Harry Potter fans only now spot 'major flaw' in one of series' biggest moments

Daily Mirror7 days ago
Harry Potter fans believe they have discovered a "major flaw" in the series, with the rules of a game featured heavily in the early books from J.K. Rowling picked apart by Potterheads
A "major flaw" has been found by fans of Harry Potter, who think one of the series' biggest moments is lacking. The Daniel Radcliffe -starring series spanned eight films and HBO are set to revive the J.K. Rowling book series with a remake, but fans are wondering whether a "huge error" will be rectified in the upcoming HBO remake.

Harry Potter fans took to Reddit to discuss the issue, which can be traced all the way back to the books. An "unpopular opinion" was posted to the r/HarryPotter subreddit, where fans believe they have uncovered a huge problem with the fictional game, Quidditch.

The game Quidditch appears in the Harry Potter series frequently, and features two teams of wizards attempting to score points by netting various balls in three hoops. But the Golden Snitch, a crucial plot element and part of the fictional game, has some detractors.
One user wrote: "The rule/function of the golden snitch in Quidditch is stupid and completely ruins what would otherwise be an awesome sport to watch.
"Imagine if in basketball each team had a player out in the parking lot trying to catch a frog for the win. You're watching a great gamer that's been neck and neck and then suddenly the buzzer sounds halfway through. 'The game is over, Ramirez has just got the parking lot frog.'"

It's a sentiment shared by some of Harry Potter's biggest fans. One user wrote: "Not unpopular, just true, quidditch is designed as a mock sport."
Another fumed: "It fit the early series much better, back when it was more of a fairy tale world and hadn't become too self-serious with its world building."

A third shared: "Back when the books were aiming to be more whimsy than realistic, Quidditch was designed as a mockery of sports. Hence, how ridiculous it functions as a game."
Despite the apparent mockery of sports, Quidditch initially proved popular with fans of the series. Other fans were keen to point out that, while catching the Golden Snitch would end the game, it was not necessarily an automatic win.
One user wrote: "You don't win if you get the snitch. It's 150 points. It's to balance the game out if you are getting slaughtered.
"The game ends when it's caught. It's strategy to hold off catching it in some cases."
Another added: "Unpopular opinion: this is how basketball already feels. Two teams just take turns being in the lead and eventually the timer runs out and the team whose turn it was to be in the lead at that moment wins. It's like a two-hour game of eeny-meany-meiny-moe."
A third wrote: "But overall you're correct, it was designed this way for story purposes; any other sport it would be silly to think a 6th grader could play a physical sport with high schoolers and contribute to wins."

Survivor's Jeff Probst drops bombshell on White Lotus cameo after creator's surprise return to competition show

Survivor host and executive producer Jeff Probst has revealed whether he'll make a cameo in Mike White's hit HBO series The White Lotus. The 63-year-old TV presenter recently caused a stir when he announced that White Lotus creator Mike, 55 — who was Survivor's season 37 runner-up — will reappear on season 50 next spring. In the past, the California-bred filmmaker has given his Survivor co-stars small roles on the stirring drama. As for Jeff, he wants no parts, telling The Hollywood Reporter that fans should not expect to see him on HBO. 'No, Mike should never put me on White Lotus. I really love the cameos and how he uses people. And I think that, too, speaks to Mike as a person,' he said to the outlet. Producers raised eyebrows in May when it was announced that The White Lotus creator Mike was recast for season 50 after he came in second place on season 37 in 2018 And the beloved host explained exactly why he's excited for Mike's return. 'He's arguably the single best storyteller we've ever had on Survivor,' he told the outlet. 'Mike is one of the most peculiar and loving people I've ever met. He's so authentic. He does exactly what he wants on his terms, and the results clearly speak for themselves,' he added. Unlike viewers and Hollywood's A-listers, Jeff said he understands why Mike wanted to join the Survivor cast again, despite his massive success. 'I think that's part of why he does it — he's out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what's going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor, you can study it,' he reasoned. He noted, 'And when you watch White Lotus, what are you watching? You're watching human behavior all day. 'I think that's part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don't understand that, maybe you're asking the wrong question.' In late May Jeff unveiled the 24 returning contestants for the Fiji-set 50th season of the CBS reality competition, which will premiere in 2026. Fans expressed disappointment that none of the all-stars were selected from seasons 19-31 as five competed in seasons 48-49 and 11 others appeared on the past five seasons. 'Too many new era players,' Instagram user @stagesofcj commented. 'Not enough early and middle era.' Instagram user @zacharyreality could not believe season 45 champ Dee Valladares and season 48 champ Kyle Fraser were brought back, writing: 'Why cast two recent winners?' And someone else wrote on X, 'I can't be the only one who thinks that the Mike White pick is a ploy by Jeff to try and draw in the White Lotus crowd, no?' Others were upset over the casting of two mystery competitors from season 49, which wrapped earlier this year and will air in the fall.

