Loke instructs party's Youth wing to lodge reports against Akmal
In a statement, Loke said the march amounted to "bullying and intimidation" against the shop owner, who had displayed the national flag incorrectly in a viral video.
He said Akmal's actions disregarded warnings from the Inspector-General of Police and the Penang police chief against holding public gatherings.
"Akmal's disregard for police warnings is an act that challenges the rule of law and disrupts public order, causing anxiety among traders in the surrounding area to the extent that they had to close their businesses earlier than usual.
"Such actions go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of Malaysia's multi-ethnic society, and appropriate punishment must be imposed for such extreme behaviour," he said.
Loke had since instructed the DAP Youth wing to file reports under several sections of the Penal Code, including Section 503 for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements that are conducive to public mischief.
Additionally, other reports will also be made under two new sections related to bullying, including Section 507B for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such feelings.
Loke stressed that although the Jalur Gemilang must be flown correctly and with respect, acts of intimidation and creating tension were not the way to resolve the matter.
It was reported yesterday that Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4 km march to protest against a hardware store that had displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Police probe upside-down Johor flag at Segamat hotel
SEGAMAT: Police have launched an investigation into a social media post showing the Johor state flag flown upside down at a hotel in the Taman Yayasan Commercial Centre here. Segamat OCPD Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said a report was lodged on Sunday (Aug 17), with initial checks revealing the flag had been put up by two hotel employees in conjunction with the Merdeka month. "One of them, a foreign worker, had mistakenly hoisted the flag upside down. He corrected it immediately after being alerted by his colleague," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 18), adding the worker holds valid documents, including a passport and work permit. The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Investigation papers will be referred to the state prosecution office, he said. – Bernama

Beware those who sow communal hate, says Anwar
SEPANG: Young people should reject moves to sow communal hate, such as the recent public protest against a hardware shop at the centre of a Jalur Gemilang controversy, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'Youths have to beware. This is the month to celebrate National Day, but the Jalur Gemilang became a political issue,' the Prime Minister said on Monday (Aug 18). 'For extremists, anything can be exploited as an issue,' Anwar told students of Multimedia University in a dialogue session in Cyberjaya. The uproar over an upside-down Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang, could have been handled differently instead of being blown out of proportion, Anwar said. 'If the person mistakenly put it up, we should correct him. If he did it out of ill will, we can take legal action. But we do not take the law into our own hands. We are a nation of laws.' Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh has been criticised for leading a protest last week against the hardware shop after a video was shared of its owner holding a flag pole with an upside-down Jalur Gemilang. The owner later explained that he had been using a pole to measure its height and did not even realise that the flag had been tied upside down. He later corrected the mistake. But his apology did not satisfy Akmal and a group of Umno Youth members who proceeded to hold the protest in front of the shop to purportedly 'teach the man how to put up the national flag correctly'. Police announced that they are investigating both the hardware shop owner and Akmal. In his speech to students, Anwar warned that fanning communal hate would only destabilise the nation. 'We need political stability. There are no countries in the world that are safe when racism and hate are widespread. But people who fan such sentiments don't realise that a country can be torn apart by inter-communal misunderstandings'.

Police probe upside-down Johor flag incident at Segamat hotel
SEGAMAT: Police are investigating an incident in which the Johor state flag was displayed upside down at a hotel here, sparking public uproar on social media. District police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the incident was reported yesterday after a Facebook post showing the inverted flag at a hotel along Jalan Syed Abdul Kadir went viral. Checks revealed the flag had been put up for the National month celebrations but was mistakenly hung upside down by a foreign worker. The worker later corrected it after being alerted by a colleague. "The worker has valid travel documents and a work permit. Initial findings indicate there was no malicious intent," Ahmad Zamry said in a statement today. Police have opened investigations under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for indecent behaviour, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities. The case will be referred to the state prosecution office once investigations are complete.
