being in the league, living my dream like I said before,' Hunter said. For some, the pressure might be too much. The day Hunter was drafted, he instantly became the franchise's most popular player ever. For many, that pressure can be overwhelming, but for Hunter, it almost seems natural. Advertisement He's just focused on football and being the very best player he can be for Head Coach Liam Coen and the rest of the coaching staff. Speaking of Coen, Hunter said he's picking things up quickly in Coen's playbook. 'The playbook is of course harder here, but I just go about it the same way, do what I have to do to be on the football field and playing fast,' Hunter said. Hunter went on to say that he's a perfect fit for Coen's offense. 'I fit perfectly. One of the guys, going to get the ball in the right spot and do my job,' Hunter said. Even so, Hunter doesn't want to set goals for himself just yet and knows he needs to be patient with himself. Success isn't instant gratification; it takes time and effort, and he knows that. Advertisement Martineau asked about Hunter's patience, to which he replied, 'Yeah, a little bit, gotta be patient. Coaches understand they are putting a lot on our plate right now, but as a player, you want to do everything right, you want to make sure you do everything right.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Luckily, it seems Hunter is fitting right in with his teammates inside the building and is already forming a bond with Jaguars' star receiver, Brian Thomas Jr. The two, combined, could form what is one of, if not the best, young receiver duos in the NFL. When asked what stands out about Thomas, Hunter said, 'His work ethic. He's going to do exactly what coach wants but he's also going to make a play every time the ball comes to him.' It's up to quarterback Trevor Lawrence and company to take advantage of the new offensive toys and get to work. When the games come, Hunter knows his team will be ready. 'You are going to see a group of guys that love the sport and group of guys that will work hard for each other, not just for themself for the rest of the guys on the team,' he said.
