Man Utd transfer news: Hojlund, Sancho and Garnacho exits stall as Donnarumma plea made
Manchester United began their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on Sunday – and while there were many new faces, the same old issues reared their head once more.
Despite spending £200million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, United failed to find the back of David Raya 's net. Meanwhile, their issues in between the posts continued, with Altay Bayindir at the centre of a debate on Monday after his error for Riccardo Calafiori's goal.
Thankfully, there are still two weeks left of the summer transfer window for Ruben Amorim and his staff to address some of those issues. The problem for United is that they need to sell some of their unwanted players first before they can bring in more reinforcements.
Unfortunately, there are many moving parts as they try to find new homes for the bomb squad players who have been exiled by Amorim. Here is the latest on those exits – and who could come in.
Hojlund exit complicated
Rasmus Hojlund was conspicuous through his absence on Sunday as we got a look at United's new-look forward line. Hojlund was left out of the squad entirely by Amorim and the club are now hoping to sell him before the window closes.
They are willing to take a significant hit on the £72million they paid Atalanta a few years ago for his services. And yet things are not that simple, with AC Milan keen but not that keen. United want around £35m for the young Danish striker, but would also consider a loan at this late stage of the window.
Milan, however, have Juventus ' Dusan Vlahovic as their top target, although those negotiations have reached a stalemate. Everything is up in the air, as Milan sporting director Igli Tare said: 'Hojlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about him, but in the transfer market, you never know what could happen.'
Sancho and Garnacho delays
Jadon Sancho is another player United are desperate to get rid of, but his £250,000-a-week wages are proving problematic. After moves to Juventus and Fenerbahce fell through, it is now the turn of Roma to get frustrated.
The Italian club are threatening to pull out of a deal for the winger, despite agreeing a loan with an obligation to buy. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Sancho has informed Roma he is exploring other options. He has reportedly said no to Besiktas, where there would be a reunion with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the situation looks set to run until the end of the window.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho also remains a United player. Chelsea are keen on the winger, but need to first sell Christopher Nkunku to Bayern Munich. The German side have failed with a loan bid for Nkunku because the Blues want a permanent deal so they can sign either Garnacho or Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
Utd urged to hijack Donnarumma deal
Gianluigi Donnarumma has reportedly agreed terms with Manchester City and is now waiting for Ederson to move to Galatasaray. However, Bayindir's shocker on Sunday, and Andre Onana's general struggles at United, have raised the prospect of Donnarumma moving to a different part of Manchester.
United enquired earlier in the summer about Donnarumma and Wayne Rooney believes they should try to hijack City's move. He said on his podcast: "Donnarumma, I think he's 26, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him."

Paul Merson 'cannot believe' Chelsea aren't trying to sign £60m star this summer
Paul Merson says Chelsea's attack are 'predictable' in their current guise and he 'cannot believe' the club have not been in the race for Eberechi Eze this summer. Chelsea got their season off to a disappointing start as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace, despite spending in excess of £230million on new signings in the transfer market. It could have been worse for the Blues after Eze fired home a superb 13th-minute free-kick at Stamford Bridge, only for the strike to be disallowed by VAR. Eze has been courted by several top teams throughout the course of the transfer window and the latest reports suggest Tottenham have reached a £60m agreement for the versatile 27-year-old. Arsenal have also been credited with a strong interest in Eze, but the Gunners are thought to have dropped their pursuit of Palace's FA Cup hero after Ethan Nwaneri decided to put pen to paper on a new contract. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. While Chelsea are not known to have held serious discussions for Eze, Merson feels the England international would be an ideal signing for the Club World Cup winners to help ease the pressure on Cole Palmer. 'I cannot believe Chelsea aren't going for Eberechi Eze. I really don't know what I am missing,' Merson – a lifelong Chelsea supporter – wrote in his Sky Sports column following the weekend's Premier League action. 'They buy winger after winger, but they need guile. They need more than Palmer. 'If you get Eze, you then have two players who can break teams down. 'They are predictable for me. They play with two quick wingers with Palmer trying to feed them.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Merson believes there were several 'worrying' signs in Chelsea's stalemate with Palace and Palmer needs far greater 'support' if the club are to challenge at the top of the table. 'Chelsea were not good against Crystal Palace. The draw was worrying,' the ex-Arsenal, Aston Villa and England man added. 'If Cole Palmer isn't going to break a team down, I'm not sure who is for Chelsea. 'Palmer is now the talk of the town in team talks up against Chelsea. Teams are trying to stop him because they think stop him, stop Chelsea. 'Stop Cole Palmer will be the message for West Ham on Friday. That's just how it is. 'He needs some support. If opposition teams pick him up and mark him well, I'm not sure what threat Chelsea have. Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens have pace, but they struggled to beat their defenders on Sunday.' According to Merson, it should not always be down to Palmer to make the breakthrough and Enzo Maresca will have to 'come up with solutions' ahead of Chelsea's trip to West Ham on Friday night. More Trending 'It's hard for Palmer. You've got have runners around when you get the ball and for me, he hasn't got those,' he continued. 'It's not just all on Palmer because Enzo Maresca has to come up with solutions too. 'He has to work out a way to get him the ball in areas where he can hurt teams. But for Palmer, patience is key. He has to wait for the ball a bit more instead of dropping deep to come and get it. 'You cannot hurt anybody on the halfway line. He needs the ball in and around the box where he's special.' Chelsea send message to Alejandro Garnacho over Manchester United transfer
