Works minister defends JKR against criticism over deadly UPSI bus crash, calls for focus on service delivery
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry and JKR often face ongoing criticism.
He said such criticism tends to arise during incidents involving public infrastructure and the loss of lives, such as the recent fatal accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik, Perak last month.
'We mourn as well, but we are often blamed even when the causes vary depending on the situation... like in the bus accident in Gerik last month, some claimed that the bus overturned and the guardrail pierced through the body of the bus, causing the fatalities.
'... but in reality, the bus was speeding and overturned, landing on the guardrail. This is the actual fact that the public may not know or has been twisted to make it seem as though the guardrail itself was highly dangerous. While there may indeed be some danger in the current design, alternative designs have not yet been implemented. So we will review other design options later,' he said.
He said this after officiating the 2025 Senior Officers Conference (SOC) for JKR Malaysia here today.
Also present were Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, JKR Director-General Datuk Roslan Ismail, and Terengganu JKR director Ir Dr Hasli Ibrahim.
Nanta added that despite swift response and mitigation measures taken by JKR, certain issues and complaints, especially involving roads, continue to be sensationalised or used as 'ammunition' by netizens.
Therefore, he called on all JKR personnel to rise above the criticism and continue to prove their worth to the public by delivering services with full dedication and transparency in order to dispel all accusations.
Some 400 senior JKR officers from across the country, including top management, district engineers, and cadre officers, are attending the three-day SOC 2025 conference beginning today.
Themed 'JKR Mampan: Memacu Kelestarian Madani', the annual conference serves as a platform for critical thinking and unity among senior JKR officers aimed at improving service delivery in a sustainable and holistic manner. — Bernama

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH), said the move would help New Zealand tap into ASEAN's halal market, with Malaysia acting as a strategic base. 'While in Wellington, I took the opportunity to push for deeper halal collaboration between Malaysia and New Zealand. My focus was on promoting ASEAN halal products into the Asia-Pacific. 'Currently, two organisations in New Zealand have already received halal certification recognition from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for exports to Malaysia. 'I've now opened the door for them to use Malaysia as a hub for distributing New Zealand's halal products to ASEAN. I've also suggested they take part in MIHAS,' he said during a press conference after the Malaysia–New Zealand Halal Forum. Also present were New Zealand's Minister for Biosecurity and Food Safety, Andrew Hoggard, and Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki. Ahmad Zahid added that Malaysia would use the MIHAS platform to announce the formation of the ASEAN Halal Council, comprising all Southeast Asian nations. He said halal certifying bodies endorsed by Jakim would also be invited to join the ASEAN Halal Plus Council to harmonise regional halal standards. During the forum, Ahmad Zahid witnessed the exchange of letters of intent between Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and the University of Canterbury (UC), aimed at strengthening cooperation in chemical and process engineering, halal food technology, and sustainable development. Ahmad Zahid also dismissed concerns that Jakim's stringent halal procedures would be an obstacle for New Zealand businesses. He explained that Jakim had already authorised two local halal bodies in New Zealand to handle certification, removing the need for companies to go through Jakim directly. 'Jakim will continue periodic audits to ensure compliance with the standards. But I see no issues — I had discussions this morning with the two associations already certified by Jakim and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS),' he said. New Zealand's halal exports to Malaysia surpassed NZ$60 million (RM151 million) last year, driven largely by premium halal meat products.

Selangor Sultan: Judicial appointments must follow the law
SHAH ALAM, July 17 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has emphasised that the appointment of senior judges to the superior courts must comply with all legal provisions, particularly under Article 122B of the Federal Constitution. This was among the matters Sultan Sharafuddin emphasised while chairing the 269th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers yesterday. The meeting had discussed, among other things, appointments for the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other judges of the superior courts. In this regard, Sultan Sharafuddin fully supports the statement issued by Istana Negara on July 10 regarding the power of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal and other key positions in the judiciary, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers. 'The process provided for under the Federal Constitution must be carried out transparently and carefully, in order to uphold the rule of law and support the principles of justice that form the core of governance in this country. 'In this connection, all parties are urged to refrain from making any speculation or unfounded accusations without complete and verified facts,' His Royal Highness said in a statement today. National security, judicial appointments discussed at rulers' conference

PETALING JAYA : Issues concerning national security, judicial appointments, and the ban on vaping were among the key topics discussed at the 269th Conference of Rulers meeting held at Istana Negara today. Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the meeting was presided over by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. 'Today, the conference received the latest briefings on national security from Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail, and on national defence from armed forces chief Nizam Jaffar,' Bernama reported him as saying. Syed Danial said the meeting deliberated on judicial appointments to the Federal Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Court, as well as the appointments of the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, the Court of Appeal president, and the chief justice. 'The conference took note of the proposal to impose a complete ban on the sale and use of vape or electronic cigarettes in the country. 'Also tabled at the meeting were legal opinions from the 126th and 127th meetings of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs' muzakarah committee, along with resolutions from the 2025 special meeting of the committee,' he said. Syed Danial said the conference was briefed on the need for registration of marriages involving refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia, as well as a Cabinet paper regarding a centralised policy on the management of seized and forfeited assets.
