Bjp councillors protest against mayor in Ludhiana and announce gherao of MC offices.
The councillors, joined by members of the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, have vowed to gherao all MC zonal offices from Monday if the mayor does not apologise. The standoff marks a rare instance of cross-party unity, with opposition leaders accusing the mayor of undermining elected representatives and marginalising BJP-held wards. "This is not about personal agendas," said BJP district president Rajnesh Dhiman.
"All councillors are elected by the people and deserve equal respect. The mayor cannot treat them like second-class members."
Mayor Inderjit Kaur, however, rejected the accusations and refused to apologise. She alleged that the BJP councillors had arrived at the meeting intent on confrontation and begun shouting when they had no substantial issues to raise. "Security was only called after they created a ruckus," she said.

"This is not about governance — this is about male councillors unable to accept a woman in charge."
She also claimed that a BJP councillor had praised her leadership privately but was now toeing the party line publicly. "They came with a motive to provoke," she said, maintaining that she was not at fault. Party insiders say the row may be fuelled by BJP's internal politics ahead of the district president's election, with hopefuls using the standoff to project their leadership.
With state elections on the horizon, some see the protest as a strategic move to close the gap left by three years of limited party mobilisation on civic issues.
Meanwhile, the protest took a symbolic turn as councillors spent Friday night inside the MC office, singing patriotic songs amid mosquito bites and rodent trouble. BJP members Vishal Gulati, Kashish Ratra, Anil Bhardwaj, Jatinder Goriyan, and others stayed overnight, with one councillor reportedly even bathing on the premises.
Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma visited the protest site on Saturday evening, praising the councillors for holding the mayor accountable. "Ludhiana is part of the Smart City Mission. It's your duty to ask how the funds are being spent," Sharma said. "The days of AAP (Aam Aadmi Party that governs Punjab and the MC house) are numbered, and they know it — that's why they are misbehaving with elected representatives.
"
He urged the mayor to "rise above petty politics" and apologise to resolve the dispute. As Monday's deadline approaches, civic tensions in Punjab's industrial hub are poised to deepen.

"A For Akhilesh": Samajwadi Party Leader Faces Case For Teaching "Politicised Alphabets"
Saharanpur (UP): A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against a local Samajwadi Party leader in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur for allegedly teaching "politicised alphabets" to children. SP president Akhilesh Yadav attacked the state government over the FIR. According to SP City Vyom Bindal, a complaint was filed by Main Singh, a resident of the Kallarpur Gurjar village, alleging that local SP leader Farhad Alam Gada was teaching children "politicised alphabets" at a "PDA Pathshala." The complainant says that the children were taught "A for Akhilesh", "B for Babasaheb", "D for Dimple," and "M for Mulayam Singh Yadav". The incident came to light after an alleged video of the lesson, recorded at the SP leader's home in Ramnagar, was posted on social media and went viral. The children in the video were reportedly from a private school and were seen wearing their uniforms. Reacting to the development, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav posted on 'X', "Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public. Now the BJP will be gone forever. Condemnable." — Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) August 3, 2025 In his defence, Farhad Gada had previously claimed that the "PDA Pathshala" was not just for teaching ABCs but also to educate children about the "great men of Samajwadi ideology." He had also stated his intention to open similar schools across the district.

Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde saves face and his2 ‘controversial' ministers
For deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena president Eknath Shinde , it seemed like a face-saving exercise when he was able to protect his trusted aide social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat, as well as minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam, son of former minister Ramdas Kadam. Even as the opposition was pressing for their removal from the state cabinet, Shinde visited New Delhi and called on Union home minister Amit Shah for a relief. According to reports, the BJP high command spoke to CM Devendra Fadnavis and conveyed the sentiments of the home minister. During the recently concluded monsoon session, a video surfaced allegedly showing Shirsat sitting in his bedroom with a bag filled with cash. In the subsequent hue and cry in both Houses of the state legislature, it was assumed that Shinde would 'sacrifice' Shirsat to protect himself. Shirsat, however, was only issued a warning. When Parab insisted on stern action against Kadam, the latter surrendered a few licences of the bar. In his arguments, Parab had raised a basic question: How can the minister of state for home's mother operate a dance bar which has been raided by police for illegal activities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo To make his point, Parab had even tabled a copy of the first information report, which had full details of the bar, name of the owner, along with the names and addresses of the girls who were caught during the raid. Parab's disclosure had caused massive embarrassment not only for Shinde, but even Fadnavis and the BJP leadership. Kolhapur HC bench soon, thanks to CJI Gavai & CM Thanks to the lead taken by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai and CM Fadavis, a new bench of Bombay high court will come at Kolhapur from Aug 18. The bench will cater to the districts of Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. A few days ago, when Gavai was in Maharashtra after he took charge as CJI, he had extended his support to the demand for a Kolhapur HC bench. Besides leading lawyers, Fadnavis too had taken up the proposal with PM Modi and successive law ministers. A few years ago, when a section of lawyers had launched an agitation in Pune demanding a Kolhapur bench, Fadnavis had extended support. The agitation was withdrawn following an intervention of the central govt. The demand fizzled out for a prolonged period, but gained momentum after Gavai took charge as CJI. State govt drops Indira Gandhi'sname from school award
Jaipur: Rajasthan govt renamed the Indira Priyadarshini Award, named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as the Padmakshi Award, given to meritorious girls studying in Classes VIII, X and XII. The govt has also reduced the prize money allocate for the scheme. The cash award under the Padmakshi Award has been fixed at Rs 25,000 for girls of Class 8, down from Rs 40,000. For girls of Class 10, the award money has been brought down from Rs 75,000 to Rs 50,000, while the prize money of Rs 1 lakh for girls studying in Class XII has been pared down to Rs 75,000. Under the Indira Priyadarshini Award, the Class 12 topper was also given a scooty in addition to the cash award. The annual, Indira Priyadarshini Award for meritorious girl students, was launched in 2010-11 by former Ashok Gehlot, with about 1200-1300 girls receiving the cash award every year. It was given away at every district headquarters on Nov 19, to mark the birthday of the former PM. In 2017-18, Raje govt changed the name of the award to Padmakshi Puruskar Yojana. When Gehlot returned to office in 2019, the scheme got back its original name. This is the third time that the scheme has been renamed, but the first time the prize money is being lowered. Rajasthan govt has now said the Padmakshi Award will be given away on Basant Panchami. The eligibility criteria for the award remains the same — a score of above 60% or 9 CGPA. TOI tried contacting education minister Madan Dilawar for a comment, but did not get a response. Dilawar's team said Saturday the revamped Padmakshi Award will be given to "encourage talented girls of general, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward classes, minority classes, extremely backward classes, BPL, and specially abled children" studying in the state. Students studying in schools under the Sanskrit education department will also be eligible. "The entire expenditure will be borne by Balika Shiksha Foundation," a govt statement informing of the change said. Dilawar's office also clarified that the state education department had nothing to do with the distribution of scooties to the meritorious girls. "Scooties are given to meritorious girls under various schemes of the higher education department and not the education department. Only the name of an existing scheme has been changed," a person from Dilawar's team told TOI. Reacting sharply to the govt's decision to cut down assistance to deserving girls in the state, Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra said BJP govt's decision was not just a cut in expenses, "but a direct attack on girl education and the dreams of daughters." "Congress govt started the scooty scheme to encourage meritorious girls, so that daughters can progress in education, their morale is boosted, and they can easily go to school-college in far-flung areas. But BJP not only changed the scheme's name, but also reduced prize money. BJP govt has proved it is neither concerned about the education of daughters, nor does it value their courage," Dotasra posted on social media.
