Efforts should be made to separate religion from politics: Himachal CM
Sukhu made the statement while chairing the second session of the National Conclave 'Constitutional Challenges: Perspective & Pathways" organised by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) AICC Law, Human Rights and RTI department at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, an official statement said.
He asserted that religion should not be used to divide people and called for efforts to separate it from politics.
Sukhu highlighted the need to respect every religion and urged individuals to uphold the ancient traditions of peace and brotherhood.
'We are known for our religious tolerance, and in the absence of rich values, there always remains a possibility of the emergence of violence and conflict in the society", the chief minister stated. PTI BPL MPL MPL

The Congress leader dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to directly confront Trump's claims, and said, 'If he has the courage, he will say here that Donald Trump is a liar. 50% Indira Gandhi ka courage hai toh ye bol dega,' Rahul Gandhi said in a dare of sorts to PM Modi and then went on to fix his reference to the prime minister saying, "bol denge, sorry'.

On the second day of the monsoon session of the Himachal Assembly on Tuesday, the issue of electricity subsidy and smart meter was raised prominently in the Question Hour. During this, the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu clarified that the state government has no intention of stopping the subsidy of any consumer. 'Whether a consumer has one meter or more, they will continue to get subsidy as before,' said CM. (HT Photo) The Chief Minister said that the government after the people gave up power subsidy, state government generated a revenue of ₹59 lakh from last year to 20 February 2025 as 12,000 to 15,000 people gave up electricity subsidy in the state. At the same time, ₹17.95 lakh has been spent on electricity bills of cabinet rank leaders during the same period. He also assured that the existing scheme of giving free electricity up to 125 units will continue and the government is also trying to increase it to 300 units in the future. On the progress of installing smart meters, the Chief Minister informed the house that so far 6,52,955 smart meters have been installed in Shimla city, Dharamshala city and areas under Shimla zone. This work will be completed in the remaining areas by February 2026. (HT Photo) The Mukhya Mantri Himachal Health Care Scheme (HIMCARE) is a health insurance scheme in Himachal Pradesh that provides cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year per family. Lashing out at BJP on the issue of the Himcare health scheme, the chief minister accused the previous BJP government of misusing public money. 'The BJP misused Himcare funds, squandered them on private hospitals, and created irregularities in billing. We have already released ₹550 crore for the scheme and will ensure that poor and needy patients get treatment,' Sukhu said while speaking in the house in response to the question of BJP MLA from Nachan in Mandi district, Vinod Kumar. Dissatisfied with the government's reply on the Himcare scheme in the state Assembly on Tuesday, the Opposition staged a noisy protest and left the house, accusing the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government of ruining the free healthcare facility started by the previous BJP regime. The uproar began during the Question Hour when BJP MLA Vinod Kumar raised the issue, alleging that under the Himcare scheme, people were not receiving treatment benefits in hospitals and were being forced to mortgage their valuables to pay for medical expenses. 'When questions are asked, the government says the scheme is running, but the reality in hospitals is completely different,' he charged. Responding to the allegations, Health Minister Dhaniram Shandil said that the scheme was burdened with pending liabilities of ₹364 crore. As the chief minister stood to speak about prevailing corruption in the Himcare scheme during the previous BJP government led by Jai Ram Thakur, the BJP MLAs amid loud sloganeering moved out of the house. 'Large-scale irregularities were seen in the scheme and the present government was trying to rectify,' said Chief Minister while adding 'The scheme was marred with corruption and Himcare is very much in operation in the state. We have started mapping and we are improving the same.' While speaking to the media persons outside the assembly, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur accused the government of shutting down free treatment for the poor. 'The government has ended free healthcare for the poor. People are being forced to mortgage their jewellery to get treatment. When this issue was raised in the Assembly, the ministers and even the Chief Minister laughed. I have never witnessed such inhuman behaviour. Health and education in the state have sunk to the lowest level ever,' Thakur said.
