Dispute that left 3 dead in Maple Ridge, B.C., had been going on for years, neighbour says

Yahoo27-07-2025
Investigators were in a Maple Ridge, B.C., neighbourhood Friday morning as residents came to terms with a violent incident that claimed three lives Wednesday night.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says RCMP found two people — a man and woman in their 60s — and a dog dead inside a home on 239th Street.
Officers found another body in a neighbouring residence.
Neighbours have identified the dead couple as seniors Bruce and Roxanne Richards. Their son declined to comment after being reached by CBC News, and requested privacy for the family.
IHIT said Thursday that investigators believe the incident was the "result of a dispute between neighbours who were known to each other."
Bruce Fairweather said the dispute had "been going on for a number of years," and he was with Roxanne hours before the attack and saw the suspect threaten her.
"She said something to him across the street, and he commented about breaking her neck," Fairweather said.
Several residents who spoke to CBC News said the couple and their neighbour had been feuding over issues like street parking, backyard fires and the couple's dog.
"She always had the dog on a long leash, and the dog would go up on his property, and he didn't want anyone or anything on his property," said Cheryl Cloutier.
Ridge Meadows RCMP said officers were first called to the neighbourhood following a report of a dispute. They spoke with "several individuals" but didn't make any arrests.
Hours later, just before 11 p.m., the Maple Ridge Fire Department reported a vehicle fire and a "break and enter in progress" at the same address.
Neighbours say they saw cars on fire and rushed to help.
"Kind of heroically, there were a number of neighbours [who] went to the front door," Fairweather said. "The front door had been smashed open, so right away they knew there was something going on."
When officers arrived, they found two vehicles and the attached garage on fire, and two people dead inside the home.
RCMP set up containment on neighbouring home
Mounties said a person was "believed to be armed with a weapon" in a neighbouring home.
They say police "set up containment," and with the help of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team, managed to enter that home — where they found another person dead.
According to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the third person died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
The IIO is investigating police actions in the incident. The civilian-led agency is called in anytime a police-involved incident results in death or serious harm in B.C.
Residents say the events of Wednesday night have left them shaken.
"They were just a good couple, nice to have as neighbours, and very engaging," Fairweather said. "So to see them both gone now, it's hard to fathom."

Rash of shootings in Chicago's Austin neighborhood may have stemmed from party, sources say

Two people are dead, and at least seven others were injured, in a series of three different shootings in the South Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side overnight Saturday into Sunday. Social media posts showed a huge party in the area as police arrived. Police have not said if the shootings are all connected, but CBS News Chicago has learned they may have stemmed from the party. Some social media posters showed hundreds of people in the streets in South Austin overnight, calling it a Club Jroy event. Another post said the event went on for 10 blocks. Some videos also show the start of some of the violence. Social media video documented the shooting started around midnight on Lamon Avenue near West End Avenue — though a police incident report placed the first shooting at 1:40 a.m. In that incident, Chicago police said officers responded to a person shot and found the victim, a 20-year-old woman, with multiple gunshot wounds to her arms. She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition. Just before 3 a.m., a mass shooting transpired about a block away, around West End and La Crosse avenues. A woman was killed and five others were wounded: At 4:37 a.m., another shooting transpired — this one on Maypole Avenue near Lavergne Avenue. Two 18-year-old men were approached by two others, who fired guns in the directions of the teens as a fight ensued. One of the 18-year-olds, identified as Kaleb Williams, was hit twice in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The other 18-year-old was hit in the arm and was taken to Mt. Sinai, initially listed in good condition. The numbers added up quickly. A police source told CBS News Chicago that police officers were so outnumbered, they had to call in units from near O'Hare International Airport, the Northwest Side, and downtown. CBS News Chicago tried to approach Mayor Brandon Johnson at a public event Sunday, asking the mayor to talk to us about the shootings and police staffing, but he would not stop for comment. Meanwhile, the organizers who promoted the event on social media acknowledged in a video clip that he had thought about canceling. CBS News Chicago tried reaching the promoter through social media platforms, but have not heard back.

