Sean Payton gives better than expected update after Drew Sanders injury

Yahoo7 days ago
There's good news on the Drew Sanders front.
When news broke over the weekend that the linebacker was set to miss extended time with a foot injury, NFL Network initially reported that Sanders suffered a tendon injury. That report was inaccurate, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton clarified after Monday's practice.
"One update just on Drew -- because there's been a lot written -- the news for us was good news in that it's a ligament in his foot, and it's not a tendon," Payton explained.
"What does that mean? It's going to be certainly north of four to six weeks, but the tendon was what we were concerned about. So, I'm not going to try to spell it, but the ligament repair is a much easier one than that of a tendon. So we were all pretty happy with that."
Payton noted that there have been cases with this kind of injury leading to surgery and some cases without surgery. Sanders is currently exploring his options.
With Sanders sidelined, Justin Strnad is the next man up as the top backup behind projected starters Dre Greenlaw and Alex Singleton in 2025. Denver also has second-year LB Levelle Bailey, plus undrafted free agent additions Karene Reid, JB Brown and Jordan Turner available at the position.

Chase Daniel breaks down training camp film of Broncos QB Bo Nix

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has been honing his craft in preparation for the 2025 NFL season, and the experts are taking notice. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel recently attended Broncos training camp alongside The Athletic's Diana Russini, and he was pleasantly surprised with the progress Nix has shown from 2024 to now. "I'm telling you, Bo Nix looks excellent," Daniel said on his YouTube channel. "He's ready to make a huge jump into year two." In his eight-minute assessment of Nix, Daniel complimented Nix's quick footwork, crisp passes on both downfield and intermediate throws and his improved mechanics after working with throwing guru Tom House. For example, at one point while looking at a clip of Nix taking a dropback, Daniels remarked, "That's the quickest five-step drop you could possibly take." As a former quarterback himself, Daniel then took viewers through why he likes what he sees. "I like these type of drills; this is really cool. (It is) a little peek under the hood of how things are made in a perfect throw," said Daniel. Daniel reviewed about 10 throws from Nix, showing how his game has taken a dramatic step forward going into 2025. "I am bullish on the Denver Broncos," said Daniel. "I think they have everything they need." Fans will get their first look at Nix's growth when Denver takes on the San Francisco 49ers in their preseason opener on Saturday (view the full preseason schedule). Roger Goodell hints at College Football RedZone amid ESPN deal

Roger Goodell is looking into having a RedZone channel for college football after ESPN acquired the NFL Network. While appearing on ESPN's SportsCenter, the NFL commissioner hinted at the potential launch of College Football RedZone. 'It'll continue to be produced right here in this building,' Roger Goodell said from NFL Network's broadcast studio in L.A. when asked about the future of NFL RedZone . 'It will be the NFL RedZone. I don't think fans will see any difference to that. 'Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things, and I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That's something that they now own and have the ability to do that. But as far as Red Zone, NFL Red Zone, there won't be any changes for our plans.' Having a college football RedZone would a big win for college football fans, as it would be a great way to keep up with multiple college football games with one channel. And with there being more college football teams than what the NFL has, a college football RedZone could last from 12 p.m. ET to 12 a.m. ET with multiple hosts. On Tuesday evening, the NFL and ESPN announced that the four-letter network acquired the NFL Network and other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL – including NFL RedZone and NFL Fantasy – in exchange for 10 percent equity state in ESPN. As Goodell mentioned, the NFL will continue to own, operate and produce NFL RedZone. 'Since its launch in 2003, NFL Network has provided millions of fans unprecedented access to the sport they love,' Goodell said in a statement. 'Whether it was debuting Thursday Night Football, televising the Combine, or telling incredible football stories through original shows and breaking news, NFL Network has delivered. The Network's sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways.'

Broncos officially release first depth chart of 2025

With the Denver Broncos set to open preseason this weekend, they have released their first depth chart of the summer. The Broncos are set to face the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday (Aug. 9), and NFL rules require the team to release a depth chart before its first preseason game. It has become clear over the last two years, though, that coach Sean Payton does not take the preseason depth chart very seriously, and he only releases it because the team is required to. Denver calls it an "unofficial" depth chart, despite it coming straight from the team. This year, Payton has continued his trend of making rookies prove their worth by placing them below veterans across the depth chart. Here's a look at the team's depth chart going into Week 1 of preseason. Denver Broncos Depth Chart Quarterback (3) No surprises on the quarterback depth chart. Stidham will serve as the primary backup again this season, and Ehlinger might be bumped down to the practice squad when the 53-man roster is set at the end of preseason. Running back (6) It wouldn't be shocking to see the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster. Don't read into Harvey being listed as RB6 on the initial list -- Payton's initial depth charts are never kind to rookies. Tight end/fullback (7) Engram is the team's top receiving threat at the position, and Trautman is safe as a blocking TE. Burton is back as the team's fullback, and Adkins fills a hybrid role. Krull, Lohner and Prieskorn might be competing for one final spot. Wide receiver (12) If the Broncos plan to carry six receivers on the 53-man roster, the favorites are pretty easy to project. But everyone will get an opportunity to impress this summer. Offensive line (16) All five starting offensive linemen from last year are returning, so the competitions will be for the backup spots this summer. The interior backups will be asked to play both guard and center, and the backup tackles should be able to play on the left and right in a pinch. Defensive line (10) Third-round pick Sai'vion Jones improves the team's depth, and Eyioma Uwazurike will look to have a breakthrough campaign in his second season back from a gambling suspension. Outside linebacker (7) Denver's already-deep room got even deeper this spring when the team drafted Robinson, but his biggest contributions might come on special teams as a rookie. Inside linebacker (9) The inside linebacker competition will be fascinating to watch this summer. Singleton is coming back from a torn ACL, and he'll turn 32 in December. Bailey has impressed early in camp, so he'll be a key player to watch in preseason. Cornerback (10) Again, don't read into Barron being buried as a rookie. He is likely set to serve as the team's nickelback this season with McMillian providing depth. Safety (8) It's hard to predict how the safety room will shake out, but there are several contenders to win a spot on the active roster based on their special teams contributions. Special teams (3) Jackson will be a UDFA to watch this summer as he'll potentially get a good amount of reps both at receiver and on special tteams. Denver will trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 26, then the club will build a 16- or 17-player practice squad. Last year, the team's initial practice squad included Burton, Tillman, Bailey and Badie. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