Man Utd outcast Alejandro Garnacho is keen to join Chelsea (Picture: Getty) Chelsea have reiterated their desire to sign Alejandro Garnacho and told the Manchester United winger to be patient as they look to agree a deal before the transfer deadline. Despite an abundance of quality in the wide attacking areas, Chelsea are keen to welcome Garnacho to Stamford Bridge this summer. Garnacho accepts his United career is over after being included in Ruben Amorim's bomb squad and is hoping to seal a move to Chelsea. The Argentina winger always wanted to stay in the Premier League despite being banished by Amorim and play for a Champions League club. While both parties want the deal to happen, talks have stalled as Manchester United and Chelsea are a fair way apart in terms of Garnacho's valuation. Your ultimate guide to the football season Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The Red Devils want to raise around £50m from his sale but Chelsea value the player at around £30m. Garnacho may be tempted to consider other options during this stand-off but, according to talkSPORT, he has informed his friends he will be joining Chelsea. A picture of Garnacho outside Old Trafford was defaced (Picture: Getty) The 21-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea and is just waiting for those above him to strike a deal. It is also claimed Chelsea bosses have told Garnacho to be patient as they thrash out a deal with Manchester United and that they remain confident of making a breakthrough. Chelsea are fully aware that United are in a poor negotiating position given Amorim has made it clear Garnacho is no longer in his plans. Alejandro Garnacho, expert analysis 'Clubs try to leave things to the last minute sometimes, to strike a tough deal. But they need to be careful. Garnacho is a good player, and yes maybe they can drive his value down by waiting. 'However, I remember players at Tottenham who would have to wait until the very last day of the transfer window for Daniel Levy to let them leave for the biggest price. Daniel would always make sure he got what he wanted for players. There were big players he'd do this too. Gareth Bale and Luka Modric. Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas (Picture: Getty) 'So for Manchester United, they know when they will have to sell him, but they will also know when they want to just keep him, and I think that would be a mistake. There's still two weeks to find out – if it was me, I would try and get him out of the club before the last day of the transfer window because if they leave it too late, they may have to take an offer that they don't really want. 'I think Garnacho is a good player. Will he be a difference maker at Chelsea? I'm not sure, but he has lots of potential.' Former Premier League defender William Gallas speaking to GamblingZone Amorim told the winger to find a new club at the end of last season after growing frustrated with his performances and some off-field issues. Following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, Garnacho and his brother questioned Amorim's tactics, leaving the Old Trafford boss shocked and furious. Garnacho was then left out of United's pre-season tour to America before he was omitted from the matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Arsenal. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page It is not just Amorim who has lost patience with Garnacho but also a large section of the Old Trafford fan-base, with a picture of the player outside the stadium even defaced last week. Chelsea have spent around £250m on eight new signings so far this summer but are interested in Xavi Simons as well as Garnacho. Simons, too, has already approved the move but Chelsea are yet to meet RB Leipzig's valuation for the Netherlands international. More Trending While working on deals for Garnacho and Simons, Chelsea are keen to offload up to ten first-team players before the summer transfer window closes. Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Tyrique George are all available for sale. Club World Cup winners Chelsea began their 2025-26 Premier League campaign in underwhelming fashion, sharing a goalless draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca's side have three more London derbies coming up, starting with a trip to east London to face struggling West Ham on Friday night. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Man Utd lead race to sign former Arsenal target in £26m transfer
Manchester United have turned their attention to Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume in a bid to resolve their issues in midfield. Ruben Amorim is desperate to bring in another midfield option with United conceding defeat, for now at least, in their attempts to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton. A huge £100milling asking price has forced them to shelve their plans until next summer, having already spent over £200m rebuilding their attack. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro coped admirably against Arsenal in United's opening game of the season on Sunday but there is a worrying lack of depth with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo the manager's only other recognised options. Reports in Spain claim United are interested in signing Agoume and are 'leading the race' to sign the 23-year-old, according to Orgullo Biri. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The France Under-21 international has a release clause of €40million (£34.5m) but the report states Sevilla could be willing to do business for €30m (£26m). Other unnamed Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation. Arsenal were credited with interest in Agoume earlier this summer as a possible replacement for Thomas Partey before eventually signing Christian Norgaard having also brought in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Agoume made his professional debut with Sochaux at just 16 years old before moving to Inter Milan in 2018. He played just four times for the Italian giants, shipped out on loan to Spezia, Brest, Troyes and then Sevilla, who he joined in January 2024. Sevilla were suitably impressed to make the deal permanent last summer, managing to do so for less than €10m to sign Agoume in a deal that also included a 50 per cent sell-on clause. United are also thought to be considering a move for Morten Hjulmand, who starred under Amorim at Sporting CP. More Trending Recent reports have suggested they are willing to bid up to £50m for the Denmark captain who Amorim has previously described as a 'complete' midfielder. 'The big difference is that we have improved in our organised attack,' Amorim said following Sporting's title success last year. 'We had the principles of the first year, when defensively we were very good, but we didn't spend much time in organised attack,' Amorim said. 'We spent a lot of time creating offensive nuances and then we discovered what kind of players we need.' It's a normal evolution and then there's also the merit of scouting. I love Palhinha and Ugarte, but I would say that Hjulmand is the most complete player in his position. I'm certainly no longer their favourite coach, but it's a matter of everyone at the Academy understanding our playing philosophy.'
