Good Morning Britain's Ed Balls sparks outrage as he calls out co-star's weight live on air
Good Morning Britain 's Ed Balls left his colleagues taken aback with a remark about Charlotte Hawkins' weight during a live broadcast.
The 58-year-old presenter, known for stirring up heated debates on the ITV morning show, was cautioned by his GMB co-stars this time around.
Following Melvin Odoom 's conclusion of the entertainment news on Tuesday, Ed and Charlotte were amused by a throwback clip showcasing one of her initial TV gigs, leaving her blushing as she was surprised by producers.
Charlotte had featured in a fashion piece on This Morning and jokingly remarked, "There's a reason why people don't see that."
Ed then asked the audience, "Has Charlotte aged well or badly?" reports the Mirror.
He complimented her, saying, "I think you've aged beautifully; you almost look younger now than then."
However, he followed up with a less flattering comment, "Back then, you were a bit more podgy," while motioning towards his face and chin.
Despite Charlotte taking it in stride with laughter, Melvin interjected with a cautionary, "Ed, move on!"
Viewers expressed their disbelief, with one commenting, "Did Ed really just say Charlotte looked fat when she was younger? Has he looked in the mirror lately? He's so rude."
Another viewer predicted, "He'll be up in front of the producers for that quip."
Charlotte has been a staple on GMB since 2020, delivering news updates and frequently filling in for Susanna Reid.
Earlier in the year, she surprised her fans by disclosing her age as 50, receiving support from admirers and colleagues alike when she shared her ambition to write a book.
She felt that nearing "50 years on this earth fast approaching" was "the right time to try to make [her] childhood dream a reality".
"You'd definitely write best-selling FICTION because no way are you 50??? Can't wait to read the book and celebrate with you – happy birthday, gorgeous!" Kate Garraway commented.
One admirer remarked, "Happy birthday, Charlotte. You do not look 50. Have a fabulous day, and many happy returns for Friday."
"I'm sure you'll be a literary success, 50! You still look 30," another person chimed in.

TV couple Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty announce separation
They wed in September 2012 at a ceremony in Rome and have two children together. They said in a joint statement to the PA news agency: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley, pictured in 2017, said they remain 'united as loving parents' (Ian West/PA) 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. 'There will be no further comment.' Deeley, 48, has hosted ITV's This Morning alongside Ben Shephard since early last year, and previously lived in Los Angeles for more than 10 years. She also previously co-hosted BBC singing contest Fame Academy, alongside Kielty, and took over ITV's Stars In Their Eyes from Matthew Kelly.
