County Durham home salon approved despite neighbour concerns

A Chester-le-Street woman has been granted permission to run a hair salon from her home. Joanne Proctor, of 32 Coquet Drive, Perkinsville, applied to convert a self-contained bedroom into a part-time hair salon. The extension, which has its own front door, kitchen, toilet, and garden access, was initially given planning permission in April 2024 and is already built. Durham County Council made the decision on August 12, despite receiving three objections, including two from neighbouring properties. Concerns raised by objectors included noise, potential anti-social behaviour, parking issues, and a "loss of privacy" due to the side door being used by clients. One neighbour at 33 Coquet Drive expressed worries over "noise and disturbance from equipment, conversations, music, and comings and goings including from additional vehicular movements" and "loss of privacy due to clients using a side door that is next to their property." To address these concerns, the council has imposed several conditions on the salon's operation. These include serving only one customer at a time, by appointment only, with a 10-minute gap between appointments. Additionally, windows and doors must remain closed during treatments. The salon's opening hours are restricted to Tuesday 9am to 4.30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 6pm, Friday 10am to 4pm, and alternate Saturdays 9am to 4pm. Recommended reading Meet the Teesside RuPaul's Drag Race star joining Strictly Come Dancing 2025 Busy summer of wildlife, remembrance and reminiscence at Middleton Hall The 'hypnotic' stingray-like animal that roams our beaches all year round The salon can only be operated by Ms Proctor and her daughter, and must revert to residential use once they vacate the property. The salon will use the standard Durham County Council bins for both general and recyclable waste. Highways Authority and Environmental Health (Nuisance Action Team) raised no objections to the plans.

My Coworkers Always Ask Me Where My Clothes Are From—Here Are the 14 Pieces I Recommend the Most, From $35

Being a fashion writer means I'm basically paid to be a professional outfit detective. I'm always on the hunt—scrolling through new arrivals, adding way too many tabs to my browser, and finding pieces that fit my personal style. One of the unexpected joys of going into the office (aside from the free cold brew) is getting dressed for it. After a few days of working from home in sweats, I relish the chance to pull together a real outfit. And let's just say my coworkers never let a good look go unnoticed—their compliments make my morning coffee taste even better. Somewhere along the way, I realized my go-to office outfits were pulling double duty as my go-to travel looks. Whether it's a maxi dress, matching skirt set, or comfortable sneakers, they're the kind of effortless staples that can handle a full work day in New York City, a gelato run in Florence, and a boat ride on the Seine, without missing a beat. With workwear trending well beyond the cubicle, these versatile pieces are having quite the glamorous side hustle. Here are the 14 heroes of my summer wardrobe—from Madewell, Amazon, Nordstrom, and more—that have been racking up compliments from the office to the other side of the Atlantic, starting at just $35. I wore this striped bubble-hem tee to a team barbecue and fielded many 'Where's that from?' questions. The boat neckline and playful hem make it look like I put way more effort into my outfit than I did, and the cool-girl color palette works with everything from linen shorts to white denim. I pack it for trips because it dresses up easily with jewelry yet feels breezy enough for sightseeing. These 100 percent linen pleated shorts are my warm-weather office savior—structured enough for meetings, but breathable enough to wear straight into a weekend getaway. The double front pleats and back welt pockets give them polish, while a belt or layered necklace makes them feel styled without effort. I've worn them to work with loafers and then on vacation with slides, proving they're a true multitasker. The day I wore this two-piece set to the office, I lost count of how many coworkers stopped me to ask where I got it. It's that good. For $23, you get a lightweight maxi skirt and matching top that work as a pair or as separates—ideal for packing light. I've worn the skirt with a tee and the top with jeans, and it feels like a new outfit every time. This is my all-time favorite skirt for both commuting and traveling—it's so airy, I barely notice I'm wearing it even on sweltering subway rides. The low-waist and front-tie give it a laid-back edge, and I love how it goes from a strapless top and sandals on vacation to a tee and cardigan in the office. It's the definition of easy, versatile style. I've lost track of how many times I've heard 'Those are cute—where'd you get them?' when I wear these Steve Madden sneakers to work. The slip-on style is a lifesaver for airport security, and the tan-and-white palette ties together almost everything in my closet. They're the kind of shoes that look styled without trying, which is my favorite kind of travel hack. $158 $130 at This bright orange poplin maxi always earns a 'That color!' comment when I wear it to work. Made from 100 percent cotton, it's featherlight for hot days yet structured enough to feel put-together. It's just as great for a summer Friday in the office as it is for walking along the coast of Italy with sunnies and sandals (as you can see). This textured vest is one of those pieces that makes your outfit instantly look intentional. I've paired it with jeans in the office and silk pants for a trip, and it layered beautifully both times. At 30 percent off, it's a solid wardrobe investment—it's light enough to throw in a carry-on, but still pulled-together enough for a work presentation. When I wear this pleated skirt with my Nordstrom vest, the compliments start before I even reach my desk. The semi-sheer, lightweight fabric means I never overheat, and the movement gives it a subtle drama that's perfect for strolling through museums or attending an office happy hour. It's the rare wardrobe staple that works in every season, which makes it a packing no-brainer. I've walked 10,000 steps in these Mary Janes without a single blister, which for me is unheard of. The square toe and gold hardware make them look elevated, and they add personality to even the simplest jeans-and-tee combo. Whether I'm dashing to a meeting or wandering cobblestone streets, they keep me comfortable and looking polished. Even in summer, my office is an icebox, so this cardigan is my desk-side savior. The gold buttons make it look way pricier than its Amazon price tag, and people are always shocked when I tell them where it's from. I throw it over everything—from a maxi skirt to straight-leg jeans—and it's saved me on more than one chilly evening abroad. I have this skort in oatmeal, but it comes in nine colors—and every time I wear it, someone asks for the link. The linen-viscose blend gives it a comfortable, breezy feel I look for in a skirt, but it has the added practicality of shorts underneath, which makes it ideal for bike rides in Europe or running errands between meetings. It's a rare piece that feels playful but still professional. These sneaker-flats feel like butter the second I slip them on, and they're my secret to surviving long office days without sacrificing style. The satin finish makes them look a little more refined than regular sneakers, so they work just as well with tailored trousers as they do with a sundress. Comfort plus polish is the sweet spot for me. $138 $100 at I've been wearing these Madewell Harlow Wide-leg Jeans on repeat since the start of summer. They have the drape of trousers but the softness of broken-in denim, which means I can sit comfortably on a plane and still look meeting-ready when I land. I love how they pair with sneakers for sightseeing and loafers for the office. This short-sleeve cardigan with a gold accent is the ultimate 'I tried' piece for mornings when I didn't. I wear it over a tank to the office or with a maxi skirt when I travel, and it always earns compliments. It's light enough for layering, and it adds just the right amount of polish. Oasis Dublin performance hailed as 'noisiest in Irish history'

