Lewis Hamilton subject of scathing comment by ex-Ferrari F1 chief

Mattia Binotto was Ferrari team principal before Frederic Vasseur and previously spent more than 20 years serving the iconic Italian F1 team, but is now leading the Audi project A former Ferrari chief has told the Italian team that they signed Lewis Hamilton"when he was already at the end of his career". Mattia Binotto hopes to see his former outfit succeed but suggested he didn't agree with the decision to sign Hamilton as a 40-year-old. It has been a difficult season so far for the Brit, despite the early high of a maiden Ferrari victory in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race. He later added a podium in the second Sprint of the year in Miami, but his Grand Prix results have been underwhelming. ‌ His best Sunday result so far in 2025 was fourth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, a superb comeback drive which delighted the Tifosi gathered at Imola. But it has been difficult other than that and, after finishing sixth in Barcelona last time out, the seven-time F1 champion said it was one of the worst races he had experienced. ‌ Hamilton also said the problem is "probably just me", hinting that he might himself be worrying about whether he remains at the top of his game. He turned 40 in January and will be nearly 42 by the end of the 2026 campaign, for which he is already contracted. And former Ferrari team principal Binotto said he thinks the Brit's age is a problem. "Hamilton is of a certain age. Ferrari took him when he was already at the end of his career. The ideal would have been to have him a few years earlier," he told Italian publication Automoto. Binotto was axed by Ferari at the end of the 2022 season after four years as team principal. It brought to an end nearly 30 years of his service to the Maranello squad, having joined in 1995 as an engineer and worked his way up the ranks. He then briefly served as interim team principal earlier this year until Jonathan Wheatley started work on April 1, and is now the official head of the whole project, leading the Audi outfit alongside Wheatley. ‌ Binotto still wants to see his former employer do well as both an ex-employee and an Italian F1 fan. And, despite his obvious misgivings about Hamilton, the 55-year-old said he still has faith that the Scuderia can get back on track. He said: "From the outside, perhaps one shouldn't even judge. It's clear that the performance on the track and the results are not good at the moment. "However, I know every single member of that team very well and I know that they are good, strong and capable. They will be able to improve the car and do well in the future and I believe that Ferrari can get some satisfaction this year."

Viktor Gyokeres 'to go on strike' to force transfer after Sporting agreement

Viktor Gyokeres has been left frustrated by current club Sporting CP as he looks to depart amid interest from Arsenal and Manchester United as clubs around Europe eye the forward Viktor Gyokeres has threatened to go on strike after Sporting CP reneged on a gentleman's agreement over a transfer for the Swedish striker. Gyokeres is said to have informed the Portuguese club's hierarchy as much after they increased their transfer fee demands. The 27-year-old sharpshooter helped Sporting to a league and cup double after scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances in 2024/25. Gyokeres has developed an impressive reputation after moving to Lisbon from Coventry City. ‌ Reports in Portugal claim that Gyokeres has been left furious having already insisted he would depart the club this summer and will not play for the side again. Player and club had an agreement that Gyokeres would be allowed to leave for significantly less than his release clause. ‌ It appears Sporting have honoured that but they are now demanding more than the £50million plus £8.4m in add-ons Gyokeres expected. Record report the club have instead demanded £67m. The ex-Brighton ace has already turned down the prospect of a move to Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal saw a £55m offer rejected but Gyokeres has rebuffed an annual salary of £30m as he wants to continue to compete in Europe. Manchester United and Arsenal are among the sides linked with making a move for Gyokeres. The Gunners are the star forward's preference if he gets his pick of teams this summer. Sporting believe that Gyokeres' inclination would be to pick Arsenal and the Premier League over interest from Spain and Italy. A move to United meanwhile would see a reunion with Ruben Amorim with the Red Devils intent on bolstering their forward line having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Gunners' focus appears to be on getting a deal for Benjamin Sesko over the line over Gyokeres however. RB Leipzig director Marcel Schafer has already held discussions with Arsenal chief Andrea Berta over a move and talks are now beginning to gather pace. ‌ Gyokeres has been tight-lipped publicly on his plans. Asked about his future after Sporting's final game of the season, he said: 'Let's see. "It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Gyokeres has already removed all reference to Sporting from his Instagram bio. Though, he has also taken down mention of Sweden's national team and his sponsor, Nike.

Liverpool hero's agent admits ex-Reds star would love Anfield return this summer

While attention remains firmly placed on whether move can be sealed for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot remains in the market for a new assistant after John Heitinga's departure Dirk Kuyt would love to rejoin Liverpool as Arne Slot's assistant manager but his agent has ruled out the prospect of the Anfield cult hero replacing John Heitinga as the head coach's key lieutenant. Slot is in the market for a new assistant coach after Heitinga last week became the new boss at Ajax and that prompted speculation that former forward Kuyt could step in - having previously had a chance to work as an assistant under the Reds chief while at AZ Alkmaar. ‌ However Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen has said the move will not happen. ‌ 'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.' In a conversation on Peter Crouch's podcast earlier this season Kuyt confirmed he turned down Slot's offer at Alkmaar. 'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ,' Kuyt said. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now. "But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.' Kuyt, currently in charge of Belgian top flight side Beerschot, spent six seasons at Liverpool, scoring 71 times in 285 appearances. But his only piece of silverware was a League Cup. ‌ Among the other names linked with replacing Heitinga are Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant at AZ and Feyenoord and last month said farewell to Shakhtar Donetsk. Etienne Reijnen, the current Feyenoord assistant, was in contention for a role last summer but there were reported issues with his work permit. Liverpool have already had an active start to the off-season with Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement, while Milos Kerkez is close to being signed from Bournemouth and talks continue with Leverkusen around star man Florian Wirtz over a British record deal that could end up being worth £125m.
