Surgeon: Texas junk food bill a step in the right direction

Yahooa day ago

(NewsNation) — Lawmakers in Texas are taking more steps to make the state 'healthy again.'
A new bill that was passed unanimously by the state legislature would require junk food like Doritos and Skittles to come with a warning label. The bill is now at Gov. Greg Abbott's desk.
Dr. Evan Nadler, a surgeon and founder of Pro-Care Consultants, told NewsNation that any effort to make American food better and healthier is one that everyone should be behind.

'That's why it was a unanimously supported bill,' Nadler said. 'Forcing the food industry to rethink how they color foods or how some foods are manufactured. It's certainly a welcome step in the right direction.'
Nadler said putting warning labels on foods could actually lead to consumers making better healthier choices, and pointed to sugar, sweet and beverage taxes that are in effect in certain cities across the U.S. and European countries. He added, however, that they have only had a small impact on the consumption of junk foods.
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 40% of adults in the U.S. have obesity, and more than 19% of children in the country ages 2 to 19 have obesity. Nadler said it'll take a multi-pronged approach, aside from warning labels on foods, to tackle the issue and make people in America healthier.
Low levels of lead exposure may worsen academic performance: Study
'Changing food quality, policy and making exercise more available helps,' Nadler said. 'The reality is that for a lot of people, those have been tried and they don't really do enough.'
Nadler added that medications and interventions to help with health issues related to obesity need to be more affordable and widely available to people.

Finland's AIATELLA secures funds for AI cardiovascular imaging solutions

Finnish startup AIATELLA has raised €2m ($2.27m) in financing to develop and scale its cardiovascular imaging technology powered by AI. The investment will support the company in conducting clinical trials and further developing its ultrasound-based preventative screening tool, which can identify and quantify carotid artery narrowing within minutes. Nordic Science Investments spearheaded the funding round, with contributions from Specialist VC, Business Finland, and Harjavalta Ventures, among other investors. The Automated Image Measurement technology of the startup leverages images from ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to analyse vascular imaging. This multimodal technology identifies abnormalities and quantifies changes over time in those at risk. It significantly reduces the time specialists spend on manual image measurements and documentation. As a result, clinicians can dedicate more time to patient care. AIATELLA is currently navigating the medical approval processes in several European and North American countries, including France, the US, and the UK. AIATELLA co-founder and CEO Jack Parker said: 'Our technology helps medical professionals analyse imaging much more efficiently, and at an earlier stage, so patients can get help before it's too late.' Initially applied to the aorta artery, AIATELLA's vision extends to encompass all blood vessels in the body with its technology. The startup noted that it is also developing a portable ultrasound-based screening technology for mass screening of individuals prior to the occurrence of symptoms. This approach aims to facilitate early detection of cardiovascular diseases, which are a major cause of mortality worldwide. The technology has already been employed in the UK and Finland at screening events, where it has helped identify potentially at-risk individuals. AIATELLA also aims to gather data on the presentation and progression of cardiovascular conditions across different sexes and ethnicities, as symptoms can vary widely among these different groups. "Finland's AIATELLA secures funds for AI cardiovascular imaging solutions" was originally created and published by Medical Device Network, a GlobalData owned brand. Peeing frequently at night? Here's what that could mean, according to health experts.

Peeing frequently at night? Here's what that could mean, according to health experts. Show Caption Hide Caption What causes urinary tract infections? A UTI is an infection of your bladder, kidneys or the tubes that connect them, typically caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. Cover Media - Shareable It's 2 a.m., and you know the blinding light you just flickered on to use the bathroom is about to ruin your sleep. But when you've got to go, you've got to. Nocturia, known colloquially as frequent nighttime urination, is common. More than 50 million people in the U.S. suffer, according to the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Library of Medicine. And roughly half of adults over the age of 65 have reported getting up at least once every night to use the bathroom. "Waking up to urinate can either be a warning sign or an actual sign of a health issue you may not be aware of or a health issue that is not being properly treated," Dr. Justin Dubin, a urologist and men's health specialist at Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida and a co-host of the Man Up podcast, tells USA TODAY. First, let's be clear about how nighttime urination is actually counted. Nocturia refers to urinating after a period of sleep, so simply heading to the bathroom after sundown doesn't count. Nocturia can be caused by a number of factors, including sleep disorders, excessive urine production, problems with bladder capacity and hormonal issues, per NIH. Sometimes, waking up to go to the bathroom is just waking up to go to the bathroom. But how do you know when it's an issue worth bringing up to a doctor? Here's what medical professionals say. Is your pee cloudy? Here's what medical experts say that could mean. How many times is it normal to urinate at night? Waking up once a night every once in a while is usually OK, Dubin says. But you should generally be able to sleep six to eight hours without having to do so. "Consistently waking up two or more times every night? That is considered abnormal," he adds. If you feel like you fit the description of nocturia, it may be worth it to take stock of how much fluid you're consuming two hours before bedtime, "especially alcohol and caffeine," which are both diuretics, meaning they make you urinate more frequently, Dubin notes. Hmm: Certain foods can cause changes in urine, but so can medical conditions. Know the signs. Why am I peeing so much? Frequent nighttime urination can sometimes be an indicator of further health issues, experts say. Sometimes it isn't; Certain medications that are classified as diuretics, such as water pills, some heart medications and lithium can be the culprit. If that's the case, you can ask your doctor if you'd benefit from taking the medication in the morning, rather than right before bed. But even if your nocturia isn't a warning sign for other health issues, the loss of sleep is likely enough reason to seek help. "It is worth bringing up to your doctor, especially if it bothers you," Dubin says. "There are a lot of possible causes for you to be waking up at night and talking to your doctor will allow them to appropriately evaluate your history, your lifestyle and your overall health to see what is causing you to wake up at night. If you have specific health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure or prostate issues, the solution to your problem is treating your health issues." Health experts will typically recommend patients try a mix of behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes and medication to relieve significant nocturia, according to the NIH. "Like anything with your health, if something feels off or bothers you, it's important you go talk with a doctor," Dubin says. "Remember, we can't help you if you don't come in to talk with us."
