Centre likely to table Sports Governance bill, anti-doping amendments in Parliament today

New Delhi [India], July 23 (ANI): With the aim of promoting sports and providing facilities and welfare measures for sports persons, the Centre is expected to introduce the much-awaited National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the third day of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. According to the list of business published by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandviya is expected to move both the bills in the House today. The bill aims to provide for the development and promotion of sports, welfare measures for sportspersons, ethical practices based on basic universal principles of good governance, ethics and fair play of the Olympic and sports movement, the Olympic Charter, the Paralympic Charter, international best practices and established legal standards and to provide for the resolution of sports grievances and sports disputes in a unified, equitable and effective manner and for related matters. Officials have earlier stated that the National Sports Governance Bill is aimed at addressing issues such as recurring litigation over National Sports Federations (NSFs) elections and athlete selections, lack of a dedicated dispute resolution forum, inadequate athlete representation in federations, gender imbalance in sports leadership, and absence of a uniform electoral process across federations. The introduction of the bill also comes as part of the Centre's broader efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Several other nations have also expressed their interest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in hosting the event. The bill also comes amid efforts to promote sports among the general public through various initiatives like Khelo India. India also hopes to increase its medal tally in future Olympic games. Notably, according to sources in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the proposed bill will bring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under its ambit. 'BCCI will come under the ambit of sports bill and all federations will follow the regulations,' a source said. On June 17, Union Minister Mandviya had outlined India's strategy to emerge among the top medal-winning nations at the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. At a Khelo Bharat Conclave, representatives of the National Sports Federations, Paralympic Committee of India, Indian Olympic Association, institutions, top corporate houses and the who's who of Indian sports administration took part in a day-long brainstorming session aimed at making India a global power by 2047, according to a statement by Sports Authority of India (SAI). The interactive conclave covered several key pillars enshrined in the Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 (sports policy). Among them, critical discussions were held on the importance of good governance and the upcoming Bill that will be tabled in the Monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21. Towards a Viksit Bharat, the sports ministry is focusing on a three-layered structure integrated talent development pyramid starting with schools and converging at the proposed Olympic Training Centres. The government has already outlined a five-year plan (2026-27 to 2030-31) starting with residential sports school involving more than 16500 school goers who will have the opportunity to reach the intermediate level (6500-plus) and then graduate to the elite division that will cater to more than 1300 potential international medal winners. Yasutoshi Nishimura, Member of the House of Representatives, and discussed ways to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. He also received H.E. Minoru Kihara, former Defence Minister of Japan and current MP, for a similar discussion on bilateral cooperation. Last month, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, met Terada Yoshimichi, Japan's Vice Minister for International Affairs (MLITT), in Oslo. The meeting aimed to expand maritime ties between the two countries, including Japanese investment in Indian shipyards, cooperation in port digitisation, green initiatives, R&D, seafarer employment, and upskilling. The two sides also discussed Japan's possible collaboration in developing the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep Islands into smart, sustainable, and disaster-resilient islands. Sonowal said Japan's expertise in this area could help in deploying renewable energy, smart mobility, and digital infrastructure. In April 2025, following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express condolences. Prior to the call, both PM Ishiba and Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya had issued public messages of sympathy. The India-Japan partnership has seen regular high-level interactions. "We cannot give up our enrichment": FM Araghchi says Iran open to talks, firm on nuclear stance

Tehran [Iran], July 23 (ANI): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Tehran will not abandon its uranium enrichment programme despite significant damage caused by recent US and Israeli airstrikes, calling the programme a matter of 'national pride', Al Jazeera reported. 'It is now stopped because, yes, damages are serious and severe, but obviously, we cannot give up our enrichment because it is an achievement of our own scientists, and now, more than that, it is a question of national pride,' Araghchi told US broadcaster Fox News in an interview aired on Monday. Araghchi also signaled Iran's willingness to re-engage in diplomacy, saying Iran is 'open to talks' with the United States, though not directly 'for the time being.' According to Al Jazeera, he stated, 'If they [the US] are coming for a win-win solution, I am ready to engage with them.' 'We are ready to do any confidence-building measure needed to prove that Iran's nuclear programme is peaceful and would remain peaceful forever, and Iran would never go for nuclear weapons, and in return, we expect them to lift their sanctions,' the minister added. 'So, my message to the United States is that let's go for a negotiated solution for Iran's nuclear programme,' Araghchi said, according to Al Jazeera. He also emphasised that there is still a diplomatic path forward: 'There is a negotiated solution for our nuclear programme. We have done it once in the past. We are ready to do it once again.' As Al Jazeera reported, talks between Tehran and Washington on the nuclear programme were underway earlier this year, following years of tension since Donald Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The deal had allowed for extensive international monitoring of Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. However, recent developments have strained relations further. On June 13, Israel launched a series of surprise bombing raids targeting Iran's military and nuclear facilities, which led to the deaths of more than 900 people in Iran and at least 28 in Israel before a ceasefire was established on June 24. The US also joined in the attacks, and the Pentagon later said it had set back Iran's nuclear programme by one to two years. Al Jazeera noted that Araghchi said Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation is still assessing the damage to enriched materials and will 'soon inform' the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its findings. 'We have not stopped our cooperation with the agency,' he claimed, though he added that any request for IAEA inspectors would be 'carefully considered.' Inspectors had previously exited Iran after President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a law suspending cooperation with the IAEA. According to Al Jazeera, Iranian officials accused the IAEA of bias following a resolution passed by its board on June 12, which accused Tehran of non-compliance with nuclear obligations. Iran has said this resolution was one of the 'excuses' Israel used to justify its military strikes. Meanwhile, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric welcomed 'dialogue between the Europeans and the Iranians,' referring to planned talks between Iran, France, Germany, and the UK in Turkiye on Friday, Al Jazeera reported. European JCPOA signatories have warned that Iran's failure to re-enter negotiations could lead to the reimposition of international sanctions. (ANI)
