Varanasi: Led by Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
, scores of
BJP
workers accorded a warm welcome to union home minister
Amit Shah
in Varanasi on Monday.
Shah is in the city to attend the Central Zonal Council meet on Tuesday.
Jubilant BJP supporters gathered along the road from the airport to the Varanasi highway to welcome the home minister.
When the fleet of Shah started progressing towards the highway from the airport, the leaders and workers from Pindra, Sevapuri, and Rohaniya assembly areas, who represent five rural assembly constituencies of the district, showered rose petals amidst chanting of slogans like Har Har Mahadev.
BJP leaders and supporters had gathered on both sides of the roads at Gilat Bazar and showered flower petals to welcome Shah.
When Shah's fleet reached Lahurabir, the party workers, especially from the City South assembly, started blowing conch shells and playing damrus amidst flower petal showering. This scene continued till Shah's fleet reached the Kaal Bhairav temple after crossing the Maidagin area. Shah and Yogi kept greeting the people and party supporters by joining or waving hands.
During his stay at the Kaal Bhairav temple, Shah performed Aarti of the deity and sought blessings.
Kashi region unit president Dilip Singh Patel said that party workers expressed gratitude to Shah for giving the honour to the city for hosting the CZC meet. After the G20 meeting, getting the opportunity to host the CZC meet is a matter of pride for the city as it is the first meeting of the zonal council, which is being organised in any non-state capital city, said the BJP leader.
From the Kaal Bhairav temple, Shah reached Hotel Taj to host dinner for Tuesday's CZC meet participants, including Yogi, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, and Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, who had already arrived before Shah reached Varanasi.
Two ministers from each state and around 100 senior officers from different ministries and departments, who will take part in the proposed meeting, also attended the dinner.
In view of the stay and movement of VIPs, three-layered security arrangements were ensured by police officials by deploying around 5,000 police and paramilitary personnel.
Additional forces had already arrived by Sunday evening and, following detailed briefing, they were deployed for security exercises, crowd control, and ensuring strict implementation of traffic diversions planned on the routes of movement of VIPs.

Odisha's public universities, colleges asked to observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to mark 50th year of Emergency

The Odisha government has asked all public universities and colleges in the state to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25 to mark the 50th year of the imposition of Emergency. The higher education department, in a letter to the universities and colleges, asked for the organisation of an awareness march involving students and faculty members with placards and slogans promoting constitutional values. They were also asked to conduct debates, workshops and lectures on the imposition of Emergency, and the importance of constitutional rights and duties. The department's letter said the imposition of the Emergency from June 25, 1975, stands as a stark reminder of the darkest period in India's democratic history. This day has been notified as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by a Union Ministry of Home Affairs notification dated July 11, 2024, the letter pointed out. 'Emergency witnessed a sweeping suspension of civil liberties, erosion of constitutional safeguards and unprecedented centralisation of executive power. Fundamental rights were breached, the press silenced under strict censorship, (and) thousands of political leaders, journalists and civil society members were imprisoned,' the letter read. It said observing the 50th year of the Emergency was required for 'deep reflection and renewed commitment to democratic values and constitutional morality'. Universities and colleges have also been asked to organise seminars on the Preamble of the Constitution, hold panel discussions, organise various competitions, documentary screenings and street plays. The institutions have been further told to record attendance at these events and to submit records. The BJP government in Odisha has also made elaborate arrangements to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' at a state-level event. Earlier, the BJP government in the state announced a monthly pension of Rs 20,000 for those imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Medha Kulkarni demands Pune railway station be named after Thorle Bajirao; NCP (SP) objects

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni on Monday demanded that Pune Railway Station be renamed Thorle Bajirao Peshwa Pune Railway Station, invoking the legacy of the Maratha general. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa. (HT) The demand, raised during a meeting convened by the Pune Railway Division to discuss issues concerning the Pune and Solapur regions, was met with objection from Nationalist Congress Party (SP) spokesperson and former mayor Ankush Kakade. 'We are not in favour of changing the name of Pune Railway Station, which has a long history. If the central government insists on renaming, they should also consider names like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule or Gopal Krishna Gokhale, along with Bajirao Peshwa,' Kakade said. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa and said the Prime Minister and the central government favour reflecting local history through public spaces such as railway stations. 'There is no representation of Pune's rich history at the station. I demand that it be renamed after Thorle Bajirao Peshwa,' she said. The meeting was also attended by MPs Amol Kolhe and Nilesh Lanke. Kulkarni has recently taken up several issues tied to cultural and religious sensitivities. During Hanuman Jayanti, she visited a dargah and asked that the volume of loudspeakers be reduced, citing temple prayers nearby. She also wrote to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demanding that Sarasbaug be shut down after Bakri Eid, alleging that religious rituals and non-vegetarian food were involved on the premises. The PMC subsequently closed access to the garden. Her latest demand comes at a time when both the central and state governments have undertaken renaming exercises. The Maharashtra government recently changed the names of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and Ahmednagar to Ahilyanagar.

Court grants bail to two arrested in NEET fraud

MUMBAI: A special CBI court has granted bail to Sandeep Shah and Salim Patel, who were arrested by the agency earlier this month for allegedly taking money from medical aspirants by promising admission. The court observed that nothing has been brought on record against the accused to show that they will not be available for trial. (Shutterstock) As per the CBI, the duo along with others allegedly promised to influence the officials of National Testing Agency (NTA) to manipulate the score of NEET UG 2025 exams to ensure admission in government medical colleges. The agency alleged that Shah and Patel along with another person, Javed Patel, received ₹ 75 lakh and ₹ 32 lakh through hawala channel. The counsel, representing Shah and Patel, submitted that the investigation was completed and their custodial interrogation was not required. They said that the duo will not tamper with the prosecution evidence and will be available for trial. The CBI opposed the plea, submitting that Patel introduced Shah to two persons - Neeraj Kumar and Prem Ranjan from Bihar - as National Testing Agency (NTA) officers, who are yet to be intercepted. The two accused were arrested after police officers, pretending to be parents of medical aspirants, called up Shah, who allegedly demanded 90 lakh per candidate to be paid to NTA officials for manipulating the NEET marks. The court, however, said that 'there is no specific reference of ₹ 90 lakh per candidate or settlement of ₹ 87.5 lakh in the transcript'. The special sessions judge, VP Desai, in an order passed on June 21, had observed that the investigating agency neither recovered any cash nor any Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets from the men during police custody. The court said, 'Even today, the investigating officer has nothing concrete to show that till what period the other accused will be arrested. Merely because the other accused persons are yet to be arrested cannot be a ground for rejection of the bail.' The court further said that the punishment prescribed under the prevention of corruption act is not less than three years, adding that 'discretion in the nature of bail can be exercised in favour of the applicant on certain terms and conditions'.
