Problem Solved
While many retailers have undergone mass closures recently, German discount grocery chain Aldi is looking to continue its growth in 2025.
The chain announced in February its plan to open more than 225 new stores in 2025 as part of a five-year growth plan to add 800 stores by the end of 2028. According to the company, the 225 stores will be "the most stores Aldi will open in one year in its nearly 50-year U.S. history."
In a news release in February, Aldi said the new stores will open through a "combination of organic growth and converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format." Altogether, Aldi will convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027.
Aldi finalized its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, in March 2024. However, it announced in February 2025 its plan to sell approximately 170 unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores to a consortium that includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors.
Aldi said in the February news release that grand openings for the first several converted Southeastern Grocers stores were underway, with about 100 converted locations re-opening as Aldi stores by the end of 2025.
The chain said it opened nearly 120 stores in 2024, bringing its total store count to over 2,400, making it the third-largest grocery chain in the U.S. by store count.

In February, Aldi said it would add to its "established footprint" in the Northeast and Midwest regions, in addition to growing its presence in the West with more stores in Southern California and Arizona.

N26 co-founder Valentin Stalf to step down
This story was originally published on Banking Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Banking Dive newsletter. N26 co-founder Valentin Stalf will step down as co-CEO and move to a role on the German digital bank's supervisory board after a transition period, the company announced Tuesday. That leaves Stalf's fellow co-founder, Max Tayenthal, as N26's sole CEO for the moment, though the digital bank's chair, Marcus Mosen, may be appointed interim co-CEO soon, the Financial Times reported last week. The executive shuffle comes as German financial watchdog BaFin last month proposed issuing a formal warning to two members of the bank's management board and appointing a special monitor after finding new risk management weaknesses, according to the Financial Times. The potential development arises little more than a year after BaFin lifted a cap it had put on N26's growth. The nearly three-year cap cost the digital bank billions in lost valuation, including a shutdown of its U.S. operations in 2021. Stalf's shift comes amid reports that he and Tayenthal may waive special voting rights that give them veto power over certain decisions. Stalf and Tayenthal together hold a roughly 20% stake in the company. U.K.-based fintech Wise, similarly, last month held its own referendum on investors who hold so-called 'golden share' supervoting powers. Stalf, in a statement Tuesday, called his move 'a forward-looking decision to continue to best utilize my many years of experience and knowledge to strengthen N26.' 'I will actively and passionately contribute to N26's long-term leadership and strategic direction and will remain one of the largest N26 shareholders,' he said. 'The new role also offers me the opportunity to devote more time to my family office and other entrepreneurial pursuits.' Stalf told the Financial Times he had been thinking about leaving the company's management 'for some time' and expedited the transition after rumors of his potential departure last week. He added he expects to join the supervisory board after roughly six months. Stalf further said he expected two more executives to join the management board 'over the coming six to 12 months' but declined to detail potential future management changes. A person familiar with discussions at N26 told the Financial Times that Tayenthal was likely to step down from his role at a later stage. The digital bank, however, said Tayenthal 'remains fully committed to his role.' Mosen, for his part, called Stalf 'a pioneer in mobile banking.' 'I have tremendous respect for his entrepreneurial vision and achievements,' Mosen said in a Tuesday release. 'Together with Max, he has turned N26 into an industry frontrunner and market-leading digital bank known across Europe. I look forward to continuing our cooperation." N26 broke even last summer, it said, adding it delivered 40% revenue growth in its past financial year and annual revenues now exceeding €500 million. The digital bank is preparing to introduce products for families, including a child's account, card and investment functionality; a new premium subscription with exclusive partners; and an all-new app design focused on holistic wealth management, it said. On the risk management front, the company's pending chief risk officer, Jochen Klöpper, is set to start in December. Planet Fitness to open new Pensacola gym in September, clearing way for Costco
Planet Fitness is moving across the street from their existing Ensley gym to open a club on East Nine Mile Road that will neighbor Aldi. Escambia County Building Services permitted Planet Fitness earlier in the year to create a new 19,315-square-foot facility with restrooms, showers, a "Black Card Spa" area and a check-in desk/reception area. Planet Fitness told the News Journal the gym is scheduled to open on Sept. 2, but that is still an estimated timeframe that could change. The Planet Fitness at 235 E. Nine Mile Road, which is still open, will likely close the week before the new gym opens. Costco is still eyeing a Pensacola entrance by replacing a building where Planet Fitness is the only business left standing. Costco plans to build a 172,580-square-foot store with a gas station in between Sam's Seafood & Grill and Wells Fargo bank, as well as a tire center and add improvements to the existing plaza's parking lot and entryways. Planet Fitness is under construction in leftover space after Winn-Dixie's conversion to Aldi, according to county documents. Costco's Pensacola entrance: Costco still has eyes on Pensacola with new plans for Nine Mile store submitted July 14 Some of the existing businesses in the plaza that aren't based inside that building will remain if the project is approved, including Dairy Queen, Sam's Seafood and Wells Fargo. An updated set of plans for the Costco proposal were submitted to Escambia County in July, but they haven't been scheduled for review by the Development Review Committee yet. If the proposal is approved, developers will tear down the existing building in the plaza before building the Costco store. Planet Fitness has 173 gyms open across Florida currently, with three locations in Pensacola. Planet Fitness gyms can be found at the following addresses in the Pensacola area. Their Davis Highway location is temporarily closed, however. Pensacola Planet Fitness– 6241 N. Davis Hwy Bellview Planet Fitness – 5975 Mobile Hwy Ensley Planet Fitness – 235 E.
