Chong demands transparency on S'wak govt's ‘extravagant' overseas trips
Chong shows the letter from the august House that rejected Yong's question.
KUCHING (May 23): Chong Chieng Jen (DAP-Padungan) has called on the Sarawak government to be transparent by disclosing details of its official overseas trips.
During a heated debate at today's Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, Chong expressed concerns over the Supplementary Supply Bill, which was recently passed with a total allocation of RM237.66 billion.
He highlighted that the Premier's Department had requested an additional RM100 million specifically for travel expenses.
'I think spending RM100 million on travelling overseas is extravagant – it is too extravagant,' he said.
He also drew attention to a written question by Violet Yong (DAP-Pending), which was ruled out, for asking for a breakdown of official overseas travel expenses incurred by the Premier, ministers, deputy ministers, and state ministries over the past five years.
The question was rejected on the grounds that it contravened public policy, Chong explained.
'What contravenes public policy – is it the act of asking the question, or the act of spending too much money to go overseas?' Chong further questioned.
'Don't treat us like three-year-old kids, we are not asking for the itinerary of the Premier. She (Yong) is asking for the information on the expenses for the past five years for overseas trips,' he added.
Calling Yong's query a reasonable request, Chong later told a press conference that the Premier's Office should publish such information on its official website.
'The answer that was given by the Deputy Speaker Datuk Idris Buang is totally unacceptable, as he said this was due to security reasons.

THE war of words between PAS and DAP over a clown caricature deemed offensive to Perak state opposition leader Razman Zakaria has escalated with the Islamist party's deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man calling on the latter to allow space for the police to conduct its probe into the matter. This came about as DAP Socialist Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is currently under police investigation over a social media post that depicted Razman who was the former Perak PAS commissioner as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope with the caption 'Raja Fitnah' (literally, 'King of Slanders'). Woo who is also the first term Pasir Bedamar state assemblyman had on April 1 uploaded the caricature in a Facebook (FB) post alongside a reference to the various instances of Razman having to apologise to Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders over various accusations he had made against them. In his defence of Razman, Tuan Ibrahim has hit out at Pahang DAP state assemblyman for Bilut, Lee Chin Chen, who was reported by Malaysiakini as having urged the police to stop their investigation against Woo. Alluding to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself seeking the much-criticised immunity from the civil suit filed by his former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, the PAS lawmaker described Lee's call as an extreme action which disrespects the legal process. 'This is as if they (DAP) have the power to prevent civil servants from carrying out the duties entrusted to them,' he rebuked in a FB post. 'The reasoning that the caricature is a form of satirical artistic expression that conveys criticism is superficial. Art should not be tainted with insulting messages, especially if it comes from a government exco against his political opponent. 'He shouldn't have interfered in police investigations because this country upholds the separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial.' In his defence over the clown caricature of Razman, Woo chided the Gunung Semanggol state assemblyman for resorting to lodge a police report instead of explaining or counter his argument with argument or to even apologise for his slew of slanders. 'Asking the police to investigate merely because of the satirical nature of the caricature is the true appearance of a Perikatan Nasional (PN) politician who is thin-skinned (berhati tisu) and easily offended (koyak),' chided the Perak state EXCO for Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, Consumer Affairs & Chinese New Villages. Recall that one of Razman's latest slander was by having mistaken Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh as the daughter of YTL Corp's late founder Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay. Why is a non-Muslim DAP rep allowed to poke his nose in the running of Islamic affairs?
MUSLIMS seem to be divided over the recent 'open-minded' move by the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council (MAINS) to include non-Muslim politicians in its Islamic affairs briefing. This came about as a pro-opposition netizen questioned the presence of the state's Industry and Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Teo Kok Seong (not to be mistaken for his controversial academician namesake) at the briefing on grounds that 'matters pertaining to Islamic affairs should shield be left to Muslims to manage by themselves'. 'Such action is incorrect and should be questioned,' he penned on X in reaction to a photo bearing the caption 'There is a DAP representative in the MAINS meeting as an observer'. 'The attendance was in line with the directive and consent of the Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir aimed at providing exposure and deepening understanding of Islamic administration in the state,' read the statemen by MAINS. The council further noted that it had previously conducted a similar briefing with all state assembly members – including non-Muslims from both government and opposition – on Oct 8 last year. This approach reflects its commitment to progressive and inclusive Islamic governance, according to the council. Many Madani government backers ticked of the poster for his narrow mindset, alluding to the point that Tuanku Muhriz as the Negeri Sembilan ruler had consented the move given Teo's attendance would further enhance the understanding of non-Muslims on the state's Islamic administration. Moreover, the poster was either oblivious or had y chosen to ignore to ignore the fact that MAINS had clarified on the matter on May 27 which is two days prior to his social media post. Ensure effective delivery of MITRA funds and initiatives
Letter to Editor IN August 2024, Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit MITRA (MITRA) chairman P. Prabakaran requested an increase in the allocation for the India community to RM300 mil in Budget 2025, up from the current RM100 mil. Prabakaran, who is also the Batu MP, said the RM 100mil allocated annually wasn't enough to effectively fund initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic status of Malaysian Indians. He highlighted concerns that the amount would be inadequate to meet the diverse needs of the community and drive meaningful upliftment programmes. Now given that MITRA has endorsed 45 applications totaling RM40 mil which are awaiting processing at the Prime Minister's Office, why is there a delay in their disbursement? Prabakaran had emphasised that the government needs to boost the budget to adequately support projects that are genuinely transformational for the Indian community. Why aren't funding initiatives for the Indian community given higher importance? As June approaches, it is concerning that the Indian community remains unaware of the actual disbursement status of the RM100 mil allocated to MITRA this year. It is crucial that these funds are approved and effectively implemented without delay to provide tangible benefits for the Indian community. MITRA opened applications for the Socioeconomic Development Grant Programme for the Malaysian Indian Community (PPSMI) 2025 from Oct 15 to Nov 14, 2024. That was about seven months ago. MITRA should undergo a full restructuring. To fulfill her May 23 PKR election promise to champion the Indian community, Nurul Izzah Anwar faces the critical task of fast-tracking MITRA's initiatives and programmes. She must guarantee the swift approval and implementation of the RM40 mil allocated for Phase 1 of Budget 2025, as any further delays will hinder tangible progress and risk the return of unutilised funds to the Finance Ministry by the third quarter of 2025. It's been almost four months since funds amounting to RM40 mil for NGOs and training organisations were approved and agreements were signed. Yet, the money remains undistributed and there's no clear execution plan in sight. This delay hinders vital community works and training initiatives The recommendation is for community development professionals and experts to lead the organization.
