Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle named undrafted free agent rookie to watch this summer
Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle named undrafted free agent rookie to watch this summer One of the Indianapolis Colts' defensive tackles was named an undrafted free agent rookie to watch for this summer. Defensive tackle Devonta Davis was named the Indianapolis Colts' undrafted rookie to watch this summer by Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports. "Davis thrives dispatching blockers and sticking running backs close to the line of scrimmage," wrote Trapasso. "At over 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds with arms nearly 33 inches, he has the measurables to stand out in camp and in the preseason as an active run-plugger." After four seasons at Jackson State, Davis transferred and played at Florida Atlantic this past season. As Trapasso noted, Davis' pass rush production won't leap off the page, which contributed to him going undrafted. In 2024, he tallied just 13 pressures and had a career high of 20 during the 2022 season. However, Davis' greatest impact came against the run. Out of 200-plus defensive tackles, Davis ranked 53rd in PFF's run defense grade and 92nd in run-stop rate. Where Davis would fit within this Colts' defense is as a rotational run defender, seeing the field on early downs when Grover Stewart isn't on the field. "What a team would get in a player like me is a player that is always willing to learn new things and player that's always trying to get better no matter what it is," Davis said in an interview with NFL Draft Diamonds. We know that at the top of the Colts' defensive tackle depth chart are DeForest Buckner and Stewart, but how the rotation behind them shakes out remains to be seen. GM Chris Ballard did add Neville Gallimore in free agency and then drafted Tim Smith, along with claiming Eric Johnson on waivers recently. Those three will join Adetomiwa Adebawore and compete for playing time and the final three or so roster spots. Davis is at a position group where there are some unknowns around the depth, and that is a necessary part of the equation when it comes to any UDFA making a roster push. However, like any UDFA, not that it can't be done, we saw Dalton Tucker make the Colts' 53-man roster last season, but it's always an uphill battle.

Mock draft watch: Breaking down CBS Sports 'Build the Perfect Draft' for the Lions
Mock draft watch: Breaking down CBS Sports 'Build the Perfect Draft' for the Lions The CBS Sports "With the First Pick" podcast crew offered up their "perfect" 7-round Lions mock draft. How did they do? It's always good to get some outside perspectives on the Detroit Lions and what they might do in the 2025 NFL Draft. The well-credentialed "With the First Pick" podcast on CBS Sports offered its insight on what Detroit might do. In their team-by-team "Build the Perfect Draft" series of seven-round mock drafts, CBS Sports analysts Ryan Wilson and Chris Trapasso tackled the Lions with a little under a week to go. The duo sort of painted by numbers in terms of picking out a position of need ahead of the actual player for each round and then finding players who fit. It's sort of the opposite approach of how Brad Holmes and the Lions go about their business, yet the picks here do a pretty good job of identifying Lions fits. Here's what they chose: 1st: Tyler Booker, OG, Alabama. The choice here went against their stated desire to bolster the defense, and it's because of positional scarcity; the DL and EDGE group is quite a bit deeper than the interior OL, notes Trapasso, and Booker's stylistic fit in Detroit is easy to see. The Lions do need a ready-to-roll guard. 2nd: C.J. West, DT, Indiana. Chosen after discussions about Shemar Turner and Omar Norman-Lott, this is quite a bit earlier than West is generally projected. Both Wilson and Trapasso compared him to Lions star Alim McNeill, and this is the range where McNeill was selected too. 3rd: Femi Oladejo, EDGE, UCLA. Trapasso smartly notes the similarity between Oladejo and Tampa Bay's Yaya Diaby, a late convert to pass rusher who has become a good NFL pass rusher--and did so under new Lions DL coach Kacy Rodgers. My personal take: flip Oladejo into the 2nd and drop West to this third-round spot and it seems more realistic. 4th: Tory Horton, WR, Colorado State. Wilson talked up his physicality on the outside and how well he handled being the focal point of the CSU offense before being hurt. 6th: Jordan Hancock, S, Ohio State. They looked hard for a safety who can feasibly play in the slot as well as split-safety looks, and settled on Hancock over a few other candidates who were more box-safety types. 7th: Fadil Diggs, EDGE, Syracuse. "No Lions fan would be upset with double-dipping at EDGE", notes Trapasso, and Wilson points out Diggs' impressive size and pass-rush style as a fit. 7th: Moliki Matavao, TE, UCLA. Solid TE3/TE4 prospect who can block fairly well and offers upside as a receiver. They only looked at TE here despite striving to land "best player available". Overall, this wound up being a draft that most Lions fans could embrace, even if it unfolded a little unconventionally.

