DAP to install giant flag in Kepala Batas shop, offers 831 more, after Jalur Gemilang row
KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 12): DAP today said it will sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang to be installed at a shop in Kepala Batas this evening, following controversy over the national flag being displayed upside-down at the premises.'
In a statement, the party said its Penang members will also distribute 831 Jalur Gemilang flags for free if any party attempts to disturb the peace at the location, describing the gesture as a show of unity ahead of National Day on Aug 31.
'Threats by certain parties to stage a protest in front of the shop if no charges are brought are blatant bullying and unacceptable, particularly as the shopkeeper is a senior citizen,' DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said.
'To deal with such immature parties, we must show higher rationality and act in a peaceful and courteous manner,' he added.
The incident began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was found hanging upside-down outside his premises.
Umno Youth chief Dr Mohd Akmal Saleh had announced plans to stage a protest at the shop, but the gathering did not proceed after police were stationed in the area and advised against it.

GEORGE TOWN: Police have warned against a planned gathering by Umno Youth scheduled for Thursday (Aug 14) in Bertam, Kepala Batas. Citing concerns over public safety and order, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail urged the public to steer clear of the gathering, which arose from the upside-down Jalur Gemilang controversy. The scheduled protest, believed to be organised by Umno, has instead been moved to the Kepala Batas night market site located about 2km from the hardware shop. Akmal has been vocal against improper displays of the Jalur Gemilang and said he wanted to visit the shop owner to "teach" him how to display it properly.

Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said this was to ensure public peace and the safety of the local community. 'We urge all parties to wait for the decision of the deputy public prosecutor's office (on the case) and not to commit any action that can raise tensions. 'Police will take stern action against any party that breaches the law or commits a breach in peace according to the relevant laws,' he said in a statement. Azizee said 38 police reports had been lodged across the country over the incident, and the investigation paper was submitted to prosecutors on Aug 11. Negeri Sembilan mandates Jalur Gemilang display for civil servants
SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan government has made it compulsory for department heads and civil servants to fly the Jalur Gemilang and state flag at their residences until Sept 16. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun stated that department heads, including those residing outside the state, must display both flags at their homes. He added that other civil servants are required to fly at least the Jalur Gemilang. The State Secretary's Office issued a circular on the matter two days ago to nearly 7,000 state civil servants in conjunction with this year's National Day celebrations. Aminuddin said this initiative aims to foster patriotism during the National Month. He spoke to reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Negeri. Meanwhile, Aminuddin urged local governments to adopt more creative ways of displaying the flags to enliven the celebrations. 'Don't just hang them or place them on poles. That's how it was 10 or 20 years ago... let's change the approach to create a livelier atmosphere,' he said.
