Aldi opening over 225 new stores in 2025: See list of new locations already open
The chain announced in February its plan to open more than 225 new stores in 2025 as part of a five-year growth plan to add 800 stores by the end of 2028. According to the company, the 225 stores will be "the most stores Aldi will open in one year in its nearly 50-year U.S. history."
In a news release in February, Aldi said the new stores will open through a "combination of organic growth and converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format." Altogether, Aldi will convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027.
Aldi finalized its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, in March 2024. However, it announced in February 2025 its plan to sell approximately 170 unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores to a consortium that includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors.
Aldi said in the February news release that grand openings for the first several converted Southeastern Grocers stores were underway, with about 100 converted locations re-opening as Aldi stores by the end of 2025.
The chain said it opened nearly 120 stores in 2024, bringing its total store count to over 2,400, making it the third-largest grocery chain in the U.S. by store count.

UK inflation picks up to hotter-than-expected 3.8% in July
The U.K.'s annual inflation rate hit a hotter-than-expected 3.8%in July, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters had anticipated inflation would reach 3.7% in the twelve months to July, after it picked up to 3.6% in June, exceeding forecasts. July core inflation, which excludes more volatile energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices, rose by an annual 3.8%, up from 3.7% in the twelve months to June. The latest data comes after the Bank of England earlier this month voted by a fine margin to cut interest rates from 4.25% to 4%, as the central bank resumed what it describes as a "gradual and careful" approach to monetary easing. While the BOE was widely expected to trim rates by 25 basis points at the time, traders and economists were keen to see the breakdown of support for the move. In the end, policymakers had to vote twice on the rate cut decision, and a majority of 5-4 opted to cut. BOE policy committee members have had to weigh up sticky inflation with a cooling jobs market and lackluster but slightly recovering growth. GDP data out last week showed a surprise 0.3% expansion in the second quarter. The BOE is watching inflation data closely, after forecasting the consumer price index will peak at 3.8% in September before retreating in the early half of 2026. In Deutsche Bank's estimates, Britain remains "a sliver away" from an annual inflation rate of 4%. "We expect price pressures to soften in the fourth quarter of 2025, however, tracking closer to 3.5% y-o-y [year-on-year] by year-end," Sanjay Raja, senior economist at the German lender, said in emailed comments Friday. "Moreover, we do expect price pressures to ease further next year. On our models, we have headline CPI slipping to just around 2.75% y-o-y in the second quarter of 2026, before landing closer to 2.25% y-o-y in the fourth quarter of 2026. Bigger picture, we think the road to achieving a 2% landing next year is narrowing. Indeed, we see more upside pressures building around our projections," he noted.

