Devotees coming for Kheer Bhawani after Pahalgam attack a good sign: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) described the large number of devotees attending the Kheer Bhawani Mela as a "good sign", especially in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
"The devotees have come in large numbers to attend the Mela Kheer Bhawani. This is a good sign and this is the first time after April 22 that such a crowd has gathered at a place," Lieutenant Governor Sinha told reporters here after offering prayers at the Ragnya Devi temple here in Ganderbal district.
Welcoming the devotees, the Lieutenant Governor assured that the administration has made good arrangements for the mela. "The work on yatri niwas is going on," he added.
Regarding the annual Amarnath Yatra scheduled to begin on July 3, Lieutenant Governor Sinha confirmed that all preparations for the pilgrimage have been completed.
"In terms of security as well, the security arrangements have been done and I appeal to the devotees from across the country to come here and take Baba's blessings," he said.
The Kheer Bhawani mela will be held at five Ragnya Bhagwati shrines at Tulmulla in Ganderbal, Manzgam and Devsar in Kulgam, Logripora in Anantnag and Tikkar in Kupwara on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).

At Katra rail link inauguration, Omar rakes up J&K statehood — ‘L-G was promoted but I was demoted'
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday raked up the issue of restoring statehood to the union territory, saying it was through Prime Minister Narendra Modi that 'J&K's status will be restored'. Omar was speaking at the inauguration of the rail link between Katra and Kashmir. His speech that the restoration of statehood will soon be a reality came after the prime minister inaugurated the rail link. The former state was split into two union territories on August 5, 2019 after the scrapping of Article 370 by Parliament. The issue of restoration of both Article 370 and statehood were major election issues in the J&K Assembly elections held last year after a six-year hiatus and central rule. The J&K cabinet in October last year had also passed a resolution for restoration of statehood 'in its original form'. Following this, Omar had met the prime minister in New Delhi and presented him with the government's resolution. On Friday, the chief minister recalled the inauguration of the Katra railway station in 2014 and said: 'Four people present on the stage today were also present that day including the prime minister. Manoj Sinha ji was also present on the occasion in his capacity as MoS Railway at the time and I was there'. However, Omar added: 'While Manoj Sinha sahab has gained a promotion, in my case, there is a demotion. I was the CM of a state then and I am now the CM of a union territory. But I am of the belief that it will not take too long to correct this. Aur aap hi ke haathon Jammu Kashmir ko dobara riyasat ka darja haasil hoga'. Omar emphasised that it would be a mistake not to remember former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the inauguration of the rail link connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country. 'The project has been completed now but this happened because (former) PM Vajpayee gave it the status of Project of National Importance and gave it budgetary allocation. This will greatly benefit J&K. Tourism as well locals will benefit from the rail link,' he said. The chief minister had previously said that the prime minister has committed himself to restoring statehood to J&K and they have to be given the 'first opportunity' to restore it, rather than going back to the courts. 'Every government or every individual has the recourse to courts but that was never going to be our first option,' he said., adding that going to courts for it would be a 'fight' and that 'should never be the first option'. Meanwhile, former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the launch of Vande Bharat connecting Kashmir to Jammu via rail as a 'long-awaited step'. She said that the rail link promises ease for commuters and boosts connectivity in our region and that 'from Indira Gandhi to Narendra Modi Ji everyone has contributed to this dream becoming a reality'. She has also called upon the prime minister to consider releasing Kashmiri youth 'jailed on mere suspicion post the Pahalgam attack.' 'The collective condemnation of the incident by people across the political and civil spectrum reflects our shared rejection of violence. It's time to show statesmanship and compassion especially towards those languishing in jails across India without serious charges,' she said.

