Rangers 'join race' to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein

The National06-08-2025
It's no secret that Rangers are looking to strengthen that area of the squad, with Russell Martin keen to recruit competition for both Jack Butland and Liam Kelly.
Hein, 23, spent last season out on loan in Spain with Real Valladolid.
The highly-rated Arsenal keeper was unable to help prevent the side from La Liga relegation.
He already has 39 caps for Estonia after establishing himself as No.1 for his country.
Rangers were linked with a move for Brighton's Carl Rushworth earlier in the window.
However, that move quickly quietened down, with the keeper bound for a loan at Swansea City instead.
Now, Fussball Transfers reporter Dominik Schneider claims Rangers are interested in Hein.
It's said that Sevilla are also keen on the youngster.
Schneider wrote: "Rangers have joined the race for Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein (23), who spent last season on loan at #RealValladolid. #SevillaFC are also in the mix."
Hein is said to be in favour of another loan move away from Arsenal after they signed Kepa Arrizabalaga as back-up to David Raya.

Wrexham immediately 'target' ex-Arsenal star loved by Steven Gerrard after £10m transfer

Wrexham are said to be considering a move for former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, who was highly praised during his time at Aston Villa by then-manager Steven Gerrard Wrexham have turned their attentions to making a swoop for a former Arsenal star who's loved by Steven Gerrard after completing a £10million move for Nathan Broadhead. The Hollywood-backed club broke their transfer record for the third time this summer after signing the Ipswich Town forward on Thursday. ‌ No sooner had the ink dried on that deal than reports emerged that Wrexham are now eyeing former Gunners centre-back Calum Chambers as their next recruit. Despite already bringing in nine new faces, manager Phil Parkinson is understood to be eager to land at least one additional defender before the transfer window shuts. ‌ Chambers started his career at Southampton as a youngster before moving to Arsenal in the summer of 2014. The 30-year-old made 122 appearances for the Premier League side, then left to sign for Aston Villa in January 2022. ‌ He currently plays for Cardiff City in League One and, according to talkSPORT, has attracted the attention of Championship new boys Wrexham. Chambers only signed for the Bluebirds last year but suffered relegation during his first campaign. Despite having two years left on his contract and starting Cardiff's first two games of the season, he is also understood to be of interest to Wrexham's second-tier rivals, Sheffield United. Chambers' adaptability is said to make him an attractive prospect to Parkinson, with the seasoned defender able to slot into various roles, including in a three-man backline. During his time at Villa Park, he earned praise from the club's then-manager Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend hailed Chambers' qualities after he rounded off a 3-0 league win against Leeds United in March 2022 with a stunning goal. "He's been class, on and off the pitch," Gerrard said. "He's been a real pleasure to work with. I thought that was the knockout blow tonight, to get the third goal in the way that we did it. "That was the knockout blow and from that moment it was about keeping a clean sheet and everyone defensively getting their buzz out of it as well because everyone's responsible for scoring goals and everyone's got to be responsible for keeping the ball out as well." ‌ Chambers, who was recently handed the captain's armband at Cardiff, was quizzed last week about the setback of dropping down a division in his debut season. While news of Wrexham's interest had yet to emerge, he maintained his commitment to his current club at the time. "I'm happy to be here," he said. "You can't predict what's gonna happen in football. You've just got to enjoy the journey and that's what I'm doing. The manager's been amazing since he's come in. ‌ "Pre-season has gone really well. Everyone is buzzing, the boys are really excited, with the style and the identity we have now, I think it works amazingly with the group and the players that we have. "I feel there's a real identity about us and and a path going forward in the way we want to play. The vibe around the place is really good." Sign up to our newsletter! Ruben Amorim reveals alternative if Man Utd don't sign Carlos Baleba