Surprise Aussie family-run grocer beats Coles, Woolworths and Aldi in supermarket awards: 'Fiercely competitive'
Fresh fruit and grocery chain Harris Farm has taken out four supermarket awards in a vote by thousands of Aussie shoppers. The high-end supermarket is known for charging steeper prices for fruit and vegetables, but that didn't stop it from coming out on top of the likes of Aldi, Coles and Woolworths in certain categories. More than 10,000 Aussie consumers ranked Australia's supermarkets in Finder's Customer Satisfaction Awards. Harris Farm was the big winner, voted the 'Most Loved', 'Most Recommended', 'Most Trusted' and 'Top Rated Supermarket Produce'. Aldi won the 'Top Value' award for the second year in a row, while Ritchies took out 'Legendary Service'. Woolworths picked up a gong for 'Top Rated Supermarket Rewards Program' for its Everyday Rewards offering, while Coles was the favourite for home convenience, winning 'Top Rated Grocery Delivery'. RELATED Aldi reveals 'small details' that make shop cheaper than Coles, Woolworths Centrelink alert for retiring Baby Boomers wanting to caravan around Australia Controversial $10 billion push to tax inheritance in Australia Finder head of consumer research Graham Cooke said the supermarket industry was 'fiercely competitive' and brands tended to excel in different areas. 'Harris Farm took the top gong in half of all the categories this year, and was the most recommended supermarket in Australia,' Cooke said. 'For those looking for a bargain though, Aldi came out on top again. Their range, however, is smaller than their competitors. 'Coles has been upping their game in delivery, and the Woolies rewards program is the highest rated in Australia, and the one only one which awards Qantas points.'Harris Farm is the lesser talked about player in the supermarket battle, and it has a much smaller footprint than its competitors. The grocer has 33 stores across NSW, Queensland and Canberra. It suffered a $22 million loss in the 2024 financial year, more than triple the previous years, and said this was due to problems with the rollout of a new software system. The group's sales rose 5.6 per cent to $788 million in the year. The grocery chain was founded in 1971 by David and Cathy Harris in Villawood in Sydney's west. Three of their five sons, Angus, Tristan and Luke, took over the day-to-day operations of the company in 2013. The three brothers were co-CEOs until two years ago when Tristan exited his executive role. He remains a director. Supermarket price wars continue as spend ticks up The average Aussie is now spending $209 per week on groceries for their households, according to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker. That's an increase from $190 per week a year ago. Families with children are spending a higher amount at $264 per week, while those without kids are spending less at $183 per week. Woolworths announced this week it would be adding more than 100 new products to its Lower Shelf Price commitment, taking the total to nearly 700. Products including rice, pasta sauce, olive oil, cereal and muesli bars will stay at the new lower shelf until at least 2026. 'We know that providing consistent, reliable value to our customers is more important than ever,' Woolworths Group CEO Amanda Bardwell said. 'This is not about temporary specials, but about long-term shelf price certainty on the products that matter most for families.' Coles has announced seasonal price drops, most recently dropping prices on more than 300 winter and household staples. Aldi has been consistently winning the government-funded CHOICE supermarket price basket comparison and recently took out Canstar Blue's top-rated supermarket award. Aldi Australia CEO Anna McGrath said the supermarket wouldn't be beaten on the cost of customers' weekly shop. "We achieve this by fine-tuning even the smallest details of our operations, ensuring that every aspect contributes to the savings we pass on to our customers,' she said. "This means we don't rely on temporary discounts, and our customers don't have to chase them." Aldi revealed its savings tactics included its use of coin locked trolleys ,smaller stores, digital price tags and oversized in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data

DC unemployment rate is the highest in the US for the third straight month
WASHINGTON -- The seasonably adjusted unemployment rate in Washington, D.C., was the highest in the nation for the third straight month, according to new data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. D.C.'s jobless rate reached 6% in July, a reflection of the mass layoffs of federal workers, ushered in by President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, earlier this year. An overall decline in international tourism — which is a main driver of D.C.'s income — is also expected to have an impact on the climbing unemployment rate in the District. Neighboring states also saw an uptick in unemployment rates in July — with Maryland at 3.4% (up from 3.3%) and Virginia at 3.6% (up from 3.5%), according to the state-by-state jobless figures. Since the beginning of Trump's second term, federal workers across government agencies have been either laid off or asked to voluntarily resign from their positions. Those actions have drawn litigation across the federal government by labor unions and advocacy groups. In July, the Supreme Court cleared the way for Trump administration plans to downsize the federal workforce further, despite warnings that critical government services will be lost and hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be out of their jobs. The latest D.C. Office of Revenue Analysis figures show that payments made to unemployed federal workers have been climbing month-over-month. In April, unemployed workers received $2.01 million in unemployment payments. By June, that figure reached $2.57 million. The DC Fiscal Policy Institute argues that the federal worker layoffs will exacerbate D.C.'s Black-white unemployment ratio. The latest nationwide unemployment rate according to the BLS is 4.2% — South Dakota had the lowest jobless rate in July at 1.9%. In addition, international tourism, a major source of D.C., to the U.S. is declining. Angered by Trump's tariffs and rhetoric, and alarmed by reports of tourists being arrested at the border, some citizens of other countries are staying away from the U.S. and choosing to travel elsewhere — notably British, German and South American tourists, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. A May report from the organization states that international visitor spending to the U.S. is projected to fall to just under $169 billion this year, down from $181 billion in 2024 — which is a 22.5% decline compared to the previous peak. The latest jobs numbers come after the Republican president and a group of GOP governors have deployed National Guard troops to D.C. in the hopes of reducing crime and boosting immigration enforcement.
