Lawyer confirms Zara Qairina audio clip is real, rejects washing machine theory
Hamid Ismail, who represents Zara's mother Noraidah Lamat, said the audio recording has been submitted to the police for further action, Berita Harian reported.
Hamid also urged the public to stop spreading baseless theories and speculation surrounding the 13-year-old's death.
He warned that rumours circulating on social media risk disrupting police investigations and tarnishing the dignity of Zara and her family.
According to Hamid, all parties should focus on justice instead of fuelling confusion through sensational claims.
'Stop such speculation,' he was quoted as saying about claims such as Zara having been injured as a result of being placed inside a washing machine.
The conspiracy theory has gone viral in recent days across anonymous social media accounts, with some alleging the washing machine was used to remove fingerprints and DNA.
To date, authorities have not confirmed any elements linked to the claim, while Zara's family lawyers continue to push for a reopened investigation, a fresh autopsy, and an inquest under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to determine the true cause of death.

Elderly taxi driver claims trial to sexually assaulting teen passenger

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : A taxi driver was charged in the Muar sessions court today with committing sexual assault on a teenage passenger in May. Low Fatt Tham, 76, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him in Mandarin by a court interpreter before judge Sayani Nor, Harian Metro reported. Low is accused of committing the offence on the 16-year-old student inside his taxi after it stopped at a traffic light on Jalan Mohd Salim in Kluang at about 8.20pm on May 13. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Fauzi prosecuted while Low was represented by lawyer Nursyidah Muslim. The accused was allowed to post bail at RM10,000 with one surety but was ordered to report to the nearest police station every month and barred from contacting prosecution witnesses, particularly the victim, until the case is concluded. The court set Sept 4 for mention.

Johor homestay operator settles RM70,000 piracy case with Astro

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : A Johor-based homestay operator has reached a RM70,000 settlement with Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd over the illegal streaming of the broadcaster's content. In a statement, Astro said this was the first time its subsidiary Measat Broadcast Systems Sdn Bhd had resolved a piracy case involving a short-term rental business. Astro's chief sales and marketing officer Tai Kam Leong said the case highlighted the spread of content piracy. 'Whether it's a hotel, café or short-term rental, those in the hospitality sector must understand using TV boxes to stream content without a commercial licence is unlawful and undermines the creative economy,' he said. In November 2022, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that broadcasting content from unauthorised sources for commercial use without the proper licence was illegal. The homestay operator, registered as The Cactus X Empire, was found to have used unauthorised streaming devices to broadcast Astro channels at rental units in Iskandar Puteri and Johor Bahru without a commercial subscription. Under the settlement, it agreed to pay RM46,000 in damages and legal costs, subscribe to five AstroBIZone commercial packages valued at RM24,000 for at least 12 months and issue a formal apology on its official Facebook page. The apology posted on the Cactus Homestay JB Facebook page acknowledged the infringement and urged others in the hospitality industry to use only licensed sources for entertainment content. 'We unequivocally condemn all forms of piracy and affirm our commitment to respecting Astro's intellectual property rights now and in the future. We are grateful to Astro for allowing us the opportunity to rectify our actions,' said the operator. In January, Measat was awarded RM175,000 in another case involving the unauthorised streaming of its premium content. The same High Court ruled in favour of Measat on Jan 7, after Frenz Pool Café and Tuwang 69 Sdn Bhd were found to have streamed an English Premier League match without permission. The court also issued a permanent injunction against the two companies, barring them from further unauthorised use of Astro's content.
