Proposed Finas Act amendment aligns with technological advancements

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed amendment to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) Act 1981 was among the matters discussed during a meeting held yesterday between Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, his deputy Teo Nie Ching, and Finas members.
In a Facebook post tonight, Teo said the proposed amendment to the Act was an important step to keep pace with the evolving technological landscape and current trends in digital content production.
"With the commitment and cooperation of all parties, I am confident that the country's creative industry can grow in a more rapid, inclusive and sustainable manner.
"Finas will continue to play an important role in building an ecosystem that supports local talent, drives innovation and elevates Malaysia as a respected regional content hub," she said.
The meeting was also attended by Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
Teo, in the same post, also congratulated the remarkable success of Ejen Ali The Movie 2, which has now been officially recognised as the highest-grossing animated film in Malaysian film history.
She also extended her congratulations to the drama series Bidaah, which has recorded more than 2.5 billion views on digital platforms and social media.

Mistaken for mother and son, couple prove love knows no age

KUANTAN: To some outsiders, they looked like mother and son. However, to 29-year-old Mohamad Nazir Annuar, Salmah Jaya is not only his wife but also his source of strength, joy and emotional companionship. The 61-year-old mother of seven captured his heart years ago and despite a 32-year age gap, they tied the knot in April 2022 with blessings from both sides of the family. Their relationship, which began through Facebook in 2018, attracted attention after Mohamad Nazir shared a video of their affectionate moments. Many mistook Salmah for his mother or aunt, with some even questioning the authenticity of their relationship. "That is something we have become used to whenever we go out together," he said, acknowledging the curious stares and reactions from strangers. "But I am never ashamed. She is my wife and I love her deeply." Nazir, who works as a catering crew member on an oil rig, said his attraction had always leaned towards older women. Still, it was not easy winning Salmah over. She ignored his friend request for a long time and even blocked him after he managed to get her number. It took years and persistent effort before she finally agreed to meet him in 2021. Their bond grew stronger over time as they discovered shared interests, including a fondness for the colour red and the mystical. The decision to marry came a year later. While Nazir's family had no objections, the initial resistance came from Salmah's children, who were uncomfortable with the significant age gap. "Eventually, they relented because they did not want to see their mother unhappy," he said. For Salmah, marriage was not something she had considered after her husband passed away from a heart attack in 2016. She was content living alone and even rejected advances from other men over the years, many of them in their 30s and 40s. But Nazir's determination softened her stance. "What touched me most was when he braved the floods on a motorcycle just to see me," Salmah said. While they acknowledge their relationship is unconventional, both say their bond is built on mutual respect and sincerity. "I once asked him if he ever felt embarrassed walking beside me, and he said there was nothing to be ashamed of," Salmah said. Though they faced comments and criticism, particularly online, Nazir remains grounded. "This is Allah's will. I know who I married and have never regretted it." The couple also faced heartbreak when Salmah had a miscarriage during their first year of marriage but say they now focus on finding peace and happiness in each other's presence. "I just want to be the best husband I can be," Nazir said. "And I pray that our marriage continues to be blessed."

The Ballad of Kajang Prison – Of Bossku's solo birthday bash

HEMMED in by prison walls He cuts a forlorn figure Sitting on his bed of plank With nary a thought of joy To lighten his heavy heart. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Melaka Daily (@melakadaily) Oh! How I wish to gaze the sky And breathe its air of pure freedom! Now he shakes his head in gloom To remember thus all those years Of unbridled power and kingly cash. Brought down by pitiless law He spends days and nights Ruminating his luckless fate When once life for him an endless Parties of birthday bliss. Birthday? Ah! Something clicks In his mind as he looks up To see on the grimy wall A note he scribbles reminding Him today was he born! Then footsteps he hears A warder outside his dingy cell A rattling noise he makes As he thrusts something Through a small opening. Happy birthday Bossku DS @NajibRazak may Allah SWT bless you always 23 Julai 2025#1Malaysia — BrotherBatu Return (@morasaki12) July 23, 2025 In the patch of light so dim He barely makes out a small Cake served on a banana leaf With some words scrawled Carelessly across the soft top. Hari jadi Bossku! He looks aghast At this spongy thing he thinks A cruel joke played on him For in all his festive gatherings Never did he bite a banana cake. 🤣🤣🤣 Birthday Najib la today(23rd July) Madani punya bodoh sebab ada boot lickers ramai sampai announcement pun pathetically timed🤣🤣🤣 — Rudelyawken (@rudelyawken) July 23, 2025 Oh! How he craves those yummy Butter cakes with all those Chocolate icing richly laid With small cute candles For him to blow come every year. Now with mournful eyes he stares This bare banana cake for him To usher in his 72th milestone With no friends or family members To share some watered-down fun. — Eric SeeTo Lim Sian See (@LimSianSeeEric) July 23, 2025 He bestirs a force uncontrollable Swelling up in him bringing Tears to his tired eyes His trembling voice on the verge Of giving vent to his feelings. He looks all around him As if seeking human companionship But only espies one lonely Figure standing before him 'Tis his shadow on the wall. Then the dam bursts his low Sound from his throat Breaks forth a song To his shadow he sings: Happy birthday to you! He lays himself on his rough bed Fixes his swollen eyes on the ceiling A birthday wish he must make Slowly he forms his words: To home! To early home! – July 27, 2025 Phlip Rodrigues is a retired journalist. The views expressed are solely of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Focus Malaysia. Finas committed to take local talents to international stage

Finas chairman Datuk Hans Isaac said the achievements of local actors in the foreign film industry are gaining prominence and need to be supported comprehensively. Photo: Hand Isaac/Instagram The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) is committed to boosting the presence of local talents and works at the international level through various strategic initiatives, including support funds, participation in world film festivals and cross-government agency collaboration. Its chairman Datuk Hans Isaac said the achievements of local actors in the foreign film industry are gaining prominence and need to be supported comprehensively to become a catalyst for the development of the country's creative industry. "Finas is very proud and fully supports the success of local production companies and individual talents who have succeeded in penetrating the international market. This success proves that our creative industry can be accepted and compete at the international level," he said. He added that among the main initiatives provided by Finas are the Creative Content Fund (DKK), Film In Malaysia Incentive (FIMI), human capital development funds and international market participation funds, as well as promotions and facilities for high-potential works. Hans said Finas also provides international synergy routes through participation in major world film festivals and markets such as Cannes, Berlinale and Busan, as well as establishing collaborations with agencies such as the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), embassies and foreign agencies as facilitators for local industry players. He said the long-term goal is to produce more successors to international industry figures such as Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding, as well as behind-the-scene professionals. Among the local talents currently stealing attention abroad is young actor Irfan Zaini who has the opportunity to star in a film in India with the country's famous star, Vijay, thus making him one of Malaysia's new faces on the global stage. Irfan, who was previously active on the local screen, described cross-country collaborations as the best space to gain experience and bring Malaysia's name to a higher level in the film world. Commenting on the development, Hans described Irfan's success as a tribute to the industry and a testament to the abilities of local people if given the opportunity and support. "I hope Irfan will take this opportunity to bring glory to the country's creative industry and be an example to other industry players. Finas is very proud of his achievements," he said. – Bernama