NFL draft analyst weighs in on Jaguars selecting RB Ashton Jeanty at pick No. 5
A thought that is picking up steam, at least among draft analysts, is that running back Ashton Jeanty to the Jacksonville Jaguars at pick No. 5 makes a lot of sense. In Dane Brugler's recent seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, he had Jeanty going to the Jaguars. Gennaro Filice of had the same selection in his recent mock as well. Advertisement Now, CBS Sports draft analyst Chris Trapasso believes Jeanty to the Jaguars is in play. On a recent appearance on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Sports Radio with Damon Amdendolara, Trapasso was asked if he thinks the Jaguars are going to pick Jeanty at fifth overall. "At this point I do," said Trapasso, "and I think we also have to remember that the first round, especially at the top, always gives us a few surprises. For as much as, yes, Mason Graham would be the chalk pick, the defensive tackle from Michigan, everything that you just laid out, Liam Coen, the head coach, is an offensive-minded guy. James Gladstone their young GM, 34-years-old, the youngest GM in the NFL, comes over from the LA Rams and you could think maybe a younger GM would understand the modern day value of the running back and would wait at that position. "But we've also seen what Jahmyr Gibbs has done in Detroit as a former first-round pick. He's really helped that roster being so explosive and then obviously Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. There's been a little bit of a change of tune in terms of the value of a rookie deal running back might be a little bit better than we thought just a few years ago. That was one of the bigger talks, outside of Shadeur Sanders, at this year's combine." When Liam Coen said last week that he wants balance around Trevor Lawrence so that he doesn't have to do it all on every single play, adding Jeanty to the offense would certainly lighten that playmaking workload that can often fall on the quarterback's shoulders. Advertisement Jeanty was a Heisman Finalist this past season after rushing for a whopping 2,595 yards with 29 touchdowns, while averaging just under 7.0 yards per attempt, per PFF. Basically, pick a key running back metric, and in many instances, Jeanty was not only at the top of that list, but he was at the top by a wide margin. Having a strong running game can do wonders for the passing game. For one, it keeps the offense out of predictable passing situations, it opens up opportunities for the passing game to exploit, and in Coen's offense specifically, the running game and passing game concepts go hand-in-hand and build off of each other. But with that said, when it comes to whether or not the Jaguars would make this pick, my guess is that it comes down to how they feel about the offensive line--a unit that they invested in during free agency, which helped raise the floor, but there are still some unknowns in regards to what Jacksonville actually has with their starting five. Advertisement For a Jaguars team that is in the midst of reshaping its roster under new leadership, I believe the prudent roster-building move would be to make sure they are stout in the trenches before going all-in on the skill positions. And if the Jaguars already feel they've accomplished that on the offensive line, then by all means make the pick. Five Gators projected to go in 2025 NFL draft by CBS Sports
Five Gators projected to go in 2025 NFL draft by CBS Sports The 2025 NFL draft begins in less than two weeks, and a handful of Gators expect to hear their name called over the three-day event. CBS Sports analyst Chris Trapasso released a full seven-round mock draft on Wednesday and has five Gators going on Day 3 of the draft. While five draftees would exceed last year's total of one — Ricky Pearsall at No. 31 in the first round — it would mark the first time Florida didn't produce a Day 1 or 2 pick since 2012, when Jaye Howard went in the fourth and Chris Rainey followed in the fifth. Trapasso sees receiver Elijhah Badger coming off the board first for the Gators in the fourth round to the Carolina Panthers. Defensive tackle Cam Jackson is a projected fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers, joining Ricky Pearsall, and Trapasso sees the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trading up to get linebacker Shemar James in the sixth. James had eligibility left but opted to enter the draft instead of returning for his senior year. Florida's linebacker room is a bit crowded with young talent, but James would still have been the leader of that position room and received plenty of playing time. Rounding out the draft projections are offensive tackle Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson and cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., both going in the seventh and final round. Marshall played like a potential Day 2 guy for most of the season, but a season-ending injury killed his draft stock. The two surprising omissions out of Florida not on Trapasso's list are receiver Chimere Dike and running back Montrell Johnson Jr. Dike was a draft combine darling that wowed scouts and drew rave reviews, while Johnson has been a reliable back for four seasons under Billy Napier. Similar to Marshall, Johnson dealt with some injuries as a senior, but he's still a reliable back who flashed better speed at the combine than many expected. It wouldn't be surprising to see both sneak into the later rounds, despite Trapasso's projections. Gators draft projections from CBS Sports Round 4, Pick 114 (Carolina via Chicago): WR Elijhah Badger Round 5, Pick 147 (San Francisco via New Orleans): DT Cam Jackson Round 6, Pick 185 (Tampa Bay vis mock trade with Pittsburgh): LB Shemar James Round 7, Pick 218 (Atlanta via Cleveland): OT Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson Round 7, Pick 225 (Arizona via NYJ): CB Jason Marshall Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions.