Oasis have been hailed as the "noisiest and most celebratory concert in Irish live music history" after their performance at Croke Park in Dublin. The band took to the stage for the sixteenth concert on their reunion tour, playing yet another sell out show on the world tour after dates in Cardiff, Manchester, and London. Noel Gallagher previously played Croke Park back in July 2017, performing to a half empty stadium while supporting U2 on their sold out 30th anniversary tour of album The Joshua Tree, DublinLive reports. Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here Oasis played to a crowd of some 80,000 people at the venue, with the stadium already nearly full by the time second support act Richard Ashcroft took to the stage at 7pm. Journalist Mark Kavanagh went along to the performance for DublinLive to see the iconic Manchester band as they continue their world tour. Here's what he had to say: The joyous scenes and universal praise from the 15 previous Oasis Live 25 triumphs at Cardiff, Manchester and London perhaps heightened the sense of eager anticipation for the two Croke Park shows. The city has been buzzing all week and I've never had so many people enquire if I knew where they could get tickets. Ashcroft slayed the hyper Irish audience and the singalongs for his best known tunes suggested the raucous carnival atmosphere inside the Dublin stadium might just eclipse all of the UK dates and then some. And that's because no supporters in the world are more deafening than Irish fans, who tonight, like Oasis, were in scorching form, lapping up the solid gold set of back-to-back glorious anthems. Join our Oasis WhatsApp group HERE A wall of sound erupted when the siblings walked on stage before launching into a seismic opening salvo of Hello, Acquiesce and (What's the Story) Morning Glory. The wave of excitedly bobbing bodies on the pitch resembled a giant mosh shook his tambourine and spat out every lyric like his life depended on it; his voice sounded more potent than it has ever been, and especially powerful on the momentous Rock 'n Roll Star and Slide Away. The band were super tight, glued together by the chug of rhythm guitarist (and founding member) Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs. Noel looked not just relaxed and assured, but like he was actually enjoying every solo turns – which started with a pace-changing Talk Tonight – were the emotional heart of a spectacular show. Hearing more than 80,000 people almost drown him out by singing along to every word of Half The World Away was emotional. Bear in mind this was originally released as just a bonus track on 1994's standalone single Whatever. Noel stepped it back up a gear with Little By Little before Liam stormed the stage again for another rousing run of favourites that kicked off with D'You Know What I Mean? and Stand By Me and finished with phenomenal versions of the epic Live Forever and the blistering Rock N Roll Star. At that point, it was already a 10 out of 10 performance even without the ensuing encore of The Masterplan and crowd-pleasers Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova, the latter the type of song for which stadium-sized concerts like this were invented. It's incredible that all but three of the 23 songs performed at Croke Park were released in an 18-month imperial era between April 1994 and October 1995, and quite a few of them were just B-sides. This was a magnificent event, everything Irish fans could have wished for, with a little bit extra sprinkled on top. The sight and sound of multitudes of fans too young to have ever seen Oasis in concert before punching their arms and singing their hearts out in unison with 90s veterans like me was quite the communal experience to behold. The band was loud but the Irish crowd were even louder and Sunday night's revellers will need to up their game to beat there be more shows to follow this tour? It would seem like a folly not to seize the moment and do a couple of Slane Castle shows in 2026 alongside at least two mammoth Knebworth outings. On the evidence of tonight, I sincerely hope so.
