GVMC to get 95 e-vehicles soon for garbage transportation: Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman
Mr. Pattabhi Ram inspected the bio-mining and also the waste-to-energy plant at Kapuluppada along with GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, here on Saturday. Later, addressing the media, Mr. Pattabhi Ram said that the State government is also in process of procuring compactors and they will be provided to the city based on the needs of GVMC.
He stated that the bio-mining operations at the Kapuluppada dumping yard are being efficiently carried out. 'As per the Swachh Andhra Corporation's decision, 2.01 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste are to be bio-mined across 5 acres by July 11. As of now, around 1.63 lakh metric tonnes, which is about 80 per cent have been processed so far,' he said.
He stated that the reclaimed land, once cleared of legacy waste, will be developed into a green space and further as a tourism spot by the GVMC as a pilot project.
He said that the ultimate goal of the State government, under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is to make Andhra Pradesh a 'dump-yard free' State. He said that the government's aim is to ensure waste generated on a daily basis is processed the same day. He also said that steps will be taken to generate the power capacity from the current 15 MW to 20 MW in the waste-to-energy plant. He noted that the 1,200 metric tonnes of waste generated daily in Visakhapatnam is being effectively converted to electricity.
Five awards
During the media interaction, Mr. Pattabhi Ram also announced that Andhra Pradesh has secured five national-level awards in the 'Swachh Survekshan 2024'. He said that GVMC received a special category ministerial award, while Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC) won a State-level ministerial award. He also stated that Vijayawada, Guntur, and Tirupati received Super Swachh league awards.
He said that A.P. is emerging as a model State for cleanliness through the Swachh Andhra movement. He highlighted that the State-wide 'Swarnandhra–Swachhandhra' initiatives are held on the third Saturday of every month, aligning with the vision of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg expressed delight over the awards received by Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry, emphasising that public participation will be the key to achieving top national ranks. He reaffirmed the commitment to developing Visakhapatnam as a clean and beautiful city.
He said that three phases of bio-mining at the Kapuluppada yard have been completed. Currently, door-to-door waste collection has reached 80 to 90 per cent coverage, and steps are being taken to achieve 10 per cent, GVMC Commissioner added.

Tirupati: Minister for Endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy announced that the district aims to increase its Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) from Rs 91,478 crore to Rs 1,69,633 crore, marking a targeted growth rate of 16.69 percent. In line with the Swarnandhra@2047 Vision Plan guidelines, comprehensive vision documents have been prepared for Tirupati district, including constituency-level and mandal-level plans. The Minister, who was the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Tirupati on Friday, hoisted the national flag and received a police guard of honour before addressing the gathering. On this occasion, Reddy highlighted the district's priorities for the future and key achievements over the past year. By implementing the district and mandal vision plans over the next five years, and through coordinated efforts across all departments, the Minister projected that the district's per capita income would rise to Rs 6,01,297 by 2028–29. Under the P4 initiative, 6,197 mentors have so far adopted 60,997 'golden families' out of 80,477 identified in the district. Emphasising the district's favourable environment for industrial investment, the Minister said that 131 mega and large-scale industries have already been established in Tirupati district with an investment of Rs 37,154 crore, generating employment for 75,791 people. In the current financial year alone, 5,886 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have commenced production with an investment of around Rs 191 crore, creating jobs for an additional 12,129 individuals. On tourism, he said the district holds vast potential for growth, with plans to develop temple circuit tourism, beach tourism, and resort facilities to encourage pilgrims to extend their stay by an extra day. Tableaus presented by various departments – including Industries & APIIC, Agriculture, Horticulture & APMIP, DRDA & MEPMA, Municipal Corporation, Tourism, Fire Services, NREDCAP, Education (DEO), and DWMA – attracted wide attention. The Tirupati Municipal Corporation's tableau won first prize, DRDA & MEPMA jointly secured second, and the Agriculture Department took third place. A special jury award was presented to a tableau on Swarna Naravaripalle, jointly exhibited by the District Panchayat Raj and APSPDCL. The Minister also visited departmental stalls showcasing development activities and presented merit certificates to outstanding government staff. Cultural performances at the event received enthusiastic applause from the audience. City MLA Arani Srinivasulu, MLC Balli Kalyana Chakravarthy, Yadava Corporation Chairman G Narasimha Yadav and other leaders were present.

Anna Canteens a lifeline for Vizag low-income workers
Visakhapatnam: Anna Canteens in Visakhapatnam have emerged as a major success since their relaunch in Sep last year. As of July 2025, nearly 65 lakh meals have been served across the 25 canteens in the city, where meals are offered at a nominal price of Rs 5. About 24,950 people dine at these canteens daily. Located near high-traffic areas and hospitals, the canteens have become a key support system for daily wage workers, low-income employees, and unemployed youth preparing for competitive exams in the city. They are also a boon for the floating population, especially those visiting Vizag for medical or other short-term purposes, who would otherwise spend about Rs 100 per meal even at modest restaurants. Launched by the previous TDP govt in 2018 as part of a state-wide welf are effort, the scheme was discontinued in 2019 by the YSRCP govt after it came to power in the state. As promised in its 2024 election manifesto, the TDP-led NDA govt revived the scheme soon after returning to power. In Visakhapatnam, 25 canteens reopened under the program, with Rs 3.3 crore allocated for their renovation. GVMC mayor P Srinivasa Rao said about 65 lakh meals have been served through these canteens in just nine months. "People have expressed satisfaction with the quality of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. An electronic token system is in place to manage meal distribution. Beneficiaries must present Aadhaar credentials for token issuance. In the absence of Aadhaar card, fingerprints or facial recognition data are collected for future records. Each canteen spans approximately 750 square feet and is designed to serve food to at least 350 people at a time. The canteens serve three idlis, chutney, and sambar as breakfast from 7:30 am to 10 am three days a week, and puri or pongal with kurma on the remaining days. Lunch is served from 12 pm to 3 pm, and dinner from 7:30 pm to 9 pm, which include rice, curry, dal, sambar, curd, and chutney. Special rice is served once a week. Vizag celebrates I-Day on a grand note
1 2 Visakhapatnam : Several educational institutions and government organisations celebrated the 79th Independence Day on a grand scale in Visakhapatnam on Friday. The celebrations were held at the GVMC office under the leadership of Visakhapatnam mayor P Srinivasa Rao, with the participation of deputy mayor Dalli Govindaraju, corporators, GVMC officials, staff, and GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg.
