He explained that Peace Walk Since 2022 is a community organisation that has done peace walks across Africa.
'The campaign started in January 2022. I was walking for peace and stability on our continent. I have met many people and have had the privilege of speaking to them personally to convey my message of peace,' he said.

Ekurhuleni and company join forces to revitalise Winnie Mandela Park
The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) partnered with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) to host a clean-up and park revitalisation at Winnie Mandela Park in honour of Mandela Day. The collaboration between the city and CCBSA stems from a long-standing partnership. Many CCBSA employees based at the Olifantsfontein facility reside in nearby communities, making Winnie Mandela Park a meaningful choice for this initiative. The project included cleaning up the park, painting decorative rocks, and installing new benches donated by CCBSA. 'CCBSA approached us with the idea of a joint initiative focused on climate change resilience. 'Since their factory is located nearby, with Thembisa as a host community, we adopted a multi-faceted approach involving various departments such as city parks, energy, and environmental services,' said Tentu. The city hopes to use this initiative to raise awareness about park maintenance and climate action. 'We urge the community to stop vandalising public spaces and to protect these areas. People are damaging the parks or turning them into dumping sites. 'It not only affects the children who play there but also poses health risks to nearby residents and emergency responders. Ward 2 Clr Thato Mashiane expressed his excitement about the improvements in the area. 'I'm elated to see the plans we made during our asset-based community workshop come to life. This is just the beginning; many more programmes are on the way. 'What makes this moment special is that members of the community are present to witness and take part in it. 'We encourage them to keep the park clean and prevent it from becoming a dumping ground. This is how we honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, by giving back, building partnerships, and restoring hope.' The event was well-received by residents. Several organisations took part in activities that included reblocking, cleaning, painting, and installing benches and trees.

Mandela Day clean-up sparks ongoing taxi rank renewal in Carletonville
The usually bustling Carletonville taxi rank took on a new look this Mandela Day, as it was transformed into a beacon of community pride and civic responsibility. Volunteers from all walks of life joined taxi operators in a massive clean-up effort on July 18, setting the tone for an ambitious campaign aimed at restoring dignity to public transport spaces. This clean-up, while symbolic of Mandela's legacy of service, was not just a once-off event. It marked the launch of a long-term initiative by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) West Gauteng Region, backed by local stakeholders and government agencies. The campaign will continue into October's Transport Month and beyond, with the goal of maintaining taxi ranks as safe, clean, and respected community hubs. 'Taxi ranks are not just places where people pass through. They are vital economic and social centres that serve millions of South Africans every day,' said a SANTACO representative. Volunteers tackled grime, litter, and disrepair, breathing new life into one of the town's most important public spaces. The effort turned Mandela's call for active citizenship into tangible action, while setting an example for similar initiatives in other areas. Organisers emphasised that the vision is one of sustainability, where collaboration between taxi operators, commuters, municipalities, and private partners will ensure continuous upkeep and community involvement. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for transforming neglected infrastructure into vibrant, functional, and respectful environments across South Africa.
