Aldi opening over 225 new stores in 2025: See list of new locations already open

While many retailers have undergone mass closures recently, German discount grocery chain Aldi is looking to continue its growth in 2025. The chain announced in February its plan to open more than 225 new stores in 2025 as part of a five-year growth plan to add 800 stores by the end of 2028. According to the company, the 225 stores will be "the most stores Aldi will open in one year in its nearly 50-year U.S. history." In a news release in February, Aldi said the new stores will open through a "combination of organic growth and converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format." Altogether, Aldi will convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027. Aldi finalized its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, in March 2024. However, it announced in February 2025 its plan to sell approximately 170 unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores to a consortium that includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors. Aldi said in the February news release that grand openings for the first several converted Southeastern Grocers stores were underway, with about 100 converted locations re-opening as Aldi stores by the end of 2025. The chain said it opened nearly 120 stores in 2024, bringing its total store count to over 2,400, making it the third-largest grocery chain in the U.S. by store count. More news: Krispy Kreme giving away free doughnuts on May 7 for REAL ID deadline: How to get one In an emailed statement to USA TODAY Wednesday, an Aldi spokesperson said the company has already opened more than 40 stores this year, and "plans to open many more ahead of summer." Utah law clears the way for shoppers to include beer in grocery pickup orders

Buying beer from the grocery store in Utah just got easier as the state joins the growing trend of grocers and legislators finding ways to expand alcohol sales. Under the state's annual revisions to its liquor bill, grocery stores as well as other off-premise beer retailers can now "sell, offer for sale, or furnish beer" at drive-through windows and designated drive-up loading areas or parking stalls. On Monday, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed the bill into law. The updated bill, which takes effect May 7, will allow shoppers to include beer in their online pickup orders and have the alcohol brought out to their cars with their other grocery items. Under current law, shoppers are required to go into the store to purchase alcoholic beverages. Utah grocers should be aware, however, that to legally supply their parked shoppers with beer, the customer must purchase ahead of time and park in the "designated parking stall," per the bill. The change in Utah comes as states generally have relaxed alcohol laws in recent years to allow grocers to sell more types of alcoholic beverages. Like Utah, Pennsylvania also eased up on limitations on grocery alcohol sales. Last summer, the state's governor signed a law that amends Pennsylvania's Liquor Code to allow establishments like restaurants and grocery stores to sell ready-to-drink cocktails. Previously, only state-owned liquor and wine stores could sell canned cocktails in the state. In states that haven't updated their regulations recently, grocers have gotten creative. Hy-Vee, Southeastern Grocers, Food Lion, Fareway, Publix and ShopRite operate stand-alone liquor stores to work around state restrictions. Copyright 2025 Industry Dive. All rights reserved.