Ruben Amorim has named Mason Mount as an option in central midfield if Manchester United fail to strengthen in the middle of the park. United have rebuilt their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arriving at Old Trafford this summer, along with young talent Diego Leon at left-back. But issues remain unresolved in midfield – an area of the pitch that caused United major problems last season. Questions remain over Casemiro's ability to withstand the pace of the Premier League after another draining campaign last term while Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have seldom shown promise as a midfield duo. Toby Collyer has been given the green light to join West Brom on loan with Bruno Fernandes expected to get more games in a deeper role. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. United are eager to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton but could be priced out of a move this summer. The Seagulls value the 21-year-old at £100million and while the midfielder is thought to be keen on the move, any deal may have to wait until this time next year. While Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand has been linked, there does not appear to a genuine alternative to Baleba in mind. In any case, Amorim is prepared to make do with what he has at his disposal – viewing Mount as another option. 'I'm really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday. 'Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different. 'But then we are going to find out during the season. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.' More Trending Mount has largely operated in an attacking midfield role for Chelsea, England and United. Amorim is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old who has endured an injury-hit spell in Manchester since arriving from Stamford Bridge in 2024. Mount picked up a hamstring injury early on in Amorim's tenue last year but returned late in the campaign, scoring twice in the Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Club. Rangers boss Russell Martin: 'We're turning a tanker around'

Rangers head coach Russell Martin has faith that his work with the team will take them in the right direction after a slow start in the Premiership, but says the job is like 'turning a tanker'. Martin guided his side into the Champions League play-offs this week with victory over Viktoria Plzen over two legs, setting up a tie with Club Brugge that could see Rangers book a place in the elite competition. However, Premiership draws with Motherwell and Dundee have meant a poor start to the domestic season, with both team and manager coming in for heavy criticism. Martin accepts that the job comes with intense scrutiny but is calm and confident that things will improve and deliver the success he wants. But he said a conversation with a member of staff had helped illustrate the scale of the task he believes he has taken on at Ibrox. 'I think there's been an energy around this place for a while that isn't, I'm talking inside, outside, it's just been a lot of disappointment and a lot of frustration and a lot of criticism to the players, to the club,' the head coach said 'Everyone has an opinion; everyone's entitled to one. So whilst I'm here, whilst we are here, our job is to really focus on what we can affect and what we can impact. 'If we do our jobs to the best of our ability in here and focus on the work and being better and having really, really high standards that this club should stand for, then I just don't see how it doesn't go in the right direction. 'One of the maintenance guys here this week said, 'We're turning a tanker around, gaffer, and it will just take some time, but when we get it going…' and I thought it was a perfect analogy. 'He's a great guy. He was here when I was here before. I don't want to embarrass him, but honestly, when he said that, I was like, 'No, you're right.' 'We just qualified for the Champions League [play-off]. 'I spoke to the staff on Sunday after Dundee because everyone here supports the club and they really feel things. 'But our job in here is to try and just work and not let the outside noise affect how we work. It just can't.' Martin instead wants to focus on the process of bedding in the new-look squad and getting everyone to understand and execute his vision for the team's style. 'I think [we need to be] be really consistent in the process here,' he said. 'We need to be really consistent in our behavior, be really consistent in what we're asking them to do. 'And then that consistency will show up on the pitch. I've been in this situation at every club we've been at. 'This is why I can sit here calmly and tell you what I think is going to happen next. 'We just have to trust the work and trust each other. And I've spoken to the players relentlessly about that. 'And I can see what's coming with them, how they're growing into the culture we're trying to build, how they're adapting to it, and that's why I'm excited about what's going to come.' After the pressures of Europe, Martin now turns his attention to domestic cup competition, with the Premier Sports Cup tie against Alloa on Saturday. He had a positive update on the injury front, with reassuring news about Cyriel Dessers and a return for other players. 'Cyriel is not as bad as everyone feared,' he said. 'Tomorrow will be too early, but we're really hopeful he can be involved on Tuesday. 'I think everyone feared the worst with the way he went off. 'There was a small issue, but it's nowhere near as big as it could have been, so it was good. A bit stiff and a bit sore still, but we will work hard to give him every chance to be fit for Tuesday.' Max Aarons will return to the squad after injury, while Thelo Aasgard and Hamza Igamane are in contention to play after a spell on the sidelines. New signing Mikey Moore, who joined on loan from Spurs, is also available, giving Martin some big selection decisions. 'It is a nice position to be in,' he said. 'We'll see how many minutes they'll get on the pitch, but they'll all be back involved.'
