
8 Ways to Respond When Someone Interrupts You
Other times, your conversation partner will clearly be making the intentional choice to talk over you. 'What they're saying is, 'What I have to say is more important than what you have to say,'' Fisher points out. 'In some sense, they've stomped on your self-esteem. They've put themselves above you.'
What should you do about it? We asked experts exactly what to say when someone interrupts you.
Just keep talking.
The first time someone talks over you, continue speaking as though you haven't been interrupted. 'If you take a pause, you allow the other person to intervene,' says Jamila Musayeva, an etiquette expert who posts educational videos on YouTube. 'It might sound like it's rude to continue what you're saying, but it establishes power. You're not allowing them to cut into your message.' The key, she adds, is maintaining the same tone: Don't raise your voice or start to mumble. 'You're not showing them that you're being triggered by it, and you're not giving them the emotions or attention they're looking for,' she says. That may be all it takes to ensure they allow you to speak.
'Bob, I can't hear you when you interrupt me.'
If the person interrupting you continues to do so beyond that initial transgression, it's time to take action. Address them by name: 'Names get people's attention,' Fisher says. Plus, when you use the phrasing he suggests, 'It's not me saying anything about you. It's me saying it about me: 'I can't hear you.'' That, he's found, usually puts an end to the interruptions.
'May I finish?'
People often make the mistake of apologizing when they're the ones being interrupted: 'Sorry, can I continue?' Avoid that—you didn't do anything wrong, says Elise Powers, who runs a global communications training firm and frequently coaches clients on how to handle interruptions. Instead, she suggests asking if you can finish what you were saying. 'Do it in a confident way, where almost no one is going to say, 'No, you may not finish,'' she says. 'It's polite, tactful, and professional—you're not trying to alienate them.' Plus, by steering clear of more aggressive retorts, you'll spare the other people in the room from an awkward exchange.
'John, I'll turn it over to you when I finish my thought.'
This is another example of how starting with someone's first name instantly grabs their attention. Once you have it, 'You're being really clear and setting their expectations,' Powers says. 'You're putting yourself in control of the situation and giving them peace of mind: 'I care about what you have to say, John. I want to hear it, so don't worry about me not valuing your perspective.'' You're simply following the optimal order of operations—you'll finish your thought, and then they can share theirs.
'I'd like to finish my thoughts—thanks for your patience.'
Even when you tell someone you'll wrap up your last points, they may continue interrupting you. That's why it's important to pair your verbal cues with body language, Musayeva says. She's noticed that, when interrupted, people tend to retract—they roll their shoulders inwards and tuck their necks in, almost like they're trying to hide or minimize themselves. Instead, 'Make sure you roll your shoulders backwards and drop them down, so it's almost like an exaggerated movement,' she advises. Your chest should be out—not in slouched form—and your neck should be elongated and open, with palms open and visible. 'We want to show that we have command of the room,' Musayeva says.
'I want to make sure: Is this a conversation, or do you need me here only to listen?'
There are levels to how you respond to an interruption—and this certainly isn't step one. But if it's happening over and over again, Fisher likes this pointed way of calling out the offense. 'It tends to take care of it,' he says.
'There have been a few times lately, today included, where I've felt like I haven't been able to share my thoughts completely.'
If you're dealing with a repeat offender—maybe a colleague who interjects every time you start to share an idea—address the issue in a one-on-one conversation, Powers suggests.
Pull the person aside after the meeting, and tell them you feel like they aren't receptive to your thoughts, because whenever you speak, they jump in. 'It's worth having a conversation to understand why this is happening, and how you could both make efforts to reduce the likelihood of it happening again,' she says.
'Sarah, you were mentioning something about X, Y, or Z. Could you elaborate more on that?'
A bonus tip: What should you do if you see a colleague being talked over? The short answer is that it depends on the context. Perhaps the person you want to advocate for would rather defend themselves, so consider the dynamics at play. 'There are some women who would feel like, 'OK, is this guy just trying to be the quarterback for me? I don't need a hero; I can handle this on my own,'' Powers says. In that case, you might approach your colleague privately: 'I noticed you weren't able to finish your thoughts in the meeting today. Would it be helpful in the future if I jumped in?' Or you could pass along your favorite strategy for responding to interruptions: 'Here's something I've done when I've been cut off. I don't know if it'll be helpful for you, but I wanted to share it because I do want to hear what you have to say.'
Generally, though, if you see someone being interrupted, there's no harm in finding a way to pass the microphone back to them. Asking them to elaborate on what they had been saying is a graceful way to express genuine interest and ensure they're heard, Powers says, without disempowering them.

Dallas Fire-Rescue says Northpark Center was briefly evacuated due to "accidental" fire
Firefighters were called to Northpark Center in Dallas after an accidental fire was sparked, causing a brief evacuation Saturday morning, officials said. Dallas Fire-Rescue said firefighters responded to the mall, located at 8687 N. Central Expressway, at about 11:30 a.m. after witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the roof near a stairwell by the food court. DFR said that after an evacuation and search, firefighters found and quickly extinguished a trash fire. DFR said according to on-scene mall personnel, the area where the fire was sparked is where employees take breaks; however, it's unclear if that's related to the fire. There were no injuries reported. DFR said even though no specific cause of the fire has been determined, it appears to be accidental.

