EC sources say inquiries on to verify authenticity of Tejashwi's second voter card; suspect forgery

While asserting that his name figures in the draft at serial number 416, officials said even if he still had any grievance, he should have followed the legal procedure laid down.
To prove that his name was not on the draft rolls, Yadav had entered a voter identity card number, which showed no records.
New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) The Election Commission on Saturday dubbed as 'baseless' claims of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls of Bihar as poll body sources said inquiries were on to understand the 'reality' behind the second voter card.
Meanwhile, the EC sources said that the RJD leader used the electoral roll with EPIC no. RAB0456228 for filling his nomination papers on affidavit in 2020.
'He was having this voter ID card number even in the electoral roll in 2015. His name with this voter card number exists in the draft electoral rolls too,' an official pointed out.
The other voter card with the number — RAB2916120 — has been found to be non-existent, and records from the last more than 10 years have been checked, the sources said.
They said no records have been found for the second card number 'yet'.
'It is highly likely that the second card was never made through an official channel. Further inquiries are on to understand the reality of the second voter card number… whether it is a forged document,' the official cited above said.
Yadav on Saturday claimed his name was missing in the draft electoral rolls published by the EC as part of the special intensive revision in Bihar, ahead of the assembly polls.
At a press conference, Yadav, a former deputy chief minister, connected his phone to a big screen and tried to search his own EPIC number, which threw up the result 'no records found'.
The RJD leader claimed he was not provided with any receipt by the booth-level officer who came to his house with an enumeration form.
Hitting back, the poll authority said pure electoral rolls are the foundation of any democracy.
Under the special intensive revision, the period of claims and objections is for a full month, from August 1 to September 1.
'He should ask the 47,506 booth-level agents of his party to file claims and objections if they find that the name of any eligible is left out or if the name of any ineligible voter has been included,' the EC said.
It pointed out that no booth-level agent (BLA) of any political party, including the RJD, has submitted a single case to the booth-level officers for inclusion or deletion during the past 24 hours.
'All BLAs have agreed to go through the booth-wise draft lists given to them on August 1 carefully. The EC is not able to understand why he is continuing to make baseless allegations that his name is not there,' the EC said. PTI NAB RHL

MNS workers vandalise dance bar in Navi Mumbai: ‘Will not allow…'

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists stormed in and vandalised a local dance bar in Navi Mumbai, saying that such establishments have no place in the holy land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. a group of workers from the MNS entered the building, smashed furniture, and broke bottles of liquor, the police said.(PTI) "Dance bars have no place in the sacred land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We will not allow such obscenity to thrive in Panvel or anywhere else in the state," an MNS functionary said on the condition of anonymity. The police said that the attack occurred at Night Riders Bar, on the outskirts of Mumbai's Panvel, where a group of workers from the MNS entered the building, smashed furniture, broke bottles of liquor, and left the place in shambles, PTI reported. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. It shows shattered glass, broken tables, and ransacked interiors. The incident echoes the MNS party's longstanding cultural and ethical position, presenting itself as an upholder of Maharashtrian values and tradition. Police have launched an investigation into the incident. "We have taken cognisance and begun a probe. "We are gathering the CCTV footage and recording the statements of witnesses. Nobody is above the law," the official said to reporters. But no arrests have yet been made in the case. While the bar's owners have yet to issue a public statement, sources say the establishment suffered significant financial damage.

ECI abusing its powers, must be fought politically, legally: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Amid the raging row over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday alleged that the Election Commission is trying to change the electoral character and patterns of states, and asserted that this 'abuse of powers" must be fought politically and legally. The former home minister said the Bihar voter revision exercise is getting curiouser and curiouser. While 65 lakh voters are in danger of being disenfranchised in Bihar, reports of 'adding' 6.5 lakh persons as voters in Tamil Nadu is alarming and patently illegal, Chidambaram said in a post on X. 'Calling them 'permanently migrated' is an insult to the migrant workers and a gross interference in the right of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of its choice," the Rajya Sabha MP said. Why should the migrant worker not return to Bihar or his/her home state to vote in the State Assembly election, as they usually do, Chidambaram asked. 'Does not the migrant worker return to Bihar at the time of the Chhath puja festival?" he said. 'A person to be enrolled as a voter must have a fixed and permanent legal home. The migrant worker has such a home in Bihar (or another state). How can he/she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?" Chidambaram said. If the migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and lives in Bihar, how can the migrant worker be considered as 'permanently migrated" to Tamil Nadu, he further asked. 'The ECI is abusing its powers and trying to change the electoral character and patterns of States. This abuse of powers must be fought politically and legally," Chidambaram said. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at 'disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses of Parliament. PTI ASK DV DV view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
