Trail Blazers foundation gives $100K towards school grants
Thirteen scholarships will be shared throughout 12 counties in Oregon and Washington.
Blazers Foundation Executive Director and Trail Blazers Vice President of Community Programs, Annie Klug, said, 'We're excited to once again distribute school grants across Oregon and Southwest Washington to invest in youth where they live, learn, and play.'
She continued, 'These schools and the amazing people behind their programs have an incredible impact on our youth. We can't wait to see the positive impact these grants will have on current and future students.'
The grants will also go towards the communities surrounding the school districts, supporting athletics, arts, and a variety of academic programs.
Thirteen school representatives were welcomed into the Moda Center on April 6 for a pregame celebration with Trail Blazers employees and Foundation Board members.

Former NBA Star Throws Shade at Rockets' Kevin Durant
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After some rough years, people across Southeast Texas are getting stoked about NBA basketball again. The Houston Rockets traded for future Hall of Fame forward Kevin Durant this summer, and their fans are thinking world championship. However, there are also reasons for fans to be concerned about the Rockets' championship aspirations. While they have some good role players and complementary players, both young and experienced, starting point guard Fred VanVleet isn't exactly an efficient shooter, and one has to wonder exactly how much young wing Amen Thompson will improve. Former NBA All-Star guard Jeff Teague expressed another possible concern for Houston. He threw some serious shade at Durant during an appearance on the "Club 520 Podcast" by saying he doesn't think the one-time MVP has the ability to considerably elevate a team. "You know how I feel about Kevin Durant, I think he's one of the best players ever, but I don't think he has the ability to take a questionable team and elevate them dudes to a certain level," Teague claimed. Read more: Report: Heat, Nets Pull Off Surprising NBA Late-Offseason Trade Teague's claim may seem a bit provocative, but there is some probable cause to support it. Durant spent his early years on some talented Oklahoma City Thunder teams that were perennial title contenders. But despite having Russell Westbrook by his side, as well as James Harden for three seasons, Durant couldn't deliver a Larry O'Brien Trophy to the Sooner State. When he went to the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 along with Kyrie Irving, it was thought that they had just assembled the NBA's next great superteam. But in two seasons and change together, Durant and Irving won just one playoff series. The superstar forward's next stop was the Phoenix Suns, where he was surrounded by Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. But in three postseasons with Durant, the Suns also won just one series. In fact, they got swept in the first round of the 2024 playoffs and didn't even reach the play-in tournament this past season. When Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in 2016, they instantly won back-to-back championships, and in both years, Durant was the NBA Finals MVP. In the 2017 finals, they defeated the same LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers team they had coughed up the title against the previous year. The following year, they came back from a 3-2 deficit in the Western Conference finals to beat back the Houston Rockets, as Durant produced 34 points. Twenty-one of those 34 points came in the second half as Golden State overcame a double-digit deficit to win by nine points. Read more: Boston Celtics Sign Son of Chicago Bulls Legend It is likely that had Durant never come to the Bay Area, the Warriors would've gone home empty-handed both years. But all that is moot now. Durant has a new opportunity as his prime years wind down, and he has an opportunity to enhance his legacy and prove doubters such as Teague wrong. Trail Blazers' Yang Hansen will wear a new jersey number in the NBA
Chinese center Yang Hansen will wear a new jersey number in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers after previously wearing No. 15 with the Qingdao Eagles. Yang was an All-Star in each of the past two seasons in the CBA, the top professional league in China. He averaged 16.6 points, 10.5 rebounds, three assists and 2.6 blocks in 32.8 minutes per game across 45 appearances last season. The 16th pick also occupied No. 51 while representing the Chinese national team, most recently in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers. When choosing his new number, it appears that Yang simply opted to honor his draft position this year. Yang averaged 10.8 points, five rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 blocks on 45.7% shooting from the field in four appearances with the Trail Blazers in summer league. He scored in double figures three times, including a 15-point effort on July 15. The 7-footer is highly touted for his overall skill set and ability as a player who can work down low, space the floor and protect the paint. The Trail Blazers have had him on their radar for the past two years and believe he can be a player who contributes at a high level on both sides of the court. Yang has already made quite an impression on teammates Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard, with both intrigued by his potential on the court. His selection was met with some criticism, but it is evident that the organization is very high on him and excited to see him next season. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA. Timberwolves release 2025-2026 regular season schedule; will open on the road
The Minnesota Timberwolves dropped their schedule for the 2025-2026 season on Thursday, revealing they will start the regular season on the road. For the first time in team history, the Wolves will begin a season on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers. That game is scheduled for 9 p.m. CST on Oct. 22. Their next game on Oct. 24 will also be away from home, when the Timberwolves take on the Los Angeles Lakers, whom they defeated in the Western Conference First Round NBA Playoffs just months ago. Minnesota will then open its home portion of the regular season on Oct. 26 against the Eastern Conference Champion Indiana Pacers. The schedule features 28 nationally televised games. Of those games, seven will air on ESPN and Prime, six on NBC, four on ABC and four on Peacock, according to the team. Other highlights of Minnesota's schedule include a game on Christmas at the Denver Nuggets, marking the team's second straight and fourth-ever game on the holiday. Last Christmas, the Wolves beat the Dallas Mavericks 105-99. The full 80-game schedule can be found on the Timberwolves' website. Last month, the Wolves announced a deal with former Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid. The team also finalized a contract to keep Julius Randle with the franchise through the 2027-28 season. With the re-signings of Reid and Randle, the Wolves will largely be running it back next season after consecutive Western Conference finals appearances. The Wolves also added two more big men in the draft: 6-foot-11 Frenchman Joan Beringer and 7-foot-2 Australian Rocco Zikarsky. Longtime Timberwolves owners Glen Taylor and his wife Becky said goodbye to the team in June after the NBA approved the $1.5 billion sale of the franchise to an investment group led by Marc Lore and Alex Bettin contributed to this report.
