Dive Brief:
SpartanNash announced Monday it has hired Jason Ulichnie as vice president of OwnBrands Marketing.
Ulichnie will oversee the end-to-end portfolio management, product development and brand equity of SpartanNash's private brands. He will also manage product innovation, pricing and promotions, and forecasting and sourcing.
Ulichnie brings around 20 years of retail and restaurant experience to SpartanNash as the grocery company prepares for C&S Wholesale Grocers to acquire it.
Dive Insight:
Ulichnie arrives at a time when SpartanNash is making progress on ramping up its private brands.
Ulichnie's prior private brand experience includes top roles at Walmart, Schnuck Markets and Southeastern Grocers. He most recently served as vice president of own brands at Schnucks for six years and, before that, held the same role at Southeastern Grocers for nearly three years, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He also worked for a decade at Brinker International, the casual dining restaurant company that runs Chili's Grill & Bar and Maggiano's Little Italy, according to LinkedIn.
'As we continue to take our brand-building to the next level, Jason will be an important addition to our Marketing leadership team,' SpartanNash Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Erin Storm said in a statement. 'His knowledge in leading category transformation to drive profitable growth and culinary innovation will benefit our independent retail customers as well as our [retail banner] shoppers.'
SpartanNash's private band portfolio includes Our Family, Fresh and Finest by Our Family, and Finest Reserve by Our Family. SpartanNash launched Finest Reserve in early 2024 with a selection of pastas, sauces and dressings.
The company's private brand penetration was above 27% at the end of the fourth quarter, CFO Jason Monaco told investors in February.
SpartanNash operates nearly 200 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, primarily under its Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market banners.
Ulichnie is part of a trio of new executives at SpartanNash. On Monday, the company also announced the hiring of a new CIO and chief information security officer for its newly formed finance, IT and strategy groups.
In early June, SpartanNash confirmed that it had reorganized its corporate structure and eliminated an unspecified number of roles. Later that month, C&S announced it would acquire SpartanNash in a $1.77 billion deal that is expected to close later this year.

SpartanNash's retail sales again lead its quarterly growth

This story was originally published on Grocery Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Grocery Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: SpartanNash's net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2025 rose by just under 2%, to about $2.3 billion, the grocery wholesaler and retailer reported Thursday. Retail sales rose by almost 13%, to $763 million, while wholesale sales were off by 3%, to $1.5 billion. SpartanNash's results represent its last earnings report before shareholders vote on the company's plan to sell itself to C&S Wholesale Grocers. Dive Insight: SpartanNash has seen growth in its retail division outpace its much larger wholesale unit for several quarters in a row, and that trend continued during Q2 as incremental revenue from stores the company recently added to its portfolio helped power that unit's growth. Wholesale sales accounted for about two-thirds of SpartanNash's sales during Q2, with the company's retail operations responsible for the rest. By contrast, the wholesale unit brought in just under 70% of the company's sales during the second quarter of fiscal 2024. Comparable store sales in SpartanNash's retail division were down during Q2 by about half a percentage point, which SpartanNash attributed to lower unit volumes. Comps were up by 1.6% during the first quarter. SpartanNash attributed the decline in its wholesale revenue in part to lower volumes in its national accounts channel and the elimination of intercompany sales to Fresh Encounter, a regional grocery store chain SpartanNash agreed to acquire in October 2024, the company said in its earnings statement. Higher sales to military customers partially offset the declines SpartanNash recorded in its wholesale business. SpartanNash recorded net earnings of $6.2 million during Q2, compared with $11.5 million during the same period a year ago. The company said the decline was due to costs associated with its pending sale to C&S, an organizational restructuring that involved position eliminations, higher incentive compensation and other costs. SpartanNash did not hold an earnings call to discuss its latest results because of the deal with C&S. Shareholders are set to vote Sept. 9 on whether to approve the $1.77 billion transaction. SpartanNash hires CIO, information security chief as it preps for merger

This story was originally published on Grocery Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Grocery Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: SpartanNash said Monday that it has brought on a pair of executives to serve in leadership roles in a newly formed division that encompasses the grocery company's finance, information technology and strategy groups. Ed Rybicki has assumed the role of senior vice president and chief information officer for the grocery distributor and retailer, while Brett Hoffman has become vice president and chief information security officer. The appointments follow SpartanNash's announcement in June that it has agreed to be acquired by C&S Wholesale Grocers in a $1.77 billion-dollar transaction due to be completed later this year. Dive Insight: SpartanNash said the company's decision to hire Rybicki and Hoffman reflects its strategy of depending on technology to improve its ability to serve wholesale customers and consumers. Rybicki will direct SpartanNash's technology group and will focus on innovation, operational efficiency and the company's growth strategy. Hoffman, who will report to Rybicki, will lead SpartanNash's cybersecurity strategy in its retail, supply chain and corporate units. 'As a customer-focused, innovative food solutions company, our technology must simplify work for our Associates, create a seamless experience for our wholesale customers, and support a rich, omnichannel journey for our shoppers,' SpartanNash CFO Jason Monaco, who will oversee the unit both executives are part of, said in a statement. Rybicki served most recently as chief information and technology officer at Canadian food supplier Mastronardi Produce. He also held senior IT roles at companies including ventilator and respiratory diagnostics equipment maker Vyaire Medical,; food technology company Mérieux Nutrisciences; and auto parts supplier Delphi, according to SpartanNash. Hoffman formerly served as vice president of enterprise security solutions and chief information security officer for consulting firm Inspire Security Solutions. Earlier, he worked for furniture maker MillerKnoll, employee benefits provider HealthEquity, direct-selling company Amway and Corewell Health, a healthcare company based in Michigan, SpartanNash said. Rybicki and Hoffman are settling into their new roles as SpartanNash navigates a tumultuous period that included the departure of former Chief Strategy and Information Officer Masiar Tayebi, who left in April after four years with the grocery retailer and wholesaler. The company also disclosed in June that it had revamped its corporate structure and eliminated an unspecified number of positions. SpartanNash is revamping its IT operations at a time when cybersecurity has taken on a high profile in the grocery industry. In June, a cyberattack forced United Natural Foods, Inc. to temporarily take down its online systems, disrupting its ability to serve customers and costing UNFI hundreds of millions of dollars in sales. Last November, a cyberattack against Ahold Delhaize caused a multiday e-commerce platform outage at the Dutch supermarket operator's Hannaford banner and exposed personal data belonging to 2 million people, including current and former employees of the grocery company.