Baltimore's Park Heights residents are concerned with violence following a mass shooting

Residents in Baltimore's Park Heights community are still waiting for answers after six people were shot Saturday night. A 38-year-old man was killed, and five others injured, including a 5-year-old girl, in a mass shooting in the area of Spaulding and Queensbury avenues, according to police. Some residents told WJZ they feel like they've been forgotten about by city leaders. Several neighbors who spoke off-camera said they have lived in the community for decades, and they just want it to be safe. One person said they were sitting on their front porch when they heard the gunfire. Another person says they now don't feel safe sitting outside when the sun goes down. Other neighbors call the shooting sad but say violence can happen anywhere. Joseph Payne hopes the neighborhood can come together and help one another moving forward. "It's part of Baltimore, unfortunately, when we see crime and the instability and the chaos around Baltimore City," Payne said. "It's kind of like – it is what it is, unfortunately. Where we assist each other in the block or the community, I think that would be more helpful." We Our Us, a Baltimore youth empowerment organization focused on uplifting young men and boys, says volunteers will be in the Park Heights neighborhood Monday doing outreach. Park Heights Renaissance, an organization focused on revitalizing the neighborhood, says part of its mission is ensuring safety. It wants neighbors to know they have a voice at the table. "Park Heights Renaissance wants to do everything in our power to know your voice can be heard and will be heard," said Robin Singletary, the director of marketing and communications for Park Heights Renaissance. "We want a thriving Park Heights, so whatever makes it safe for our communities while building and uplifting those neighborhoods, then we will advocate for that," Officers responded around 8:45 p.m. Saturday to the area of Spaulding and Queensbury avenues, where six gunshot victims were found, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley. Worley said that among the victims were four men, a woman, and a young child. A group of people were sitting outside on their porch and up against a car, eating, when someone started shooting, Worley said. Police said the 5-year-old was shot in the hand and is expected to recover. The 38-year-old man was found in critical condition and was pronounced dead Sunday morning. The other shooting victims are a 23-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, and a 52-year-old man. They are expected to survive. No suspects have yet been identified, according to police. Homicide Detectives are investigating this incident and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100. A New Yorker who flew to Puerto Rico for a Bad Bunny concert was fatally shot, police say

San Juan, Puerto Rico (AP) — A tourist from the U.S. mainland who was visiting Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny's residency was fatally shot early Sunday at La Perla, a popular seaside shantytown, police said. The victim was identified as Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old who lived in New York, according to a police statement. The shooting happened in the predawn hours at a nightspot called 'Refuge for Mistreated Men' in La Perla, a coastal community that has struggled to shed its dark reputation. Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz said in a phone interview that the shooting took place when several people near Mares began arguing and one pulled out a gun and shot at least three people, including Mares. A brother and a sister in their mid-40s who live in La Perla were injured and remain hospitalized. Ruiz said Mares was an innocent bystander. He was with three other friends who told police they were in Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny's 30 concerts, which have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory. Mares was shot on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said. Ruiz said police don't yet know what the people were arguing about and don't have a description of the shooter. 'We have very little information,' he said. Ruiz added that Mares' three friends also were from New York. He didn't have their hometowns. San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero told reporters Sunday that he would share footage from security cameras in the area, adding that Mares' partner had opted not to visit la Perla with him. Police said the incident occurred at 4:13 a.m., even though a municipal code approved in 2023 states that authorized businesses in San Juan can only serve or sell alcohol from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and up to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday if Monday is a holiday. La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district popular with tourists known as Old San Juan. A couple hundred people live in the shantytown, which once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin and was known for its violence. Police used to avoid the community, which used to have a sign proclaiming, 'Not open to visitors. Do not enter.' But violence eased when hundreds of federal agents raided the slum in 2011 and arrested dozens of people, including a well-known community leader who was later convicted. The neighborhood became even safer and more welcoming after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured it in their hit, 'Despacito.' But isolated violence persists. In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community. Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so. The island of 3.2 million people has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared with 325 killings in the same period last year.
