IND vs ENG: Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues shine in run-chase as India take 1-0 lead in ODI series
Earlier in the day, young seamer Kranti Goud impressed with two wickets upfront before Sophia Dunkley's unbeaten 92-ball 83 lifted England to a respectable 258 for six after opting to bat first and being trouble before the halfway stage when the wicket of captain Nat Sciver-Brunt fell at 87/4.
Besides Goud (2/55 in 9 overs), off-spinner Sneh Rana (2/31 in 10 overs) too picked up two wickets to continue her good form since coming back into the ODI side (although the latter left the field with an apparent hamstring issue later on).
Alice Davidson-Richards contributed 53 in 73 balls during a 106-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Dunkley, which formed the nucleus of the England innings after they lost four wickets for 97 runs. Dunkley struck nine fours during her stay in the middle.
Asked to bowl first, India enjoyed early success as Goud dismissed Amy Jones with a stunning delivery for her first international wicket in her second ODI. It was an eventful over by the 21-year-old as she bowled a hat-trick of wides before making amends with one that nipped back sharply before hitting the top of the middle stump. The wobble seam kept the batter guessing as she leaned forward to defend, only to realise that the ball has crashed through the gate.
Just as England were looking to recover from the early blow, Goud struck for the second time, a lovely inswinger trapping opener Tammy Beaumont in front of the wicket. The on-field umpire was not convinced, but an Indian review clearly showed the ball hitting the top of middle stump.
At 20 for two in the fourth over, England needed a partnership and they got it through the in-form Emma Lamb and skipper Sciver-Brunt, the duo adding 71 runs to steady the ship. However, England lost both the set batters in the space of two overs with off-spinner Sneh Rana inflicting the damage on the home side by sending back Lamb (39 off 50 balls) and Sciver-Brunt (41 off 52 balls).
The pressure got to Lamb as she hit one straight to mid-off after England failed to a get a boundary for five overs. As for Sciver-Brunt, she drove Rana uppishly for Jemimah Rodrigues to pull off an excellent catch. Dunkley and Alice then came to the home team's rescue, but both were aided by dropped catches during their partnership, with Goud and Rodrigues putting down relatively easy chances that could have helped India restrict England to a much lower total.

In the run-chase, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal once against provided a good start (their partnership tally has now crossed 1000 runs in just 21 matches). But Mandhana's dismissal brought about a slow-down as Pratika and Harleen Deol never quite found the top gear in their partnership. Then came a period where India first Rawal – Sophie Ecclestone producing a top delivery to breach her defence that also led to a spicy moment as the duo brushed shoulders. And after that Harleen was out in a bizarre fashion, failing to ground her bat or feet and finding herself short of the crease. Harmanpreet Kaur also quickly followed suit, but then came the match-defining partnership between Jemimah and Deepti that took India close to the finish line.
The highlight of Deepti's knock was a six over midwicket, where she crunched one through the leg side for the only maximum of the match. She remained unbeaten after Richa Ghosh fell and along with Amanjot, took India home with 10 balls to spare.

Olympian Pahal set to return from injury at Indian Open Athletics in Patna
Kiran Pahal will be one of the major attractions at Indian Open Athletics meet to be held at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kanker Bagh, Patna, on Saturday. Pahal, who competed at Paris Olympics and currently holds second-best timing by an Indian woman in 400m, will be making a comeback from injury and running for the first time since Paris Games. Amiya Kumar Mallick, another senior athlete from Odisha and a former 100m national record holder, will also be part of the competition. The big names aside, a total of 390 athletes will be taking part in the event of which 23 are from Bihar. Meanwhile, speaking during a press conference ahead of the event Raveendran Sankaran, director general cum CEO of Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA), said, "Very soon, an international level athletics track will be built at Patliputra Sports Complex, like the one used in Paris Olympics. This will make this complex suitable for organizing national and international level athletics competitions." The Sports Complex has already hosted several important events like the 4th Indian Open Under-23 Athletics Meet in 2024, 20th National Youth Athletics Championships and Khelo India Youth Games this year. The state has been giving a lot of importance recently and after hosting Asian Champions Trophy for women last year, it will also host the men's Asia Cup from Aug 27 to Sept 7. Union home minister Amit Shah NEW DELHI: With India having entered the race to host the 2036 Olympics, home minister Amit Shah on Friday said around 3,000 sportspersons are being provided a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 each to prepare for the games, and hoped that the country would be among the top five nations in the medal tally. Addressing an event here to felicitate the 613 medal winners of the 21st World Police and Fire Games-2025 held recently in the US, Shah congratulated the Indian police and fire services team for making the country proud. With the next World Police and Fire Games set to be held in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Kevadia in Gujarat, he exhorted all sportspersons to single-mindedly focus on winning a medal. Surfer Tayin riding success crest
CHENNAI: AT only 16 years of age, Tayin Arun is at the forefront of a new generation of talented surfers, part of a brand-new movement of Indian surfing. Enjoying an almost meteoric rise in the junior divisions, the surfer broke through to the national surfing team last year, and is now looking to prove his worth with the rest of his teammates at the upcoming ASF Asian Surfing Championships in Mahabalipuram to be held from August 3 to 12. Hailing from Akkarai, Tayin is no stranger to sports. His elder sister Eloksi Arun is a batter for the Tamil Nadu women's cricket team. Reminiscing about his earlier days, Tayin recalls, 'I remember playing many sports as a kid, and surfing seemed to be the sport that I wanted to join. But the infrastucture wasn't developed then. Moreover, many people were scared to send their younger kids out to the sea. So, I only started to learn surfing when I was nine.' Tayin learnt surfing in Kovalam at the Surf Turf, Chennai's first surfing school considered one of the best in the region. This allowed him to not only hone his craft, but also give him exposure and access to surfing equipment. 'Boards are really expensive when you import it, and sometimes not getting access to them can hamper your growth. I used the boards given to me by the TT Group (owned by Arun Vasu, the founder of Surf Turf) for many years because you couldn't get it easily from anywhere else in India," said the young surfer. Today, due to his excellent performances at tournaments such as the Covelong Classics and at the Indian Open of Surfing, he has secured himself sponsorship from the TT Group to get equipment.
