Koneru Humpy storms into all-Indian final at FIDE Women's World Cup, sets up summit clash with Divya Deshmukh
Humpy will clash with Divya Deshmukh in the final starting after a day's rest starting on Saturday. With Humpy winning, both she and Divya have now qualified for the Women's candidates' tournament next year.
Having drawn the first two games in the normal time control Humpy had to settle up with another 1-1 draw in the tiebreaker that comprised two games with 15 minutes for both players with an increment.
After two draws here, Humpy had to really work hard in the next set of tiebreak games that had 10 minutes for both players with another increment. Lei got in the lad early in the set of these two games and Humpy erred in the middle game to lose a pawn and get in to a difficult endgame.
What followed was pretty logical as Lei got in command and even thought the position was closer to a draw Humpy did not find the best defensive resources to equalize.
Humpy lost another pawn on the queen side and despite the presence of opposite coloured Bishops in the endgame, white's influence on both flanks tilted things decisively in her favour.
It was a win on demand wherein Humpy dominated the next game. The Queen pawn opening was good enough wherein Humpy was in command right from the word go.
Humpy won with her superior technique and also her absolute determination to turn the tide in her favour from any given position.
In the third set of tie-break games Humpy drew white in the first game and crushed Lei in all departments of the game.
Winning this game meant that just a draw was needed for her to get in to the final and in the return game Humpy was at her technical best as she won again out of an Italian opening.
If there is one title that has eluded Humpy it's the World Cup and world championship. Apart that Humpy has won everything under the sun.

‘Absolutely unnecessary': Shubman Gill breaks silence on Gautam Gambhir's fight with Oval pitch curator
India captain Shubman Gill said that he fails to understand why the pitch curator at the Oval had a problem with them taking a look at the wicket from close quarters, an incident which eventually led to head coach Gautam Gambhir having a verbal altercation with the latter. Clips of Gambhir's angry exchange with Lee Fortis went viral on Tuesday and Gill said that India were never given any instructions about how to approach the pitch that were outside of what is general practice. 'As long as I remember there was never any instructions like that,' said Gill when asked on the even of the fifth Test between India and England if they were informed early on by the ground staff at the Oval about needing to stay 2.5 metres away from the playing surface when inspecting the pitch in the days before the match. 'As long as we are wearing rubber spikes or barefooted, you can see the wicket from close quarters. I don't know what happened yesterday, why the curator didn't allow it. We have played four matches (in the ongoing tour of England), no one stopped us from doing that. We have played enough cricket in the past and captains and coaches have looked at the pitches from close so many times. I don't know what the fuss was all about,' he said. Gill further siad that the coach has every right to take a look at the pitch from close quarters. 'I thought it's just absolutely unnecessary. It's not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket. We have been here for almost two months. A coach has every right to be able to go close quarters and have a look at the wicket. I don't think there is anything wrong with that and I actually don't know why the curator would not allow us to go have a look at the wicket. 'If a pitch curator is going to come and ask us to not look at the wicket, or look at it from 3 meters away, that's not something that has happened to us before. We have been playing cricket for a long time, as long as we are wearing rubber spikes or barefoot, we are allowed to look at the wicket from close quarters, which is the job of the coach and the captain. So I don't know why they didn't allow us to do that,' he said. This had sparked the confrontation between India head coach Gambhir and Fortis, where he can be seen telling the India coach that he will raise a complaint with the match referee. Fortis has been in charge of the pitch at the Oval ion London since 2012, when he was brought on to replace Bill Gordon. Before 2012, Fortis had previously worked as an assistant head groundsman at the Oval before leaving in 2006. He had a stint tending the Honourable Artillery Company ground in the City of London. After taking charge of the Oval ground as Surrey's Head of Ground Staff, Fortis claimed the award for the best multi-day pitches for the third consecutive year at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) 2024 Grounds Manager of the Year Awards last year.

Oval curator approaches Indian team a day after ugly spat, gets brutally ignored by Gautam Gambhir in fresh video
The tension between the Indian camp and the Surrey grounds staff refuses to die down. A day after chief curator Lee Fortis and India head coach Gautam Gambhir were involved in a heated argument, the former was seen approaching the Indian team again to instruct them to stand away from the pitch area. India captain Shubman Gill, head coach Gambhir, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were having a discussion around the main pitch area when Fortis was seen approaching them. The Indian think tank obliged without any fuss. Gambhir, although he agreed to change his position, gave a complete cold shoulder to Fortis. The Indian head coach ignored Fortis in a way as if he did not even exist. The Surrey curator returned after passing on the instructions, while Gill, Gambhir, Kotak, and Agarkar continued with their discussion. Gill was even seen bending down to check the hardness of the pitch, which has a greener tinge than usual Oval pitches. Gambhir was heard saying, "You don't tell any of us what we need to do… you have no right to tell us. You are just a groundsman, nothing beyond.' When Gill was asked about the tiff on the eve of the final Test, the skipper replied, "What happened yesterday was unnecessary. Coach has every right to look at the wicket. Don't understand why the curator won't allow that. As long you are wearing rubber spike or are bare feet (it should not be a problem) ....don't know why he said no. There was no such issue in the last four games," he added. Incidentally on the day, leading English players like batting mainstay Joe Root and strand-in skipper Ollie Pope were found standing on the match pitch doing shadow batting. Before that Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum stood around the pitch area and had a lengthy discussion in the presence of the curator. There was no instructions passed on to maintain any distance from the main square. What's more astounding is the fact that England head coach McCullum and ECB director Rob Key were the first ones to inspect the pitch closely on Monday in the presence of Fortis, who had no objection with them standing on the pitch, albeit wearing shoes without spikes.
