Social Welfare Minister orders inquiry into TIDCO housing irregularities in Visakhapatnam

The Hindu25-04-2025
Minister for Social Welfare Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy has ordered for constitution of a special committee to conduct an inquiry into the alleged irregularities reported in the TIDCO houses. He made the decision after a number of public elected representatives from the district raised concerns about the irregularities in the construction, sanctioning and registration process of TIDCO houses. They have also pointed out irregularities in preparing the beneficiary lists.
The discussions were held during the District Review Committee (DRC) meeting held at the Collectorate here on Friday.
During the meeting, the Minister said that the officials should cooperate as per government regulations with individuals constructing houses on their own land. He also directed them to take up awareness campaigns and said that those building houses on plots under 100 square yards should not face any obstacles regarding self-certification.
Mr. Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy said that Visakhapatnam has the highest revenue-generating potential in the country, and it offers immense opportunities for development. He said that the efforts should be directed towards long-term solutions and delivering quality services to the public. He said that the government introduced G.O. No. 30 for the regularisation of encroachments in a way that benefits the poor, and stressed the need to further explain its importance and benefits to the public.
Summer action plan
As part of the summer action plan, he said that steps should be taken to provide drinking water to people across the district. He instructed officials to make additional water tanks available, keeping in view the summer conditions.
Defunct streetlights
The Minister called for speedy completion of masterplan roads and other projects within the VMRDA limits. He also reviewed the maintenance of the local reservoirs. When public representatives complained about the defunct streetlights in various parts of the city, the Minister immediately directed officials to conduct an audit and ensure that streetlights are installed wherever necessary.
Visakhapatnam West MLA P.G.V.R. Naidu alias Ganababu raised several key issues, including TIDCO housing construction. He also complained about number of ganja-related groups and urged for immediate action. He also called for the construction of an underpass at Kakaninagar. Responding to this, the VMRDA Commissioner K.S. Viswanathan said works will begin soon.
Pendhurthi MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu expressed concern over the delay in the development works of the Vepagunta–Pinagadi road, stating that the work has been pending for the past eight months. He said that the project should be taken up on a fast-track basis. In response, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad clarified that the issue has already been brought to the attention of the government and that road construction will soon commence with the assistance from the New Development Bank (NDB).
Zones to be reorganised
During the meeting, Mr. Harendhira Prasad informed the Ministers and other public representatives that the zones within the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits will be reorganised for administrative convenience. He explained that the current zones will be restructured in alignment with the respective Assembly constituencies. He said that steps are being taken to ensure that each constituency will be in one zone. The public representatives responded positively to the proposals.
MP M. Sribharat, Andhra Pradesh TDP president Palla Srinivasa Rao, MLAs Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, Vamsikrishna Srinivas, MLCs Botcha Satyanarayana and Varudu Kalyani, and others were present.

China's Xinjiang-Tibet railway line all set to Chug Along

Synopsis China is preparing to build the Xinjiang-Tibet railway near Ladakh. This project will run close to the Line of Actual Control. The railway company will handle construction and tourism. This plan has been in development for many years. It is one of China's major projects. India and China are currently in talks to ease border tensions. China's Xinjiang-Tibet railway line all set to Chug Along (representative image) After decades of feasibility work, China is set to start construction on the strategic Xinjiang-Tibet railway line - along India's northern borders in Ladakh - with the establishment of a dedicated entity for the purpose, Xinjiang Tibet Railway Co. Ltd, over the past week. The planned link is likely to cross the Aksai Chin and run close to the G219 highway, not far from the Line of Actual Control. Border infrastructure has been a point of serious concern, leading to standoff and skirmishes. This comes at a time when India and China are in talks to de-escalate tensions along LAC. More talks are slated in the runup to the SCO summit later this month. The new company's mandates are construction, manufacturing of railway transportation equipment, real estate development and operations, besides developing tourist facilities. Just like the mega dam on the upper reaches of Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo), for which a state-owned enterprise China Yajiang Group was floated and where construction started last month, the Xinjiang Tibet Railway Co Ltd will be wholly owned by China State Railway Group Ltd. The company has been set up with registered capital of 95 billion yuan (nearly $13.2b) and one Ma Yinjun as its legal representative, in filings reported from China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity system. Plan in the works The railway plan has been in the works for nearly two decades. It was first mentioned in 2006-08 around the time the first rail line to Lhasa was operationalised. The link was to be part of a network connecting Lhasa to the Chinese mainland, Yunnan and Chengdu to the East and Xinjiang in the West. But the Xinjiang link has been on paper for a while largely due to the extensive feasibility studies needed for the project, which will traverse through very harsh terrain, sub-zero and permafrost conditions. In 2018, a section of the Xinjiang-Tibet Railway was included in the 2021-30 Railway Network Development Plan for Tibet Autonomous Region.'One of 45 major projects'In May 2022, a tender was awarded for the Hotan-Shigatse railway survey and design project by China State Railway Group. In April 2025, the Chinese transport ministry in a press conference identified the Xinjiang-Tibet railway line as one of the 45 major projects, where construction was to be started within the year. Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) inaugurated several projects and laid foundation stones for new ones worth Rs 21 crore in Bheemili assembly constituency on Sunday. VMRDA chairman MV Pranav Gopal, Bheemili MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, VMRDA metropolitan commissioner KS Viswanathan, participated in the programme. After inaugurating a convention centre built at a cost of Rs 9.50 crore, they laid foundation stones for various major road development projects planned at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Speaking on the occasion, VMRDA chairman M V Pranav Gopal said that following the guidance and vision of chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, utmost priority is being given to providing basic infrastructure facilities in all constituencies within the VMRDA jurisdiction. He expressed happiness at the inauguration and foundation laying of projects worth approximately Rs 21 crore in the Bheemili constituency. Male nursing officers in Telangana demand equal promotion opportunities

The Telangana Nurses Joint Action Committee (TNJAC) has urged the State government to remove barriers preventing male nursing officers from securing promotions, calling the existing rules discriminatory and in violation of constitutional provisions ensuring equality. In a statement issued on Sunday (August 10), the committee said that while male candidates were permitted to enrol in government nursing colleges nearly two decades ago, they continue to face career stagnation due to outdated government orders. The issue dates back to 2005, when the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy convinced the Indian Nursing Council to allow men into nursing courses, leading to the issuance of G.O. No. 82 on May 8, 2005. A year later, under G.O. No. 320, nursing schools were upgraded to colleges, paving the way for male admissions in all government nursing institutions. Since 2011, around 1,000 to 1,200 male nurses have been serving in government posts. The TNJAC pointed out that in 2024, no male candidates were included in the seniority list for lecturer promotions, forcing some to seek judicial intervention. The neighbouring State of Andhra Pradesh has already acted on this directive. Through G.O. No. 47, issued on March 14, 2024, the State amended its Nursing Service Rules by replacing the phrase 'only women' with 'men and women', ensuring that male candidates could also benefit from promotions. The TNJAC has appealed to the Telangana government to follow suit to align with constitutional provisions.