Security measures enhanced in valley ahead of Amarnath Yatra
Indian security forces have intensified their efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. With anti-terror operations underway in Jammu and Kashmir, preparations for the annual pilgrimage are in full Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 9, will see heightened security measures along the entire route. The Indian Army, in coordination with other security agencies, is taking proactive steps to ensure the pilgrimage is smooth and secure. Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Prateik Sharma visited the Srinagar-based 15 Corps (Chinar Corps) earlier this week to assess the Army's preparedness and review security arrangements. 'The Army is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the journey is fully safe and smooth,' officials year, approximately 50,000 security personnel will be deployed across the 38-day journey. Forces will be stationed at base camps, on the yatra routes, and in all sensitive areas. Surveillance will be strengthened by the use of drones, helicopters, and round-the-clock CCTV monitoring. Digital mapping will be used to track the movement of pilgrims, and digital ID cards will be issued for all yatris and pony riders to strengthen identity Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Indian Army have jointly audited all routes for security. Additional safety features being implemented include the following:Blocking all approach roads linked to national highways during the yatraEnhanced jammer and escort convoy protectionDeployment of Quick Reaction Teams, bomb disposal units, K9 dog squads, and increased drone surveillanceActive deployment of combined Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles throughout the routeadvertisementThe yatra, which will commence from Pahalgam, has long been a target of terror groups. There have been 36 attacks on the Amarnath Yatra over the past 32 years. The first occurred in 1993, with multiple attacks following through the 1990s. In 2000, the deadliest attack killed 32 and injured 60 at the Pahalgam base camp, carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. In subsequent years, grenades were lobbed at camps and vehicles. A lull followed until 2017, when gunmen attacked a pilgrim bus, killing seven and injuring have emphasised that ensuring the safety of pilgrims is their highest priority. 'Security agencies have increased their vigilance for the peaceful and safe conduct of the yatra,' officials said. 'It is the priority of the central and state governments that the devotees can reach the holy cave without any fear and hinderance.'Last year, over five lakh devotees undertook the Amarnath Yatra, a number expected to rise again this year. "J-K will be given status of state by PM Modi": Omar Abdullah in Katra
Reasi (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 6 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reiterated the demand for restoring statehood to the Union territory, expressing confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the one to accomplish that. CM Abdullah was in Katra to attend the program of the flagging off of Vande Bharat trains by PM Modi from Katra railway station. During the program, apart from the Prime Minister, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Union Minister Jitender Singh were also present. 'It has been my luck and fortune that whenever there have been big programs for railways, I have been part of it. The first time Anantnag rail station was inaugurated, when the Banihal rail tunnel was opened. Looking back at the last program of my first term in 2014 happened here too... You had also become the Prime Minister for the first time, just after elections, you came here and inaugurated the Katra railway station, and you won the elections a total of 3 times to remain PM,' J-K CM said during the program. Hoping for 'things to get back to normal' in the union territories, CM Abdullah added, 'The same four people were present here in 2014 when the Katra Railway Station was inaugurated, Manoj Sinha, who was then MoS (Minister of State) for railways, got promoted as post of LG, and I got from CM of a state to CM of a UT. But things will get back to normal before we know it, and J&K will be given the status of a state by PM Narendra Modi.' Meanwhile, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha highlighted how the slogan of connecting the country to 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari' is becoming a reality with the flagging off of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Train. 'By uniting the two corners of the country, he has also made the dreams of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee come true... He has also connected the beating hearts of millions of Indians in the cities connected by this railway line... The railway bridge inaugurated today is not just cement and iron but a medium to connect the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir,' Governor Sinha said. Earlier today, PM Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting Jammu division with Kashmir. Before flagging off the trains, Prime Minister Modi interacted with school children onboard and also spoke with railway staff members present on the train. The new Vande Bharat Express service will reduce the travel time between Katra and Srinagar from the current 6-7 hours by road to just about 3 hours. The trains aim to provide a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world. The bridges were also inaugurated by the Prime Minister. In a remarkable gesture, Prime Minister Modi waved the Tiranga, the Indian national flag and carried it forward on the deck of the bridge on the Chenab River. These bridges are part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir. The project had earlier faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to the region's difficult terrain and seismic sensitivity. Yet, after years of meticulous work, the bridge now stands as a testament to India's technological prowess and commitment to inclusive development. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is 272 km long USBRL project, constructed worth around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration.
