"Too Risky": Karnataka Distributor Refuses To Release Kamal Hassan's 'Thug Life'
Will not release Kamal Hassan's 'Thug Life' despite Supreme Court's order because I don't think it will do good business here two weeks after it was released across India, said Venkatesh Kamalakar, the distributor of the film in Karnataka on Wednesday.
'Thug Life', directed by Mani Ratnam, released across India on June 5. In Karnataka, the film is yet to release due to the controversial statement made by Haasan that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'.
On a petition filed by a Bengaluru resident seeking the release of the film in Karnataka, the Supreme Court had on June 17 held that it is the duty of the state to ensure that a film is released in theatres once it gets a Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate.
Speaking to PTI, Mr Kamalakar said it also does not make sense to release the film considering that Kannadigas' sentiments were hurt by what Haasan had said about Kannada language.
"But mostly it is because it is not a good business decision to release the film now. His previous film 'Indian 2' also did not do well here in Karnataka," said Mr Kamalakar.
The distributor said Mr Haasan's 'Vikram' did well in Karnataka, but he does not have a fan base here that will blindly go to his film, no matter what.
"When it comes to his films, the success depends on how good it is. 'Thug Life' is generally considered as not a good film by many. So, it is too risky," said Kamalakar, who distributes mostly big budget Tamil films in Karnataka.
According to industry sources, the distributor had already paid about Rs 9 crore as advance.
Mr Kamalakar agreed he did pay an advance amount without disclosing the amount, but said he is not anticipating any difficulty in getting it back.
"It is not like it is our fault. Things turned out the way it did and when there is no profit, which theatre owner will agree to showcase the film," he asked.
Meanwhile, many pro Kannada outfits in Bengaluru have allegedly asked the theatres not to showcase the film despite SC's directive.
On Wednesday, Bengaluru Police posted notices on the houses of several pro Kannada activists. They informed the activists that they are not allowed to protest anywhere other than the designated protest site of Freedom Park.
But Praveen Shetty, one of the very vocal protesters of the statement, and who has his own faction of Kannada Rakshana Vedike, had allegedly refused to accept the notice as well as responsibility for any protests.
Earlier, speaking to PTI Videos, Mr Shetty had said that he is yet to receive the notice from the police.
"But Kannadigas will not surely watch that film," he added.
RT Nagar Police, under whose jurisdiction his house falls, finally posted the notice in front of his house.

Coolie Day 5 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth's crime-drama falters on 1st Monday after record extended Kollywood opening weekend
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, had a record Kollywood opening weekend of Rs 227.25 crore. Not just that, it also took a record Kollywood global opening of Rs 375 crore. While the weekend was record-breaking, the numbers were slightly under expectations, given how big the movie opened. Based on the opening day, the weekend numbers should have been close to Rs 250 crore in India and over Rs 400 crore worldwide. Coolie Falters On 1st Monday By Grossing Just Rs 12 Crore The mixed word of mouth took a toll on the Lokesh Kanagaraj movie. After the already slumping weekend trend, the movie grossed just Rs 12 crore on day 6. The numbers are 80 percent down from Independence Day Friday and that's alarming. If the movie continues to drop like this, a Rs 300 crore gross India final can be a struggle. Also, that would mean that a Rs 500 crore gross worldwide finish would become impossible, as the highest that Coolie can do at the international box office based on its current trend is USD 21 million (Rs 183 crore gross). The collections in Tamil Nadu will likely end under that of Good Bad Ugly. The collections in Kerala shall end up being half of what Jailer did in 2023. The film's exceptional Karnataka and APTS collections over the opening weekend should ensure that the film breaks even or atleast comes very close to it. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 75.50 crore Friday Rs 63.25 crore Saturday Rs 47 crore Sunday Rs 41.50 crore Monday Rs 12 crore Total Rs 239.25 crore gross in 5 days Coolie Will End Up As One Of The Top 5 Highest Grossing Kollywood Movies Worldwide But The Final Result Will Be Seen As Underwhelming Coolie, despite putting up record-breaking initial collections and being a film that will surely be a part of the top 5 highest grossing Tamil movies at the worldwide box office, will be seen as an underwhelmer because the expectations were of a record grosser. The Tamil industry will have to wait for Jailer 2 or Jana Nayagan to really see its potential unleashed again.

This 2-hour 32-minute psychological thriller film will send chills down your spine, climax will leave you speechless, movie is..., lead actors were...
In a city veiled in darkness, a sinister pattern begins to emerge, gruesome murders marked by eerie smiley faces, each more unsettling than the last. Fear spreads like wildfire as a relentless killer plays mind games with the police. But this isn't just a hunt for a murderer, it's a chilling descent into the disturbed psyche of both predator and pursuer. Which film is this? Here we are talking about Iraivan, a Tamil-language psychological thriller film directed by I. Ahmed, which is one such movie that has stirred conversations among audiences and critics alike. Released on September 28, 2023, the film delves into dark corridors of human psyche, exploring themes of justice, trauma, and the thin line between sanity and madness. What was the storyline of Iraivan? The narrative centers around Assistant Commissioner Arjun, portrayed by Jayam Ravi (now known as Ravi Mohan), a cop known for his unorthodox methods and a penchant for delivering justice through lethal encounters. His world is upended when he confronts a serial killer named Brahma, played by Rahul Bose, who leaves a trail of gruesome murders marked by smiley face notes. The case takes a personal toll when Arjun's close friend and colleague, Andrew, is killed during the investigation, prompting Arjun to resign and seek solace in a quieter life with Priya, Andrew's sister, played by Nayanthara. However, peace remains elusive as Brahma escapes custody, reigniting a terrifying killing spree that forces Arjun back into the fray. How were the performances? The film's strength lies in its atmospheric tension and the performances of its lead actors. Jayam Ravi delivers a compelling portrayal of a man grappling with guilt and a thirst for justice, while Rahul Bose's depiction of Brahma is chillingly effective, capturing the essence of a remorseless killer. Nayanthara, though given limited screen time, brings depth to her role, embodying the emotional anchor in Arjun's tumultuous life. Despite its promising premise, Iraivan received mixed reviews. Critics praised the film's initial setup and the psychological complexity of its antagonist but noted that the narrative loses momentum in the second half. Some reviewers also pointed out that the film's attempt to shock with graphic violence overshadowed its psychological depth. More about Iraivan Box office-wise, Iraivan performed modestly. With a worldwide gross of around Rs 22.5 crore, it didn't break records but found its audience post-theatrical release, which was made under budget of Rs 4 crore, and is currently streaming on Netflix.