When We 'Drop the Rock,' We Gain Serenity and Improve Our Relationships 'Drop the Rock' is a short talk by the late speaker Sandy Beach. (Yes, his real name!) It is a favorite message of mine. You can click here to listen to it on YouTube, but to summarize, the story describes a person struggling to swim out to a boat where her friends were waiting. She was weighed down by a rock around her neck (her friends could see it, yet she could not). The friends kept yelling, 'Drop the rock!' When she finally began to untangle the strings holding the rock around her neck, the load became lighter, and she could swim out to the boat and meet her friends. In this analogy, the boat represents recovery. The 'rock' is a symbol of the baggage she carried: fear, anger, resentment, and so forth. The message is that we can have emotions that weigh us down without our even realizing it. Many of us have our own rocks we carry around. We might underestimate how much they are holding us back. They harm our serenity and damage relationships. I have a CEO friend who will periodically call me after reading a column of mine. During a recent conversation, I asked how a new member of the senior team was doing. He said, 'Funny you should ask,' and shared the situation. The person had just come from an organization in which the top leader was a hard-charging, get-it-done, no-excuses type of person. The top leader described his leadership style as KITA leadership. KITA stands for 'Kick in the a**.' When he started at this organization, the CEO suggested he listen and build relationships. After some weeks went by, the feedback on the new hire was not good. People did not want to work with him. The CEO met with him and shared the feedback. The new hire admitted he had not adjusted his style to the new culture. He then said, 'I need to detox myself from where I came from.' Though a strong statement, it was accurate. The new hire apologized to his team and began listening and building relationships. I have another friend who is a managing partner of a company. Over the years, when we discussed the previous company he had worked for, it was obvious he had hard feelings for the founder. I asked if I could share an observation, and he said yes. I explained that the founder had taken a chance on him, and he earned enough money to become a managing partner of another firm. While very few leaders are perfect, overall, it seems like he ran a good company. After thinking for a while, my friend said, 'You are right. I am going to send him a thank-you.' My prediction is this will open more communication. A few tips for getting rid of baggage: Take self-inventory. In recovery, we are taught to print the names of people we resent, get angry with, are envious of, etc. Try this. Write down the reason you feel this way. Then check how your experience with the person impacted you. It usually comes down to security or self-esteem. Then write down your role in the situation or relationship. This helps you to take a more objective look. Share your list with a trusted person. This also helps get things out on the table. Say a prayer for the person. Ask that they receive what you want for yourself. All of the above will help you to stop letting a person or experience live in your head and impact your serenity. Of course, do not stay in a toxic environment. But also make sure you're not creating or adding to your own toxic environment internally by feeding negative emotions. Drop the rock. Nagasaki marks 80 years since atomic bomb dropped
NAGASAKI, Japan -- Nagasaki is marking the U.S. atomic attack on the southern Japanese city 80 years ago and survivors of the attack are working to make their hometown the last place on earth hit by the bomb. Despite their pain from wounds, discrimination and illnesses from radiation, survivors have publicly committed to a shared goal of abolishing nuclear weapons. But recently they worry about the world moving in the opposite direction as the anniversary is commemorated Saturday. The atomic bomb dropped by the United States on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, killed some 70,000 people, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima killed 140,000. Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, 1945, ending World War II and the country's nearly half-century of aggression across Asia. Aging survivors and their supporters in Nagasaki now put their hopes of achieving nuclear weapons abolition in the hands of younger people, telling them the attack is not distant history, but an issue that remains relevant to their future. Teruko Yokoyama, an 83-year-old member of a Nagasaki organization supporting survivors, said she feels the absence of those she has worked, which fuels her strong desire to document the lives of remaining survivors. The number of survivors has fallen to 99,130, about a quarter of the original number, with their average age exceeding 86. Survivors worry about fading memories, as the youngest of the survivors were too young to recall the attack clearly. 'We must keep records of the atomic bombing damages of the survivors and thier lifetime story,' said Yokoyama, whose two sisters died after suffering illnesses linked to radiation. Her organization has started to digitalize the narratives of survivors for viewing on YouTube and other social media platforms with the help of a new generation. 'There are younger people who are beginning to take action,' Yokoyama told The Associated Press on Friday. 'So I think we don't have to get depressed yet.' Nagasaki hosted a 'peace forum' on Friday where survivors shared their stories with more than 300 young people from around the country. Seiichiro Mise, a 90-year-old survivor, said he is handing seeds of 'flowers of peace' to the younger generation in hopes of seeing them bloom. On Saturday at 11:02 a.m., the moment the plutonium bomb exploded above Nagasaki, participants are to set to observe a moment of silence as a peace bell rings. About 3,000 people, including representatives from 95 countries, were expected to attend the event at Nagasaki Peace Park, where Mayor Shiro Suzuki and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba were scheduled to speak. The twin bells at Urakami Cathedral, which was destroyed in the bombing, are to ring together again for the first time. One of the bells had gone missing afer the attack but was restored by volunteers. Survivors and their families started paying tribute at the park, as well as at the nearby hypocenter park, hours before the official ceremony. Survivors are frustrated by a growing nuclear threat and support among international leaders for developing or possessing nuclear weapons for deterrence. They criticize the Japanese government's refusal to sign or even participate in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons because Japan, as an American ally, needs U.S. nuclear possession as deterrence. Nagasaki invited representatives from all countries to attend the ceremony on Saturday. China notably notified the city it would not be present without providing a reason. The ceremony last year stirred controversy due to the absence of the U.S. ambassador and other Western envoys in response to the Japanese city's refusal to invite Israel.
