Hafiz Hashim is back in town
KUALA LUMPUR: Is Hafiz Hashim courting BAM to return as a coach?
Hafiz, who has announced on social media that his stint as a coach with Suchitra Badminton Academy in Hyderabad has ended, was spotted at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) last week as the former All England champion
is currently on holiday with his family in Malaysia.
BAM is currently on the lookout for a national women's singles coach, and 2015 Sea Games champion Chong Wei Feng has appeared to be the prime candidate.
Hafiz said that his visit to ABM was to meet some of his former players, and he has not approached BAM for a coaching offer nor did he apply for one.
However, Hafiz said that he is open to offers from either in India or in Malaysia, including BAM, though he wanted to be stationed in Hyderabad for the time being.
National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen has already met with Wei Feng during the National Under-18 Championships in Ipoh last week although the Dane denied he was discussing anything about an offer.
Hafiz said that he had not been contacted by Jonassen on the matter.
"My contract with Suchitra has ended and I'm currently based with my family there. I'm here on a holiday and will return to India over the weekend," said Hafiz.
"I went to ABM to hang out with some players. I didn't apply for a coaching job nor did I receive any offer from BAM. Jonassen has not reached out to me or said anything.
"However, I will definitely consider any good offer from here or in India."
Hafiz has been coaching at Suchitra since December 2023 and he also had a short stint with India's former world champion, women's singles P.V. Sindhu for a few months during the period.
Jonassen has also stated that he is in no rush to hire a new coach until he gets the right candidate and is willing to run the men's and women's singles programme with the help of his assistants K. Yogendran, Alvin Chew and Misbun Ramdan.

Zii Jia attempts to get back up to world top 10
KUALA LUMPUR: There is good news for Lee Zii Jia's fans as the independent shuttler is set to make a return to competition at the Japan Open on July 15-20. Zii Jia's world ranking has dropped to outside the top 20, after just playing in two tournaments this year following a right ankle injury at the World Tour Finals in December. Currently ranked No. 21, Zii Jia last played in the All England in March where he lost in the first round, and subsequently withdrew from the Badminton Asian Championships in China in April to recover from the injury. While Zii Jia's condition is still uncertain, he needs to start competing to get quality warm-up before the World Championships in Paris on Aug 25-31. The Japan and China Open (July 22-27) are the only two big events before the World Championships. Zii Jia's return coincides with the extended absence of national shuttler Ng Tze Yong who has ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which requires surgery. The injury is set to rule out the national shuttler for up to a year. It will be Tze Yong's second lengthy layoff after two back surgeries floored him for 14 months since January last year. The Japan Open men's singles will attract a world class field except for world N0. 9 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark who is recovering from a back surgery. Meanwhile the Japan Open will also see mixed doubles world No. 13 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Si Yin return to competition after missing the last three tournaments. An ankle injury to Si Yin saw the national pair withdraw from the Malaysia Masters, Singapore and Indonesia Opens. Fortunately, they were able to maintain their ranking and will be hoping to improve on their performance after managing only quarter-final spots in just two tournaments — the Orleans and Indonesia Masters — this year.

'The minister will speak on behalf of all Malaysian sports, including MA... we've already discussed the target during our meetings. 'Of course, on our part we want to do better than in 2023 — if we win less, that would be unacceptable,' he told a press conference at Wisma OCM here today. For the record, the national athletics squad brought home five gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. The five gold medals were contributed by Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin in the men's discus throw, Andre Anura Anuar (men's triple jump), Umar Osman (men's 400 metres), Grace Wong (women's hammer throw), and Shereen Samson Vallabouy in the women's 400m. Meanwhile, Shahidan also announced the list of athletes currently qualified under Category A, including sprint ace Muhammad Azeem Fahmi, Umar Osman, Andre Anura, Muhammad Irfan, Jonah Chang Rigan (shot put), and Wan Muhammad Fazri Wan Zahari (800m) for the men's team. He said the four female athletes are Shereen, Grace, Queenie Ting Kung Ni (discus throw), and Nani Shahirah Maryata (shot put), while both the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams are being considered as potential Category A qualifiers. 'Category A means the athlete is among the top three in the ASEAN region. Athletes in Category A will be fully funded by the National Sports Council (NSC),' he said, adding that 20 athletes currently fall under Category B. The 2025 SEA Games are scheduled to be held from December 9 to 20. In addition, Shahidan stated that the NSC have agreed to appoint six new athletics coaches, namely Andrew Lulham, Jorge Luis Alfaro Quinones, Yunaika Crawford Rojer, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail, Mohd Robani Hassan and Lo Choon Sieng.

Ariana optimistic national women archers will win medals at 2025 SEA Games
KUALA LUMPUR: National woman archer Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi is optimistic that her partnership with the team will bear fruit in the form of medals at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand later this year. According to Ariana, with only a few months remaining, she is confident in the capability and strength of her teammates to be at their best by the time of the biennial games. "For the 2025 SEA Games, we are targeting to win medals. I don't think it's impossible because our team is quite strong. There's not much difference between us and the other national teams," she said when met recently. She added that the effort is strongly supported by the Road To Gold (RTG) programme, which has helped improve team chemistry and training, including exposure to overseas competitions, thus enabling the team to build greater confidence when facing opponents. "So, with support from RTG and the Fast Track programme, we are getting better backing. For example, we've seen a lot of improvement in training and international tournaments. We feel we can win medals," she said. SPORTS-ARCHERY (ARIANA) 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR The trio of national women archers comprises Ariana, Syaqiera Mashayikh, and Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil. Syaqiera also expressed confidence that their trio is highly motivated to contribute medals for the country. "For me, we want to win medals regardless of the colour. So far, for the women's team event, we haven't won any medals. "In Hanoi, Vietnam, we didn't win. So, this year in Thailand, we will try our very best. We'll work hard to win medals," she said. Indonesia are seen as one of the main contenders, in addition to having a higher team ranking than the Malaysian trio at the upcoming games. – BERNAMA
