Sai Sudharsan or Abhimanyu Easwaran: Ex-cricketers back experience over potential

India Today4 hours ago

India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant has already clarified the batting order for himself and captain Shubman Gill. However, one major question remains: who will occupy the crucial No. 3 spot?Over the years, stalwarts like Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahul Dravid have defined what it means to bat at No. 3-anchoring the innings, facing a bulk of deliveries, blunting the new ball, and laying the foundation for the middle order to flourish.advertisementIn the current squad, the contenders for that role appear to be the experienced Abhimanyu Easwaran and the in-form youngster Sai Sudharsan.
The 23-year-old Sudharsan, a stylish left-hander from Tamil Nadu, is coming off a stellar IPL season, where he won the orange cap (most runs) while Easwaran has remained on the fringes-often away from the domestic scene due to regular stints with India A and periodic call-ups to the senior side.Several former cricketers believe it's time India backed experience over promise and handed Easwaran a long-awaited opportunity. Among them is former India batter Mohammed Kaif, who voiced his support on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Easwaran's consistent run in first-class cricket deserves recognition at the highest level.Kaif also expressed disappointment over the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan, despite his impressive performances in practice matches. He urged the selectors not to repeat the same mistake with Easwaran, emphasising the importance of rewarding sustained domestic excellence.advertisement"Abhimanyu Easwaran deserves to be in the playing XI before Sai Sudarshan. Easwaran's 27 first-class hundreds, almost 8k FC runs, need to be respected. By dropping Sarfraz, someone who scored runs for India A in England, the selectors made a mistake. They shouldn't repeat it by keeping Easwaran out of the Leeds Test," Kaif highlighted.Meanwhile, former cricketer-turned-coach WV Raman offered a different perspective. Instead of batting at No. 3, he believes the Bengal veteran should be slotted at the very top of the order.Like Kaif, Raman expressed frustration over Easwaran's limited opportunities and feels that the current situation presents the ideal chance for him to finally make his mark in Test cricket."Let's not forget that Easwaran has been getting runs much higher than him over a long period. We have had Easwaran as a part of the squad. We are not playing him. And that is again creating a lot of dilemmas when the next selection comes up. We will have to try and reward him fully in the sense that there is no point picking him in the squad," Raman said in an interview with the Times of India."There is a vacant slot at the top of the order. And here you have, on the other hand, you have a player who has been opening right through his life, who has got runs almost every season. And then you pick him in the squad. When there is an opening slot which is vacant, you don't use him. I think we need to first answer that particular bit," he added.Easwaran or Sudharsan - the question is likely to linger right up until the toss. Whether the final call proves to be the right one remains to be seen. Easwaran could finally be handed his long-awaited Test debut, or the team management might opt for Sudharsan with an eye on the future. The Test at Headingley will certainly shed some light on what the management is thinking in the post-Rohit-Kohli era. 'You don't miss someone who...': Former England star mocks Virat Kohli during IND vs ENG rivalry

Virat Kohli. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The first match of the five-Test series between India and England will be played at Leeds ground. Before this match, the former England captain had given a controversial statement about Virat Kohli. This has created a stir in the cricket world. Virat Kohli, who has retired from Test cricket during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, will now be seen playing only in ODI cricket. He has a great record in Test cricket. Despite this, the former England captain has taken a dig at his batting average. This has made Indian fans very angry. At the same time, the Indian team would like to answer this with its performance against England. What did Michael Vaughan say? The former England captain has targeted Virat Kohli. Talking to Fox Sports, he claimed that Team India will not miss Virat Kohli too much, because the average of this great batsman of Team India in England was only 33.21. Virat has scored 1096 runs in 17 Test matches in England. This includes two centuries and five half-centuries. 'Kohli is a legend and a culture creator around this Indian team, and what he brought as a captain to the team is still there in terms of the energy and the drive, and the aggression. But he only averaged 33 here in the UK. You don't massively miss someone that averages 33, but you miss someone that brings so much to the dressing room,' Vaughan told Fox Cricket. Vaughan said that the Indian team will not miss Virat as a batsman, but the team will definitely miss him as a legend in the dressing room. What he brought to the team as a captain is still present, but he will not be missed as a batsman. Vaughan has supported the good performance of the young players in the absence of the experienced pair of Rohit and Virat. He said that no one should be surprised if they play really well in England and claimed that perhaps they must have been waiting for this moment. 'These players that are going to come in and play for India, they're seriously good players. Maybe this new generation has been waiting. Maybe they've been waiting for this moment. Don't be surprised that they play really well,' he added.

Ben Stokes Blasted By England Great Ahead Of India Tests: "Why Wouldn't You...?"

Former Englan captain Michael Vaughan has raised concerns over Ben Stokes ' preparation for the Test series against India, starting June 20 in Leeds. The five-match series against India will be followed by a crucial Ashes tour of Australia later this year. Vaughan stressed on the fact that Stokes barely had any game time heading into the series, especially after a dip in form during the previous season. Vaughan suggested that Stokes should've at least played a game for England Lions against India A to get into the rhythm ahead of what will be a crucial six-nine months for England cricket. "I've been staggered by the lack of time in the middle that Ben's had as a batter. He didn't have a great year last year when he got his injuries. A Scottie Scheffler or a footballer going into a major event would be playing. He's had no game time. Why wouldn't you want to play for England Lions just for a knock, not to bowl? He was bowling against Zimbabwe, and clearly he's fine, but why wouldn't you just want a bit of time in the middle? Call me old school, but I think it's quite nice to go out and hit a few balls," Vaughan told The Daily Mail. Vaughan feels England can only beat Australia on their soil if Stokes is fit enough and firing as an all-rounder. "England can only win in Australia with him, and that's him being the all-rounder. If he goes to Australia just as the batter, that completely breaks the balance of the team and as much as he's a genius captain, the team are 30-40 per cent better when he bowls. To win in Australia, he has to be bowling and batting well," he added. Sharing his views on England's aggressive style of cricket under Stokes, Vaughan said: "Now it's about winning. Look at 2019 when we won the World Cup. Did England play the cricket that they'd been playing previously to win that final? Did they heck. They had to dig deep and play the old school horrible way, but they won. They are remembered as winners. I always revert back to the Newcastle football side of the 1990s - the Kevin Keegan era. Bloody great, we talk about them, but they didn't win. Make sure you're not that. Make sure that you're not the most entertaining England side that's ever been, but not won an Ashes. Don't leave it until 2027," Vaughan explained.
