Stay clear of Jalur Gemilang gathering, cops urge public
PETALING JAYA : Police have urged the public to stay clear of any Umno Youth gathering outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Penang, related to the upside-down Jalur Gemilang issue.
Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said this was to ensure public peace and the safety of the local community.
'We urge all parties to wait for the decision of the deputy public prosecutor's office (on the case) and not to commit any action that can raise tensions.
'Police will take stern action against any party that breaches the law or commits a breach in peace according to the relevant laws,' he said in a statement.
Azizee said 38 police reports had been lodged across the country over the incident, and the investigation paper was submitted to prosecutors on Aug 11.
DAP had sponsored a giant Jalur Gemilang for the hardware shop after the owner was accused of hoisting the national flag upside down.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had said that he and other leaders would turn up outside the hardware store tomorrow to see if DAP had hung its promised flag correctly.
Bersatu Youth has also said it would join its Umno counterpart tomorrow.
Akmal previously threatened to protest at the shop if the owner was not charged by Thursday, saying he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to put up a flag properly'.
Civil society group Projek Sama subsequently urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene and rein in Akmal, to stop the Umno man's 'witch-hunt', especially if the shop owner was not charged over the issue.
Terengganu Umno Youth also apologised for an error in a graphic of the Jalur Gemilang posted on the wing's social media account, saying it was an unintentional mistake by the graphic designer.
Akmal, however, urged the police to act, even though the person involved was from his own party.

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has instructed the party's Youth wing to lodge police reports nationwide against Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over a demonstration he led outside a shop in Kepala Batas yesterday. In a statement, Loke said the march amounted to "bullying and intimidation" against the shop owner, who had displayed the national flag incorrectly in a viral video. He said Akmal's actions disregarded warnings from the Inspector-General of Police and the Penang police chief against holding public gatherings. "Akmal's disregard for police warnings is an act that challenges the rule of law and disrupts public order, causing anxiety among traders in the surrounding area to the extent that they had to close their businesses earlier than usual. "Such actions go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of Malaysia's multi-ethnic society, and appropriate punishment must be imposed for such extreme behaviour," he said. Loke had since instructed the DAP Youth wing to file reports under several sections of the Penal Code, including Section 503 for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements that are conducive to public mischief. Additionally, other reports will also be made under two new sections related to bullying, including Section 507B for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such feelings. Loke stressed that although the Jalur Gemilang must be flown correctly and with respect, acts of intimidation and creating tension were not the way to resolve the matter. It was reported yesterday that Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4 km march to protest against a hardware store that had displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Shafie: Warisan still Sabah-centric despite Peninsular expansion, will contest state polls solo
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has reportedly insisted that Parti Warisan remains a Sabah-centric party, dismissing claims it lost that identity when it expanded to Peninsular Malaysia. The Warisan president said the party has consistently fought for Sabah's interests and will continue to share its vision for Sabahans in the upcoming state election. 'It's meaningless to be known as a local party by name but our voice is not [outspoken on] local [issues]. Warisan is a local party,' he was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today. 'When Warisan contested in the peninsula, some parties there accused us of being disruptive. But when their parties contest in Sabah, it's not?' he asked, accusing certain West Malaysian parties of hypocrisy. Shafie said the party's expansion into the peninsula aimed to raise awareness among Malaysians about the capabilities of Sabah parties, noting that others like Parti Bersatu Sabah and Upko had done the same. He also insisted that the party will contest the state election alone, without any alliance with Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, or Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. Shafied added that going solo is part of Warisan's plan to show it can form the next Sabah government independently, as Berjaya and PBS did in the past. 'If Berjaya and PBS could do it, why not Warisan?' he said, citing the administrations led by Tan Sri Harris Salleh and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan. Shafie was responding to former Warisan women's chief Datuk Norazlinah Arif, who accused the party of losing its local identity. Norazlinah had argued that Warisan's move into Peninsular Malaysia, including fielding candidates in the 15th general election (GE15), showed it was shifting away from prioritising Sabah and positioning Shafie for the prime minister's post. In December 2020, Shafie announced that the party had unanimously decided to spread its wings to the Peninsula, starting with branches and divisions in Johor and Selangor, where there are high concentrations of Sabahans. Subsequently, it contested in six seats in the Johor state election in 2022, and fielded more candidates in 24 federal and 16 state seats in Peninsular Malaysia for GE15.
