Newcastle preview: Ideal conditions has Los Padres well placed to start his campaign with consecutive victories
Luck wasn't on the side of Los Padres during the spring but he hit back this campaign with a tough first-up win and looks well placed to go back-to-back when he heads to the Hunter Valley.
The Mitchell Beer -trained gelding was still caught wide with cover before closing strongly down the centre of the track and dug deep to score in a tight finish from Divine Vicky and Headstock at Kembla two weeks ago.
Los Padres was ridden by Beer's new stable apprentice, Holly Durnan, who sticks with the gelding in the Benchmark 68 Handicap (1250m).
'He didn't have the best run that day. He was caught deep and was a bit keen in the middle stages but he was quite tough late,' said George Carpenter, assistant trainer to Beer.

'He is a lovely horse who had a lot of bad luck last preparation so it was good to get the win first-up with him. It was a good confidence booster for him'
The four-year-old son of Zoustar has drawn ideally in barrier 4 to allow him to settle closer and a wet track is right up his alley.
Los Padres has had two starts on heavy tracks for a third to Navy Blood at Newcastle last May and he resumed last campaign with a third to Let's Go Again and Mogul Monarch under 61kg at Kembla.
'He has drawn a perfect gate in barrier 4 and doesn't have to settle as far back. He should just get a really nice run in transit,' he said.
'I think he's a really good chance again.'
New stablemate Shehasattitude also lines up in the race.
She beat just one home behind Candlewick at her stable debut at Warwick Farm just over two weeks ago but a drop in grade and a wet track can see her bounce back.
'She was first-up off a long break and has taken a lot of benefit from the run,' Carpenter said.
The four-year-old won three of her first six starts including a win from Know Thyself last May.
'She has plenty of ability and has a great attitude in her work at home,' he said.

'Whether she runs here or wait for Warwick Farm next week, that decision is yet to be made but she will be competitive wherever she goes.'
November Falls was game in defeat on a heavy track at Newcastle last week but a better draw can see her go one better in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1890m) where she has drawn barrier 1.
After settling midfield, she made a move from the 600m to go out after the free-rolling leader and was very wide on the bend before Magicon by a length.
'It was a nice run last start. She gave everything she had and was only run down by a horse who had a nice run behind her and peeled off her back,' said Carpenter.
'She gets everything she needs this weekend to go one better.
'She has drawn a nice gate, a wet track and the distance suits. I'm sure she will be right there in the finish.
'She is pretty adaptable. She could either lead or take a sit just behind the leader.
'With the rail out nine metres, you would think it will benefit those horses up on the speed.'
'He's like a fine wine. He keeps getting better with age,' he said.
'He gets a wet track which is ideal and he has drawn quite well.'

Defending Inter Dominion winner Don Hugo takes first step towards his title defence with a return at Menangle
Luke McCarthy is a realist. The champion NSW horseman will take his stable star Don Hugo to Brisbane to defend his Inter Dominion crown and knows the bar has been raised. That's because, unlike in last year's Menangle Inter Dominion final, Don Hugo will have one of the greatest pacers this part of the world has seen in Leap To Fame to contend with. There's another factor niggling away at McCarthy, too. 'This year's (Inter Dominion) final is over 3157m and that plays to Leap To Fame's greatest strength, his stamina,' McCarthy said. 'Over the sprint distances, Don Hugo can be too sharp for him, but the longer the races, the harder he is to beat. 'We're talking about an out-and-out champion, one of the best pacers I've seen in Leap To Fame. 'We've beaten him before and I've got huge faith in my horse, but I'm also aware of the enormity of the challenge ahead in a series run in his backyard and a final over that sort of distance.' Don Hugo, who returns from a spell in a 2300m race at Menangle tonight, has clashed with Leap To Fame just three times and trails him 1-2. 'He's thrived during the break, had a trial and private workout at Menangle, and he's raring to go this week. 'I plan to back him up the following week and then take him straight into the opening round of (Inter Dominion) heats on July 5.' Leap To Fame, who resumed from a break with a narrow but impressive Albion Park win last Saturday, will change tact when he backs up tomorrow (Saturday) night. Trainer-driver Grant Dixon has opted to run him from a 30m handicap over 2138m. It will be just his second standing-start race in 65 starts. He won the other at Albion Park back on June 8, last year.

The Lyle Chandler-trained daughter of Zoustar trialled like a bomb before her winning debut at Tamworth where she got a great ride. Scratched from Taree on Thursday to run here. WILLINGA KARISMA (1) has the home ground advantage. She's never been closer to a win. MISSY MOSS (9) has a bad draw but Bullock will help with that. Bet: Zelestial to win RACE 6: WESTERN PLAINS AUTOMOTIVE COUNTRY BOOSTED SHOWCASE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1100m PRESSNELL (2) is a genuinely talented son of Press Statement, hence the name, think Max. This big, bold gelding has a win, a second and two fifths from his four starts. This was already a very winnable race for the Mack Griffith-trained galloper but his chances went up when he drew 2 and Bullock booked. SORRENTO PALACE (6) aims to, and can, snap a sequence of three consecutive seconds, keeping in mind that the last two were by very narrow margins indeed. Bet: Pressnell to win, quinella 2, 6, box trifecta 2, 6, 11, 7 RACE 7: FARDELLS HEAVY HAULAGE & CRANE HIRE SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP 1000m CUMNOCK (11) has the lowest Benchmark rating in this race; he's on 60, the ones at the top are both on 77. That said, he is a last start winner on the move. Was to run in the Highway on Saturday but is way down the list so run here instead where he is two from two at the track and trip. IRON HAT (1) has won six races with 12 placings. Famously unlucky at times, the Jan Bowen-trained chestnut has mixed and matched it in better races than this. ZAKOR (4) is good enough to win most country sprints; this one included. Bet: Cumnock each-way, quinella 1, 11 RACE 8: EVERGREEN TURF | ELITE SAND & SOIL SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP 1400m RHYTHM IS A DANCER (2) has won seven races in 27 starts with eight placings which is a fine achievement on his, and trainer Brett Cavanough's, behalf. Among those wins are a Country Cup at Scone and a Spring Cup at Tamworth where he beat Russley Crown each time as it happens. Walked in at Inverell last start. This is harder if only for the presence of another good, old trusty Scone resident namely THE DRAMATIST (1). That said, he needs things to pan out for him but when they do, he's city class. Racing Confidential: Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Wayne Harris recovers from spinal surgery
Wayne Harris, the former champion jockey and popular Sky Thoroughbred Central form expert, is recovering slowly after another major spinal surgery. Harris has had ongoing health issues for some years and been forced to undergo many operations. But he has repeatedly shown remarkable courage to continually overcome his health setbacks. His many friends in the racing industry are hoping he returns to the racetrack very soon. A naturally gifted jockey, Harris won the 1979 Golden Slipper while still an apprentice on Century Miss and later in his career rode Jeune to win the 1994 Melbourne Cup before increasing weight and health problems forced him into retirement.
