Ekurhuleni and company join forces to revitalise Winnie Mandela Park
The collaboration between the city and CCBSA stems from a long-standing partnership.
Many CCBSA employees based at the Olifantsfontein facility reside in nearby communities, making Winnie Mandela Park a meaningful choice for this initiative.
The project included cleaning up the park, painting decorative rocks, and installing new benches donated by CCBSA.

Sibaphiwe Tentu, the regional manager for parks operations and planning in the CoE, explained that the partnership goes beyond Mandela Day.
'CCBSA approached us with the idea of a joint initiative focused on climate change resilience.
'Since their factory is located nearby, with Thembisa as a host community, we adopted a multi-faceted approach involving various departments such as city parks, energy, and environmental services,' said Tentu.
The city hopes to use this initiative to raise awareness about park maintenance and climate action.
'We urge the community to stop vandalising public spaces and to protect these areas. People are damaging the parks or turning them into dumping sites.
'It not only affects the children who play there but also poses health risks to nearby residents and emergency responders.

'As part of this initiative, we will plant over 20 trees to revive the park and restore its former reputation,' he added.
Ward 2 Clr Thato Mashiane expressed his excitement about the improvements in the area.
'I'm elated to see the plans we made during our asset-based community workshop come to life. This is just the beginning; many more programmes are on the way.
'What makes this moment special is that members of the community are present to witness and take part in it.
'We encourage them to keep the park clean and prevent it from becoming a dumping ground. This is how we honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, by giving back, building partnerships, and restoring hope.'
The event was well-received by residents.
Several organisations took part in activities that included reblocking, cleaning, painting, and installing benches and trees.

In honour of Mandela Day, the Novalo Learning Sector visited Boitumelong Secondary School in Moriting, Thembisa, on July 18. They cleaned the school's library and donated a collection of books to help the learners improve their reading skills and vocabulary. 'The core focus of the foundation is to break poverty through education, which is why we chose to support a school library,' Mgidi said. The books were donated as part of a book drive the organisation hosted in early July. 'Through research, we identified this school's library and began planning how to assist. We approached the principal, followed the necessary protocols, and were granted permission to clean and donate books. Many of the books we've donated today were given to us by Unisa,' she said. 'We underestimated how many tables and chairs we would have to move to clean the space. 'The library was very dusty, and our surgical masks weren't enough. Fortunately, the principal stepped in with industrial masks. Putting everything back will also be a task,' Mgidi added. The Novalo team also repaired damaged bookshelves, arriving with tools and materials to ensure the space was fully restored for learners to use.

Clean up benefits Margate Taxi Rank
The Margate Taxi Rank benefitted from a Mandela Day celebration that was organised by Siyanda Dlamini of the Peace Walk organisation. Dlamini had a goal of filling 50 refuse bags with litter collected at the taxi rank. He said the aim was to encourage people to come together and take care of their communities. 'If we take care of our communities, our communities will take care of us. If we look after our towns and cities, we can attract investors. Tourists will also want to visit our communities if they're taken care of,' he said. He added that he appreciated the mall management at the Margate Taxi Rank who delegated a few of the mall's employees to assist in the clean up. Dlamini also thanked Greta Opperman for the support he has received on the South Coast. He explained that Peace Walk Since 2022 is a community organisation that has done peace walks across Africa. 'The campaign started in January 2022. I was walking for peace and stability on our continent.