And Just Like That return hopes dashed by key plot as disappointed fans fume

Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That is ending after three seasons with fans left disappointed at the direction the show was taken in after return to screens Sex and the City spin off And Just Like That is ending after three seasons with the finale due to air next week. The last ever episode will see Sarah Jessica Parker finally say farewell to Carrie Bradshaw for good following a shock announcement from showrunner Michael Patrick King. ‌ Fans were left surprised by the announcement despite the show regularly facing a backlash from viewers who slammed it as "the worst show on television." ‌ Audiences were left divided over the reboot which launched in 2021 due to the storylines that saw huge changes for the beloved SATC characters, including Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) who cheated on her husband Steve Brady with non-binary comic Che Diaz, and Carrie calling the iconic love of her life Mr. Big a "mistake" as she rekindled her past romance with Aidan Shaw. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025. ‌ Kim Cattrall's absence as fan-favourite character Samantha Jones also left a bad taste in viewers mouths, as Kim stayed away from the project due to a decade long rift with her former castmates. The areas in which the show was lacking left the production unable to continue according to sources. One insider told the Daily Mail: "HBO was happy to ride with the show for a few more years. Everyone was indebted to Sarah [Jessica Parker] and wanted the story she wanted to be told to go to completion. Decision makers felt like they owed it to Sarah and the rest of the cast and crew." ‌ TV tracker Samba TV reported that just 429,000 households streamed the season three premiere of AJLT in the four days following its debut – which was a seven percent decline from the season two premiere. The series premiere four years ago saw 1.1 million households tune in. However, the show suffered due to its "woke" storylines according to another insider. The source said: "Sex and the City is about women talking about dating men, their penis sizes and what the sex was like. Of course, they're getting older, but it's not like you don't still have sex with men and talk about their penises. People weren't connecting with the show." People struggled to get get on board with Miranda's new found romance with Che, who described themselves as a "queer non-binary Mexican Irish diva." ‌ The character was branded the "worst" on the series, with some viewers suggesting they were "[setting] back non-binary representation 70 years." When her romance with Che ended after Sara Ramirez was axed from the show Cynthia continued to pursue sexual encounters with other females as a single woman. The insider added: "Cynthia's plot continued to destroy the show. It sucked. Let's be honest, most people didn't watch after that first episode." ‌ Since the shock announcement of the show ending Parker paid tribute to Carrie in a lengthy Instagram post which highlighted some of her favorite memories of Carrie. She shared: "Crossed streets, avenues, rubicons, so it seemed. She broke hearts, heels, habits. She loved, lost, won, tripped, leaped. Fell short and into puddles. Aged. Got wiser. She has made the hardest worst and best decisions. "Traveled near and far. For the new. The vintage. Friends and love. Changed homes, time zones, boyfriends, her mind, her shoes, her hair, but never her love and devotion to New York City. She had dates, drinks, boyfriends. A husband and truly great loves and romances. She hailed cabs. She ran in heels. And danced with Stanford. She told the truth and she lied. ‌ "She typed. Wondered. Wrote. Published. Grieved. Forgave. Got stood up. Stood strong. Stood out. She devoted herself to hats, books, shoes, friends and the promise of a new day in her beloved city and the people she treasured most. She has worn shame, pride, honor, optimism and literally countless dresses, skirts, tutus. "Held onto hands, hopes and the very best of people. Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, there will never be better friends and what great fortune for Carrie to come to know and love Seema and LTW, most divine new connections. ‌ "Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all. I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion. Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt. To you all. "MPK and I together recognized, as we have in the past, this chapter complete. AJLT was all joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us." She concluded: "I am better for every single day I spent with you. It will be forever before I forget the whole thing. Thank you all. I love you so. I hope you love these final two episodes as much as we all do. Rabbit rabbit. Xxx, SJ."
